  • There will never be another like Shawn Lane.

  • Whenever I have 30 seconds I come here

  • Kid of reminds me of Badi Assad

  • O-K... "Giant Steps" chords... what's the big deal?

  • @gabrieloliveiramusic read megalodon73's comment.

  • @ChaosTitties i did.

Don't get me wrong... SHAWN LANE IS AWESOME! but people worshiping some jazz chords like: "OMG! MAJ7 CHORDS! WOW! II-V-I :OO"... kinda fanatic :)

  • @gabrieloliveiramusic I kind of agree with you on that, I'd be curious to hear what he would have improvised over the chords progressions tho.

  • @str4to [2]

  • Once you master blues, then rock, then jazz guitar, you can try taking a shot on Shawn's playing. Keyword: try.

  • Love this clip - the lighting, chords, facial expression at the end; it's like a living, breathing canvas.

  • I love when Shawn sang like this.

  • It would be great to see more videos of Shawn playing an acoustic.

  • R.I.P. Shawn Lane!

  • I'm trying to work out an economical way through these changes, and SL's arrangement here is right on the money, really nice voice leading too. By any chance has anyone transcribed (tabbed) this? If not, I will. Thumbs up if anyone would be interested when finished.

  • @kleinball Yes, please! I've always wanted to know how to navigate thru this tune like this!

  • @kleinball I'd very much like a transcription

  • @kleinball so ... Have you finnished with your tab ? : )

  • THE BEST GUITAR PLAYER IN THE GALAXY..!!!

  • i wonder if theres an improv of his over those changes... such a radical sounding harmony

  • @Residentevilgal

I don't know if Shawn improvised over it, but it's a well known jazz standard, John Coltrane wrote it.

  • Be Happy,

Shawn never sold out to the Sharks, I am sure he had many chances to do so

  • I met this guy, I quit my job to see him and Jonas and Sipe. Sat in the front row, shook his hand I told him thanks, then he tells me thanks. AN unbelievable person and even better guitar player. How can someone that good be so humble, how can someone be that good and virtually go unknown in this culture of music in America. It's scary, this country wants the next American Idol. Randy Johnson ought to know where to look heck he played fusion with Cobham and Ponty Etc. Shawn Lane was the one!

  • @triofdoom randy johnson the 5 time cy young award winner? lol

  • @thejohnofsteel LOL ops Randy Jackson, funny

  • SHAWN

  • I saw Shawn play live a little more than a year before his death. It was mind boggling to watch and hear him play. But he wasn't a draw dropping player for the sake of being a jaw dropping player. That was just his natural inner voice that came out through the gutiar.

  • First I want to say that I love, love, LOVE, Shawn Lane. But I just wanted to point out the fact that if this was some other guy playing this exact version of Giant Steps, people would be slamming him like there was no tomorrow. People would be saying things like, "Oh, he's just playing boring stock chord voicings," or "This guy needs singing lessons." But this video is just Shawn having a good time. The lesson here is to be kind to your fellow YouTubers, for we are all having a good time here.

  • he appears to substitute at the last C#-7 / F#7

can someone tell what he uses?

  • Love that smile on his face at the end :)

  • this is just great!!!

  • AND I never said you have to like him!!! This again proves your inability to comprehend. I just said YOU SHOULDN'T COME HERE TO TALK SHIT ABOUT SHAWN!!! tell me how you spell "excel" again moron...

  • This is Coltrane piece

    look /watch?v=2kotK9FNEYU .. jazz god

  • mozart is important to classical music. shawn lane is important to guitar playing. and who said one thing is more important than other in arts? both are genius in their own areas. this dumb absolutism im comparing who is better or who achieved more is retarded. first you have to prove that theres is free will if you are going to praise someone's "free effort". if you want to scientifize everything

  • @includao mozarts music influenced so many different styles and genres of music and composition... as did john coltrane and miles davis... where has shawn lanes music taken us?

  • @SpeakNoEvil123

"where has Shawn Lanes music taken us?" Wow hehe...

You just lack info... Shawn is Emulated and often Immitated

by Many of todays best virtuosos!!! Govan, Cooley, Gilbert, Romeo, MAB, Petrucci, G Howe, Masi, Buckethead, Timmons, M Polak, Loomis and many more have expressed their admiration for this GENIUS!!! Ask thirty of the 30 best guitarists on earth where Shawns genius music has gotten "US"!!! BTW, I see you like rap. Peace

  • Seriously, how does one person grow so idiotic to become a fanboy? I'm interested in the process, really. There must be some psychological background I'm unaware of, like double-digit IQ, lack of education or something along those lines...

