I always get a kick out of neophytes saying things like "I know how that is done!", as if that is all there is to doing magic. Knowing a secret and performing it properly to the delight of an audience are 2 different things!
Many audiences are no longer amazed by finger lights because of raves and they don't really think of them as magic any more. I feel that Jeff is showing us how to truly use finger lights.

@Pinkstonnaked Well you have to buy the right cane, install lights, etc. It would be best to just buy one. And dude wtf i don't know about the vanishing bird trick, I don't see whyd you ask me that.

Let me clear something up here. I never said anything about Jeff, as a person. I'm sure he is generous. I'm sure he's nice. I'm sure he's friendly. I love his card-throwing skills, and share his love and enthusiasm for japanese culture.
He just doesn't impress me one bit, as a magician.
He seems a little bit like Micheal Flatley, but that's probably just me seeing too much stage presence with not enough results. In which case, it's totally understandable.
well for a guy that sucks at magic and his tricks are only for little kids then I guess your the only smart magician in the world cause he just won Lecture of the Year by the Magic Castle.
moar liek "anyone can see through this man's best performances" amirite?
Honestly, it really is more along the lines of anyone who's fooled by McBride's tricks is a moron. I've not met a single person, live, that has been impressed with him. They might have been momentarily wowed by his outfit, or the build-up to a trick, but in the end, they've always had a "that's it?" look.
Tell you what, watch the 2009 Masks (Masters of Illusion) video listed to the right. At 2 minutes and 34 seconds, it cuts to the crowd. Out of everyone there, only two people look impressed. The rest look like they're clapping out of habit, pity, or the fact that it's over.
If that's McBride working a crowd, I think I'll keep my money.
McBride's Mask Routine is not famous because of the effect a spectator feels during a routine. This routine is recognized because of the originality, the beaty, and the artistic way McBride performs it.
His dancing canes are obviously suspended by a wire, connected to each other via a pulley above his head, so when he spins one, to get it to move up and down, he simply moves the other one in the opposite direction. To get it to move in circles, he just pushes the wire with his hand, between his thumb and forefinger.
And making a "breath-taking" show with rather amateurish use of a d'lite is also pretty sad.
Honestly, he kinda reminds me of the guy from Montgomery Gentry with the huge black hat that does nothing but spin the microphone stand like it's something special. It's like he's the retarded little brother that everyone else has to put up with and humor.
Sorry, Jeff, but a novice magician like myself should NEVER be able to fully explain your tricks after watching them only once. You just are not that good.
Um... I think I did note that I'm a NOVICE magician. I know I have further to go on my acts. HOWEVER, that someone as unskilled as I am could see through this "master's" illusions means that he's about on the same level as myself. If I had the same props as McBride did in this act, I could probably an equal job with just a bit of practice.
I didn't say "I know how that's done." I'm saying that he needs to make it cleaner and less obvious because it's easy for ANYONE to see how it's done.
So far, you've said I'm either incredibly inferior to Jeff McBride, or not a magician at all. So now, according to you, your beloved McBride has illusions that inferior magicians and non-magicians can see through. Is that how you define a "master"?
Just as an aside, why do you disagree with my statements? Were you actually impressed by this video? Could you NOT figure out how it was done immediately?
I guess I'm asking why you think he's so good. (Totally not meant to be a barb or a jab at you. I'm honestly curious.)
Yes, and how the routine is put together, how well it's performed, and how good his showmanship really is is exactly what disguises how the the trick is done. If any or all of those three things are found lacking, then the magician fails. Lance Burton is incredible. Chris Angel is incredible (and a little weird). But I happen to find Jeff McBride as impressive as The Amazing Jonathan, only not as funny.
I will say that the canes themselves are pretty, but Jeff can't dance very well.
Actually, I was thinking more of making his motorcycle disappear from the top of a parking garage and replacing it with three women, or pulling a he'd swallowed out through his neck with a guitar wire in front of one of the guys from ZZ Top.
But, if you're griping about wires, perhaps you shouldn't do it on Jeff McBride's dancing canes video.
You know, a better defense of McBride would be that I know more about magic than I thought.
Because someone who knows as little as you say I do being able to figure out his stuff without trying is actually more insulting than anything I could have said. But, if it makes you feel better to tear me down because I can see through his stuff, and THAT'S what magicians do, then by all means, continue.
