  • forget everything do the following:

    sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates

    sudo apt-get update

    sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

  • @wormholica Sure, because nothing fixes an Intel or ATI video problem like x-swat NVIDIA drivers! LMAO, not. Sorry man, but this is half the answer to a four year old video.

  • @ctsdownloads

thanks for the reply... by the way I din't check the age of this video...!! The tragedy happened to my life just yesterday... so the issue was new to me... and I know little about linux...I googled the whole night... and tried all the methods found randomly here and there... this particular method worked for me after the long and tragic struggle... the machine was my lab-machine where all my instruments were connected and my project is going on.. I thought I am screwed...

  • @ctsdownloads

reply part 2: I tried the method of this video too... :-( no result... tried to update by CD... but the problem is my system is Ubuntu 12.04... CD was an older version... !!! finally.. from some where I got the above method and it worked... so I was excited to share this with the screwed/going to be screwed friends :-) .... I din't find the page so I could not refer the page from where I had got this method....

  • @ctsdownloads

reply part 3: I can conclude that there are random reasons behind all these disasters.. may not be random but for a new user finding out the cause is near impossible... so one , like me, should keep on trying all the methods (provided any of those cause potential damage to the system :-) )....

    bye bye.,,,,

  • @wormholica 12.04, eh? You're braver than me. I never upgrade when a new release is out. Never goes well. At least not on a PC I use daily, that is. Running Linux Mint 11 on my desktop, 12 on my netbook and an old LTS edition on my other laptop. Not sure what the machine specs are, but there may be a catch with them. I use Mint since they rate their updates based on how safe each are. They mark their Ubuntu updates as dangerous sometimes.

    reply-I:

ok, le'me tell u the truth... actually my ssh was not working... I tried to edit the know hosts and all din't work... and then I messed up things.Open software center removed ssh and along with that I removed graphics and xserver.. and what else I don't remember... suddenly aflet that the computer automatically rebooted and never started well again, tried the recovery mode.din't work.

  • @ctsdownloads

    reply no-II:

did alt+ctrl+f1,tried to reinstall the things but as I had forgotten, what exactly I removed so couldn't install all... and whole night I struggled finally it showed up in "startx" and I though may be upgrading from 10.04 to 11.04 may work... so did "update-manager -d"... got the new upgrade 12.04, started the process, everything went fine..finally the final step "restart the computer" came up..I did it.. and then after reboot stuck in the black screen

  • @ctsdownloads

    reply no-III:

the interesting thing is that "ssh -X" was working so good, I could access it from my laptop..even I had opened software center, and tried all the methods discussed in whatever forum... next you know the story.

  • ubuntu black screen of death !!!! this sucks alot and a really deal breaker

  • @TheDuck1234 *Four* years ago, when this video was relevant, okay. Today, it's really not an issue. Besides, it's not like Windows is free of shades of "Blue" in Win 7. ;)

  • @ctsdownloads if it is really not a issue why does it show black screen when newly install ? I try the version under that there is now and now i cant connect to any from of internet xD Ubuntu just looks broken for me.

  • @TheDuck1234 No, I totally understand. That's because if you look really closely at your PC, the sticker on it says exactly why this is happening. "Designed for/Made for Windows Operating system".

Now to be fair, I blame the distro creators for misleading people here. if you buy a PC, pre-installed like most did with Windows, it's a success....

  • @TheDuck1234 (cont).....In your case, it sounds like you're having problems with Internet connectivity. I have no idea if this is wireless, wired or what, but I assume wireless.

I am very, very doubtful that a wired connection is failing. Honestly, this just never happens. If it did, you need a better Ethernet card to be honest.....

  • @TheDuck1234 (even more cont.) .......Kidding aside, I have TONS of legacy peripherals that all fail with Win 7. Canon scanner, bluetooth dongle, wireless adapter, the list keeps going. Worse, because it's 64bit Windows, there are no drivers for these devices.

Buy made for Linux hardware. System76, ZaReason, etc. Otherwise, you're choosing to install on a Made for Windows box. And yes, with compatible devices, wireless works very well. Hope this clears the mystery a little better. Good luck.

  • @ctsdownloads Thanks alot ! I guess my PC is just too much of a "made for windows" kind to work, so I will give it a pass for now. I could not for the love of god get ether wireless or wired to work on Ubuntu and i tryed a ton of "how to make it work" guide before giving up.

  • @TheDuck1234 Sorry if I made this seem worse than I meant it. Most PCs are in fact, built with Windows drivers in mind. It's a fact of life. The good news is that most can get things to work.

You bet it can be frustrating. But don't give up, instead, give me *specifics* as to what is creating errors for you? Device type/model/details. Visit my website's contact page so I can help you without this YT character limit. YT drives me nuts. If you'd rather pass, that's okay too. No worries

  • so the solution is to remove the kernal?some solution. i just downgraded the effecs in appearance and it got rid of it. each to his own.

  • @koglowa Well this video is VERY old. That said, yes, if a kernel is buggy, why the hell would one use it? Logically, it might be worthwhile to use one below it and wait for another more stable release to present itself. It's less of an issue these days. :)

  • It didn't work for my my screen is just dark please help

  • @exra82 You couldn't be more vague. It's like emailing to the mechanic and saying your car won't start, now give me some advice. Might need specifics on how it came to be, last thing it was doing, car type, etc.

  • Interesting fact - the moment I loaded this video, my Windows computer got the first BSOD in 2-3 years.. I don't think it likes me watching Linux :/

  • @JumpInFlames LOL, classic. Just to warn you - this video is three years old. So what is shown, might be slightly different these days.

  • worked perfectly ! Thanks !

  • i am stuck in the GNU GRUB sh:GRUB>

prompt thingy....yeah.....and i dont know what command to give to get back to ubuntu and access my desktop.......ubuntu said that i have to update some security update thing and i said yes of course so it asked me to restart and i did of course but when i tried to get back to ubuntu desktop it went to the grub beta......well i have to log out of windows to find the exact name...but it kept asking me to put in commands......PLZ HELP PLEASE!

  • This doesn't work when going from Hardy Heron to Jaunty Jackalope, because of the change from KDE4 to KDE3 :(

  • Hey, nice tutorial. But do you have one for when this blank screen happens after a fresh install? I had this blank screen problem using the live cd on my laptop, but the safe graphics mode enabled me to install ubuntu. After installation, however, I'm stuck with the blank screen and only one kernel version (generic and recovery) :(.

  • I have the exact same proplem as

    LogicInc25

  • Should have a video out in the next day or so talking about your options, whether it is just a weird notebook video card issue (common) or if it is just something else entirely.

  • This saved my laptop thanks so freaking much this should be the top hit on google for that search (it works for all versions of ubuntu, e.g kubuntu, xubuntu)

  • Happy to help. :)

  • My boot list was getting too long, so I deleted all entries for the old kernels.

I only have the option to load the current kernel, which strangly stopped working after a few months of ignoring it for XP.

Any suggestions on how to go about a restore without having to do a fresh install from live CD?

  • Nice. This is good to know for future reference. Currently I've just switched from 7.10 which was very stable to 8.04 which is not. FF3 constantly crashes my whole computer, which is odd for Linux (can't even run a "killall" command, the whole thing just dies).

  • All you taught is using the old kernel, that's not fixing a problem, you are just avoiding the problem. So what will you do, don't update kernels forever from now on?

  • No, it allows the user to buy themselves some time in order to see if this is a bug, or just an opportunity to learn how to over come it. It's about being able to try a new kernel, without allowing any issues had to frustrate the newbies out there.