Yeah, gimme the thumbs down kids! I'm ready!

  • I don't know why you have so many thumbs down, that was a valid point!

  • Idk because I can't remember what it was, but I'm sure it's due to the dillusions of most lane fans on these boards. Like he's good, but come on.

  • why did shawn have to go

  • Best ones always do

  • @Captainfalconargenis ehh..lack of breath?

  • @Captainfalconargenis well the story behind it was a angel was sent to earth by accident an then god realized that the world was not yet ready for his amazing powers

  • @Captainfalconargenis

He had to go so he could complete his job as playing for the angels.

  • @shadowknight132 Nah man, as I recall God wanted some guitar lessons...

  • @Captainfalconargenis God needed a muse

  • @jem7vwhgod Nailed it!!

  • @Captainfalconargenis because God needed him for private concerts.

  • because the good people died young.GOD bless you man.

  • @Captainfalconargenis he was to awsome for even himself

  • @Captainfalconargenis because god wanted guitar lessons.

  • @Captainfalconargenis I know I'm taking this quote from someone else but, the brightest candles always burn out the fastest.

  • @Captainfalconargenis He didn't go - he's playing to me right here.

  • can you come up with a good reason for that?

  • "He's got the most amazing phrasing...

he's got blazing amazing phrasing." ~ P. Gilbert

  • SHAWN IS A GENIUS!!!

  • See: SHAWN LANE PLAYS PIANO:)

I heard that Shawn was, according to keyboardist mag., named the second most proficient keyboardist of all time. God came in first but... many still dispute the tally;)

  • lets put it like this .. Shawn was a godly guitarist with blazing amazing phrasing ;)

see shred genre isnt bad at all, its fast, energetic n musical ....now watch u all nay sayers...playing paganini's 5th upto tempo isnt a joke..and its really shred !!

  • but i think i should point out that in my opinion--and quite frankly everyone's opinion--that hannah montana is an abomination to everything that music lovers worldwide hold dear. also, guthrie govan absolutely pwns!

  • just thought i'd take the opportunity to say that this isn't really a performance of any kind, just dicking around, so any assessments based on the ability shown here are quite obsolete... also, all this petty bickering is pointless. everyone has their own opinions, if meowprophecy thinks mozart is better and you guys think lane is better, well OK, thats fine. but neither of you are right are wrong, i could say hannah montana is the best & you have nothing to disprove that with. it's subjective.

  • THREE F I N G E R S:)-

    read between the lines!!!;)-

    lmao

  • Shawn isn't a shred guitarist!!!

Batio compared him to Mozart... do you know more than MAB? No, you still play guitar with 3 fingers... like I did when I was 6yrs. old. Most of todays greats sing Shawns praises... Govan, MAB, Cooley, Gilbert, Buckethead, Petrucci, Romeo, Timmons, Masi... Do you know more than them? hehe... REALITY check ;)

  • So you, and your TECHNIQUE of three fingered fumbling on the fretboard, do think you know more than MAB... thats funny!!! I'm 46 and you are 32... who's young?! Shawn is not shredder cuz you say, and Guthrie Govan isn't a shredder either. Every Shawn Lane song is a work of art!!!

  • So you didn't answer my question which came first and gave you the idea for your dumb question, and it went like this... MAB compared him to Mozart... Do you know more about music than MAB?

  • I can't answer that question because I don't know how much MAB knows. I'm just going to presume you don't really know much about mozart's music and that's ok. his influence on music was monumental and is universally celebrated at every respected music institution around the world. he wrote over 40 symphonies and 20 operas and is generally regarded as being one of the finest artists to ever walk the planet. please explain how shawn lane's musical accomplishments compare to mozart's

  • We all know the correct answer, and you are being resistant to the truth... which is the same as lying!!! No, you don't know crap next to Batio or Shawn... which is why you should STFU! THREE FINGERS!!! Bwaahahaha

  • I didn't compare him to Mozart MAB did! I'm sure he was referencing their immense talents. Personally, I won't lie (unlike you)... I don't know everything about Mozart, so I would never compare the two but... I think Shawn is the greatest guitarist/keyboardist/musician/artist ever!!! Good, now you got your answer, go away... hey, work on your technique,123

  • Yes.

