Great tips...especially the one about getting an unlocked phone. Although I would add getting a prepaid cell phone instead of using your regular cell phone. With TracFone, you only pay for the minutes that you use and you save so much money. You don't have to pay for activation, overage, or cancellation fees. It's conveninet and easy to use.

if you leave North America you can buy a NEW or USED unlocked mobile (cell) for under 20 euro....basic but working. You can also buy NEW or USED SIM CARDS....which allow you to call anywhere in the world or sms...and depending on your mobile (CELL) use the net....the SIM will cost you about 10 euro...new or used.

You only need a photo copy of your passport....nothing else.....!!!!!!!!!!!!

The rest of the world is more advance than N.America. Sorry USA you have fallen wayyyy behind.

Another way to save on cell phone costs when traveling is to invest in a phone with Wi-Fi capabilities. There's Wi-Fi hotspots all over the place (many of which are free). With a Wi-Fi enabled phone you can check your e-mail, view maps, surf the net, etc... without having to pay cell data charges. Also, some Wi-Fi phones have an option to make internet (ie, Skype) phone calls ... using this feature can save a ton of money.

An unlocked cell phone and a local SIM card will save you a lot of money on voice calls. When I travel, however, I generally text message using my home (Canada) SIM card (ie, as the price per message is fairly reasonable).

If you are buying an unlocked phone for travel make sure it operates on the cell frequencies used in the countries you are visiting. A quad band phone is generally your best bet as these can be used almost everywhere.
