I can hear the special double bass sound ..I love this instrument and this is so unordinary to see four double basses playing at the same time ...almost like violins or chellos ...I love it !And I totally agree with the last commentator..that double bass is not a decoration ...double bass is a fenomen !
i've seen a band on tv recently. consists of a rhythm guitarist, double bass and a lead guitarist.3 members. i don't know what year was that show. well the lead guitarist was silver haired, old. and the double bass player had mustache and wore glasses.
@maimaiHardcore It really is! Out of all the instruments I've tried the upright bass just took the prize as my favorite. It is so awkward and natually seems so limited that when you can do something unique it's such a high xD
If you guys like the upright bass check out jazz musician Esperanza Spalding. She talks about her new album, Chamber Music Society in this video, Youtube.com/watch?v=uk-oJGAXSjA
He's the one doing what's traditionally the bassline isn't he? Doesn't look like the most efficient way of playing it. I'm prolly confused; been ages since I played acoustic.
Wonderful! I like the doublebass a lot, I think it's a cool instrument, which unfortunately is on a background most of the time. It's great that there are guys who bring it to the spotlight!
Well this is clearly a very innovative composition, probably created by the players them selves, so i'm guessing theres a cadenza (non-measured time for a single soloist) dedicated to him. He's also the rhythm throughout the song, so they're thanking him I think too! :)
I just started playing the double bass for band. The band was asked to find musicians for their section. I thought that I was so dead as I did not know any musicians who played double bass. But there is! These musicians are really talented!
to learn to play bass will take some time and alot of power in your hands and fingers because it is hard to press down on a bass and you get very sore on long songs i suggest you learn how to play piano first before learning the bass so you know how to read bass cleff
yeah some great points, its all about building up strength with your fingers far and for most. youll see in the beginning how exhausting it is and how sore your whole left arm is going to be. but make no mistake this is by far the best stringed instrument, no instrument can produce such a beautiful tone. and also i think it would be easier to learn how to play electric upright or even guitar so you can get familiar with the notes on the neck.
Why bother learning something else to learn bass? The whole point of practicing is to become more familiar and learn. jeez.. Otherwise its a waste of time practicing on an instrument you dont want to learn. Same thing with mamoleo's comment about basscleff.
For me, it was easy. But I started in 4th grade. The first week/month is going to be painful for some because of calluses and blisters. After that it's good. I don't recommend what the other guy said about learning piano. It's just stupid. Learn bass and learn bass clef while learning bass.
About learning to play the upright bass. I play myself the electric bass for years and I want to move to upright bass but I have no experience on instruments such a violin. Can I make it with hard work?
You most likely played a fretted electric bass so you'll have intonation problems at the beginning. I have never played electric bass before but I believe is 1-2-4 fingerings. So it shouldn't be hard. The only thing hard is thumb position when you play closer to the bridge (kind of like a pickup for electric bass). You should definitely have intonation problems there.
I played electric bass for 8 years and within the last year a double bass fell into my hands. It has become a new love. I auditioned to study double bass at university and i got in. With the right kind of hard work anything is possible.
Welcome to the Brave New World of bass playing; I'm playing with Edgar Meyer this week - think I'll ask him how he feels about the whole bass ensemblel thing as a composer/bassist.

That shit sucks imo. Cool, but i guess i dont like the sound of a bass playing a lead line cause we trumpet players are very coincided and like to keep everybody down below Oh well
I noticed the length of this video, and I assumed I would watch half of it or somethin. Didn't work out that way. I was enticed by their skill. I play the double bass and I wish I could play like that. =/