  • @oilkills : you sound like an imbecile. a 5 year old one .. it's appearant that when it comes to Shawn Lane, an interesting discussion isn't going to happen.. because his fans appearantly are assholes who aren't open for a discussion.. becoming borderline religious when it comes to their idol.. if you don't know much about Mozart.. and think Shawn Lane's on parr with him... I feel very sorry for the school system you're in.

  • @TICETOCAR Wow YOU'RE STUPID!!! You insulted a genius... someone corrected you on your error then you call them names... LOSER!!! You are no artist... but you are a dumb ignorant bitch!

  • @TICETOCAR Hey MORON... the school system I'm from would teach your dumb old ass how to spell a third grade word like APPERANTLY correct!!! stupid loser troll (this is Evidence Based name calling... see the difference)

    OWNE:D

  • @TICETOCAR appearantly I've taught you something and... you quit so... Bye dumbitch!!!

  • @TICETOCAR anger? no no no, wrong again! I smiled as I OWNE:D you... Peace;)

  • Or even: 'Apparently'.. :P

  • I love Mozart and Shawn. While I agree Mozart's compositional skill are better than Shawn's, I like Shawn better because plays in a way I can relate to better.

They are both genius musicians who express themselves through music exactly the way they want to. If they choose different ways of expressing themselves, how can you say one is better?

  • hi, it's nice to read from a Shawn Lane fan who isn't defending him with an unparalleled agression lol

Somebody made the comment that Shawn is on parr with Mozart.. that is something different than what you're saying however..

Even though it's normal to prefer an artist over another, there's a difference between personal enjoyment based on preferences..and recognizing the scope of certain achievements, and what the work to reach these achievements entailed. hey, let's enjoy some music! :-)

  • I'm very sorry that you had to succomb to this. I am a lover of Shawn, and I know for a fact he would be very upset if his "fans" were treating you like these children are on here. Just know, there are respectable Lane fans. . .

  • @TICETOCAR I'm a Shawn Lane fan that is always up for a discussion.

    So what's up? :P

What is with the Mozart BullSHIT?? That is a whole other animal from a COMPLETELY different time period. Who brought him up? lol

  • @bertobgood2 hi there :-) decided to drop a line to set the record straight : it was not me who brought up the Mozart comparison.. because the comparison is dumb and totally unnecessary lol

Shawn is great as he is so why would someone need to make that comparision right? It's because fans of Shawn Lane have the tendency to talk about him in hyperboles ..

For a good example (and a good laugh): read comments of "oilkills" who excells in doing so; he brought up the Mozart comparison btw.

  • @TICETOCAR

You have proven your illiteracy for the 10th time now! I never said anything like that. I told you what MABatio said. Why do you fail to comprehend... ok, last time.

MAB said, "To me he was a guitar deity. Not human. All I wanted to do was listen, watch and learn from this Jedi Master on guitar. ... I was witnessing a moment in time measuring up to someone being able to see Mozart, Hendrix, Django, etc..." end quote Learn to Read! and I'll await your apology ;)) OWNE:D

  • you are right shawn is great lets enjoy the music instead of comparing artists! music is art and 'the best' is only what you preffer . i'm sure you'll agree

  • @TICETOCAR That's cool bro I'm not here to blame anything on anyone. People should just listen to what they love to listen to and if you're a serious musician, you should transcribe all of it.

  • @bertobgood2 we're cool, that's good :-) though I would encourage people to have their ears stretched by listening to music that they don't know.. so they shouldn't 'just' listen to music that they love ;-) they should also be able to express their disliking without some religiously fanatic fan talking shit about how wrong they are "because person x said this about him therefore it's true and you MUST like him as well lol.. Lane couldn't transcribe, still a very serious musican right? peace

  • the only reason i said to transcribe what u love is because it can really help your playing and ultimately, change your style. your own improvising is sort of like a mix of all of your influences(lots of times its not even guitar players.. nor musicians for that matter).. but thats cool i didn't know lane didn't transcribe.. i bet he could have easily tho at the level he was at..

ive been listening to a lot of music lately that i normally woudlnt. ITS GREAT=)

  • @bertobgood2

That guy knows nothing about Shawn and you'd be a fool to listen to him for one second... he's a hater! You can't be gullible enough to believe that Shawn couldn't transcribe just cuz he said so.