So... you don't like props, but dancing canes are fine? What about d'lites, light-up masks and fans? How about 5 masks on top of each other that you plop into a top hat by bouncing your head down towards it? Oh yes, very skillful indeed.
But, Angel has showman ship, and stage presence, and a certain gothy charisma that appeals to a crowd. His tricks may not be his own, but they're harder to see through, and THAT is the magic.
p.s. Do you make your own playing cards, or buy pre-made ones?
No, the canes don't work by themselves, but the d'lite does, so does his goofy mask and fans (which he holds in plain sight and then acts surprised when it "appears" grabs it at 1:38 and is holding it in his hand at 1:40).
And actually, I am pretty decent at card manipulations, doing some better than my teacher and learning some faster. I also do coin manipulations, though I'm not as proficient. I am also a mime and a dancer, and incorporate that into my clown/magic acts.
Even non-magicians can see his steals, as he doesn't try to hide them. And if his mask routine is a skilled magic trick, but is 90% mime, then it's only 10% magic, and is hardly a magic trick, but rather a poorly done mime act.
And I'm not one of those magicians who records himself and posts on youtube so others can stroke my e-peen for me. I perform, in person, with people around me so there are no "off-camera" movements, and details can be seen more readily.
Incidentally, are you the same "Justin_Magician" that got banned from clown-forum and moderates (or used to) learnmagictricks? I know "Justin" is a common name, and I'm sure there are many magicians named "Justin", but I'm curious as your name is so close to the other one.
Also, when I pointed out McBride's steals, and you said "well duh a MAGICIAN can see his steals," is that you acknowledging that I'm a magician, after saying I'm not one?
If screaming fans and TV shows is an indication of talent, then Angel is on the same level with McBride. "Mindfreak" made Angel a household name, and Jeff was a guest on that show. I didn't think you were on the clown-forum, the chances were just too slim, but curiosity compelled me to ask. No worries.
I'm not a huge fan of Angel, other than the street magic bits that he does. He's kinda like David Blaine, but with a better image. Honestly, my favorite magicians are Lance Burton and Blackstone.
Funny you should mention that, if you watch the first McBride video on the right menu (the 2009 Masters of Illusion Masks), at the end of it, it's like a karaoke crowd clapping. No enthusiam, they're just being polite.
I just know that everyone I've met and talked to, in person, is completely unimpressed with McBride, and many of them are magicians, while quite a few are not.
And again, if Angel were so bad, people wouldn't be screaming and cheering at his performances, but they do. So it's like I said, if you're going by money made and screaming audiences and TV shows, Angel is doing as well as (if not better) than McBride.
So Angel pays every single person in Las Vegas that he walks past? And performing a feat that should be impossible without any visible means is not magic? Funny, that seems exactly what the dancing canes are.
And I seem to recall everything Angel performed was performed in public. Maybe a few people were plants, but he can't afford hundreds. McBride, however, has been making millions since his 20's. He might be able to afford it.
And, like *I* said, I do not make youtube videos of me working so others can stroke my e-peen for me. I perform live, and everyone I've performed for has very much enjoyed the show.
If you would like to visit my area and see me work, you are more than welcome.
And having videos or not having videos does not have any bearing on whether or not I can criticize McBride's lack of skills. The two are not related.
Sorry, but you have failed to produce anything but a losing argument time after time.
Split fans... as in "here, hold this while I pull another one out of my jacket"? Those split fans?
And you're not even making sense anymore. "Only true magicians can point out who's the master"? How about "Only true magicians can see through the master". If I'm so dumb, I shouldn't be able to see through a master's illusions, should I? And bouncing cards off a floor isn't magic, it's card-flicking. And I've said before, that's the only thing McBride does well (And the only thing I like).
Additionally, me being good or bad at anything has no bearing on whether McBride is good or bad at anything. I can suck and say that he sucks as well.
Honestly, you've said absolutely nothing that counters anything I've said, and everything you've said I have shown to be false.
Sorry, but you lose. Have a nice day, I'm finished playing with you.
Again, your argument fails. Not knowing the name of ONE trick does not determine whether I'm a magician or not. And as for floating above a crowd, I guess David Copperfield isn't a magician either, then. You fail so hard, it's hilarious. McBride may be better than Angel, but that doesn't mean that McBride doesn't suck.