  • @bertobgood2

What?! Are you stupid!!! That's exactly what he said. Go back and read, or can you not comprehend the English language? Word for word, your guy, tic tac tomo said, and I quote, "Lane couldn't transcribe." But go ahead and believe Everything the hater says... it's cool if you're gullible. Peace;) LOL

  • @oilkills lmao who cares what he said. You're like a child. Stop being a bitch and listen to the music!!

  • Comment removed

  • Wait...Did someone say Shawn Lane couldn't transcribe ??

He was a fucking Fusion player, the (IMO) GREATEST one ever lived! Probably the fastest guitarist ever!

Also, merely the fact that he plays fusion implies that he knows alot of theory!

  • @Emil315

You can tell when you watch his videos too. Plus he's an pianist.

  • @Emil315 don't forget Allan Holdsworth please...

  • @SimulacronX I'm not, but in my opinion, Shawn Lane is better, but that's only my opinion. Altough you're right, they're both great players.

  • @Emil315 Sure. They got a lot in common I think. With their flying, light touch etc. Matter of taste, of course.

  • @Emil315

After John Maclaughin could be the fastest guitarist.

    However graet phrasing...

  • @Emil315 transcribing has nothing to do with theory....

  • @SpeakNoEvil123 Transcribing is actually a part of theory, so in a way, it does.

  • Silly Billy

  • gotta agree Meow here. Shawn Lane is no doubt my favourite electric guitarist, I absolutely adore his work, but Mozart is on a totally different level - composition-wise at least. Read about his life, and listen to his work it's amazing.... Shawn Lane is a huge inspiration to me, but to compare him to Mozart is just ludicrous. Lane was virtuosic in all meanings of the word, but virtuosic doesn't quite fit Mozart. In a league of his own...

  • If you feel that way about him you should know, by choice, he'd play keys/piano, and was prolly even better on keys which is nuts cuz he is the greatest guitarist of all time. See the video GUTHRIE GOVAN SHAWN LANE LESSON LESSON Discover why Shawns compositions are Godly. His unique polyrhythmic groupings incorporate math and geomtetry into music... art at the genius level! PLUS, a rate of speed few mortals have possessed!!! Shawns is a gifted genius and his compositions are a testament to that!

  • if i'm not mistaken, shawn lane has really been known more as a 'player' rather than a composer. mozart excelled at both. shawn had incredible chops but i'm sure his playing was as musical as some of his comrades. eric johnson, i think has a much better tone and despite maybe lacking in speed makes up for it in his note choices. shawn's tone sounds 'cheap' to me and the over usage of the wammy bar stamps a sort of 'hawaiian nightmare' aura on his sound which some may consider undesirable.

  • But nowhere near as undesirable as your unwarranted opinion. FYI, E.Johnson knew Shawn when he was very young and looked out for Shawn like a big brother. They've played together many times. Shawns tone is the cleanest... he can afford to use such a clean tone cuz his playing is the cleanest. He doesn't need to hide behind distortion;)

  • you have yet to hear any interesting shawn lane compositions??????????? wow, before you say anything else about shawn buy some of his cds. you'll immediately know what i'm talking about. i'm not being a smartass either.

  • maybe you could recommend one you in particular you feel strongly about. i was checking out this tune ' get you back '. what i found strange was why he choose to solo over the three chord progression or the outro, for as long as he did. the song had more harmonic motion and would served as a better improvisational vehicle. i felt like i didn't hear enough of the song. what impressed me the most was how he departs from the melody into his runs and then returns effortlessly. that was cool.

  • you should check out 'the hurt the joy', 'the way it has to be', 'gray pianos flying' and 'epilogue for lisa' to before you judge shawn..

  • Comment removed

  • i would recommend these cds;

    POWERS OF TEN

    ABSTRACT LOGIC

    TWO DOORS w/michael shrieve

    THE TRI-TONE FASCINATION

  • Yeah I would also suggest Not Again if you like how Shawn flips between runs and harmony. I have known about him for SO long, yet never listened to his music. Too afraid to, because I will like it, then have to learn it. Govan is already too much!