And this whole deal is not about me, but about McBride.
Whatever you say, dude. All I did was state that Jeff McBride really isn't the "great one" everyone says he is. For some reason, you made this personal and about me, which really just adds credence to my statement because instead of defending him, you instead attacked me.
As yet, everything I've said has yet to be proven wrong, and you've done nothing but try to cast negative remarks at me (and you know absolutely NOTHING about me).
In the end, the only thing you've accomplished is looking bad
Dude, you need to see McBride live and working a crowd before you can say shit like that. I've seen Copperfield, Burton, Angel, Penn & Teller, Siegfried & Roy, Amazing Jonathan, and Mac King all live and none of them brought the house down like McBride. Oddly enough the best trick was a rather simplistic one. His water bowl effect, I actually heard gasps when he did that one. That guy can spin anything to gold in front of a crowd and his ability to slay a crowd is what makes him one of the best.
And another thought. Mcbride is also the most generous teacher when it comes to magic. He actually contributes to young magicians with his DVD series and school. You actually learn about performance and history of magic unlike the current trend ala Dan Garcia and Wayne Houchin who are only interested in inventing tricks to sell on over-priced single trick DVDs with the sole intention of making money off of young magicians. Tricks have died in less than a year due to their overpopularity.
So McBride peddles unpopular tricks, and sells DVDs with info you can get for free on wikipedia about the history of magic.
Yes, simple tricks can be some of the best ones. But if it's hard, make it look easy. If it's easy, make it look impossible.
McBride's D'lite performance is pathetic. Him rolling around on stage is rather mediocre, and the most impressed person in the room always seems to be him. Perhaps that's just his "I can't believe they bought it" face.
Unpopular??? His Art of Card Manipulation series is the best-selling magic video series of all time and he did it all without an overblown viral marketing campaign that doesn't even show the full performance of one trick. Magic ain't always about fooling people it's about entertainment value and when I saw him do this live he killed and at the end of the show got a well-deserved standing ovation. As for the popular ones I've never needed to purchace a Garcia DVD since their easy to figure out.
I'm sorry, but when you talked about other people being so popular that their tricks were proliferated into destruction, logic would then dictate that, while selling greatly, McBride's tricks were not as popular (i.e. Yeah, they bought them, but they weren't being used).
Maybe I'm wrong about that, but that seems like what you're saying.
And magic is about entertaining through illusion. Otherwise you're The Amazing Jonathan, and no one should be that.
However, I did download McBride's card manipulation DVDs, at Justin's suggestion, and I will be studying them. IF McBride manages to knock my socks off, I'll give him some money. But as yet, I've seen him work on TV, and he fails. He may be able to work a live audience, but he should stay off camera until he teaches them (or learns himself) about angles.
what was great about his stuff was that there was such a wealth of info on them so that each magician who got them could pick and choose what they would perform. It's good to know alot of material but work with what fits your style or modify it to fit. That way no one effect gets over-exposed and all this great material remains strong. You may not use it now but you may in the future. The problem with one-trick DVDs is that it's only one trick, ergo that one trick gets beaten into overexposure.
MagicofAlexo dont worry about schatten over here. cause hes "soooooo much better" than Jeff. Jeff sucks but yet he was making $5,000 a week at 16. and he was in Vegas(doing the mask act, dancing canes, mime etc) at 28. so the tricks must be fooling someone if he can get a Vegas gig out of it and make Millions off one "kid tricks" lol
Justin, my boy, show me ONE instance where I ever once said I was better than he was. Please, I'm begging you.
Also, since you say Angel sucks so bad, he's got regular performances in Vegas AND a regular TV series. So your standards of measuring greatness have a few holes in them.
The ONLY reason why Angel as a TV show is one reason MONEY I too could have a TV show if I was rich. you go to Criss' new show in Vegas you see NOTHING like the stuff on Mindfreak simple reason he cant do stuff on Mindfreak to real people. only tv lan thats why angel has a TV show. money money money money. Jeff's magic can be done ANYWHERE.
seen this performance last week at blackpool magic convention and at the end he threw that string of light at eugene burger where it appeared around his white beard. all i can say is WOW.
They should have turned the lights down more, in his live shows this is done practicaly in the dark. It looks better that way, but all in all Jeff's one of the best ever!

Now, if only he were actually a decent magician.

Schattenbolt 2 years ago
er, probably DO and equal job... That's the ticket. (curse the lack of an edit button)

Schattenbolt 2 years ago

Schattenbolt 2 years ago

Schattenbolt 2 years ago
Incidentally, are you the same "Justin_Magician" that got banned from clown-forum and moderates (or used to) learnmagictricks? I know "Justin" is a common name, and I'm sure there are many magicians named "Justin", but I'm curious as your name is so close to the other one.
Also, when I pointed out McBride's steals, and you said "well duh a MAGICIAN can see his steals," is that you acknowledging that I'm a magician, after saying I'm not one?
Can't have it both ways, my friend. ^.^

Schattenbolt 2 years ago

Schattenbolt 2 years ago

Schattenbolt 2 years ago

So again, you fail. Have a nice day.

Schattenbolt 2 years ago
Dude, you need to see McBride live and working a crowd before you can say shit like that. I've seen Copperfield, Burton, Angel, Penn & Teller, Siegfried & Roy, Amazing Jonathan, and Mac King all live and none of them brought the house down like McBride. Oddly enough the best trick was a rather simplistic one. His water bowl effect, I actually heard gasps when he did that one. That guy can spin anything to gold in front of a crowd and his ability to slay a crowd is what makes him one of the best.
MagicofAlexo 2 years ago
And another thought. Mcbride is also the most generous teacher when it comes to magic. He actually contributes to young magicians with his DVD series and school. You actually learn about performance and history of magic unlike the current trend ala Dan Garcia and Wayne Houchin who are only interested in inventing tricks to sell on over-priced single trick DVDs with the sole intention of making money off of young magicians. Tricks have died in less than a year due to their overpopularity.
MagicofAlexo 2 years ago
So McBride peddles unpopular tricks, and sells DVDs with info you can get for free on wikipedia about the history of magic.
Yes, simple tricks can be some of the best ones. But if it's hard, make it look easy. If it's easy, make it look impossible.
McBride's D'lite performance is pathetic. Him rolling around on stage is rather mediocre, and the most impressed person in the room always seems to be him. Perhaps that's just his "I can't believe they bought it" face.
Schattenbolt 2 years ago
Unpopular??? His Art of Card Manipulation series is the best-selling magic video series of all time and he did it all without an overblown viral marketing campaign that doesn't even show the full performance of one trick. Magic ain't always about fooling people it's about entertainment value and when I saw him do this live he killed and at the end of the show got a well-deserved standing ovation. As for the popular ones I've never needed to purchace a Garcia DVD since their easy to figure out.
MagicofAlexo 2 years ago
I'm sorry, but when you talked about other people being so popular that their tricks were proliferated into destruction, logic would then dictate that, while selling greatly, McBride's tricks were not as popular (i.e. Yeah, they bought them, but they weren't being used).
Maybe I'm wrong about that, but that seems like what you're saying.
And magic is about entertaining through illusion. Otherwise you're The Amazing Jonathan, and no one should be that.
Schattenbolt 2 years ago
However, I did download McBride's card manipulation DVDs, at Justin's suggestion, and I will be studying them. IF McBride manages to knock my socks off, I'll give him some money. But as yet, I've seen him work on TV, and he fails. He may be able to work a live audience, but he should stay off camera until he teaches them (or learns himself) about angles.
Schattenbolt 2 years ago
what was great about his stuff was that there was such a wealth of info on them so that each magician who got them could pick and choose what they would perform.
MagicofAlexo 2 years ago
MagicofAlexo dont worry about schatten over here. cause hes "soooooo much better" than Jeff. Jeff sucks but yet he was making $5,000 a week at 16. and he was in Vegas(doing the mask act, dancing canes, mime etc) at 28. so the tricks must be fooling someone if he can get a Vegas gig out of it and make Millions off one "kid tricks" lol
JustinTheMagician12 2 years ago
Justin, my boy, show me ONE instance where I ever once said I was better than he was. Please, I'm begging you.
Also, since you say Angel sucks so bad, he's got regular performances in Vegas AND a regular TV series. So your standards of measuring greatness have a few holes in them.
Schattenbolt 2 years ago