  • Comment removed

  • ok so ur saying Jonas hellborg hasnt got any musical sense to collaborate and play with Shawn for years.... I dont understand your comment nor do those ones who minus it I guess. Buy 'Two Doors' by Micheal Shrieve and have a go at it, u will discover the real Shawn Lane.

  • Lane has a different view on tone. He has weak pick ups because he wants to hear the guitar, not the pick ups. With weak pick ups, you get a thinner sound (which he has), but also get to really hear the characteristics of the guitar itself (wood, neck.) Eric Johnson is chained by his sound, unfortunately. He is super anal about having it JUST perfect. As in he won't play if it ain't right (or will whine profusely.) Not judging EJ, I can understand why he does it. His tone IS his sound.

  • Silly, silly billy

  • @KJobarre

i've heard the original many times why are you replying to me?

  • meowmeow confesses on a Django video that... he plays guitar with only three fingers... soo sad for you:(

  • Anger is what made you commit the childish act of name calling... Anger brought on by Frustration... the Frustration of knowing that YOU SUCK ON GUITAR!!!

  • Whatever... You are in no position to criticize Shawn Lane.

  • You lack reading comprehension (and fret hand coordination) so I'll state it in a fashion that a simple mind can understand... because Shawn Lane is the greatest... You should not criticize him cuz YOU SUCK ON GUITAR!!!

  • hey fuck off hes an amazing musician to

  • if you knew anything about music then you whould know that most of hes songs are brilliant ..

  • i'm not talking about this i'm talking about shawn as a guitarist anbd musician.. hes songs are very complicated and beutiful and don't reply to me anymore because i think your an idiot. you are one of those jealouse assholes who think that everyone that are more technical than you dosn't have any soul and dosn't make any good music.. shawn was great and you got nothing on him so please fuck of and learn to play with four fingers instead of three!!

  • and i know i spelled wrong but i was mad

  • Comment removed

  • If you judge the musicianship of Shawn lane by a few chords you are a in no position to critizies Shawn for musician ship. Check around. Ultimately all top guitarist today will credit shawn for something extraordinary.

And i dont assume you have the talent to merely copy one of his songs. And all the guitarist you mention are great. But its about taste dipfucker.

  • Music IS scales fuckhead. All guitar pieces and all music is written in scales. Thats music...

Shred is a therm YOU are implying. Personaly i see him as a jazz/fusion player, merely been practicing hard and long enough to play really fast. And why not imply that in his playing? I dont really asume you know what your talking about and of course your opinion is as good as mine. You just act like an ass.

  • Calm down man. He's just jammin on a couple chords, and you're talking about "ego"?

  • I'm a jazz guitairst and I thought this was great, that's a tricky chord melody he's worked out, most guys just play Giant Steps as a single note melody and with its big intervals it's tricky enough that way. Shawn's voice sound fine to me, too, really cool actually, wish i could do it that well. And this isn't even his primary genre, he's just goofing around! Anyone that needs further Shawn enlghtenment go listen to his "All Blues" youtube vid. Mindblowing stuff.

  • Petty children arguing on the internet, how...predictable.

Love ya Shawn, and love your music.

    RIP.

  • Yo, pricks, stop bitching about what voice leading is and enjoy the music.

Shawn Lane was a musical genius and musical talent. We should all respect that. Stop bitching and enjoy.

We only can enjoy so much of him now :(.

  • Nice video

  • No voice leading

  • you're right, but he's not a jazz guitarist, remember. i wonder if any shredder could do the same

  • Voice leading is a fundamental concept of harmony. To voice lead, you need to know the workings of harmony and different chord voicings. Having this knowledge gives one more options, and therefore leads to greater creativity, not less. Study up, you'll see.

  • You're quite welcome. I can read, but can you spell? Useful is with one 'l' not two. I didn't pull my definition out of a dictionary, but it seems that you might benefit from consulting one. And, really, did you have to call me a douche? Get some class.

  • Dude, you know nothing! Harmonic rules that were "old four hundred years ago"? (when were they "new"?). Are you saying voice leading is an outdated concept? Go back to school, sonny. Secondly, voice leading is not an issue of creativity. It has to do with understanding how harmony works and seeing all the ways to connect chords. Thirdly, if I can voice lead effectively, I can certainly play root position chords all around the neck in my sleep. Not so the other way around. See ya Pea brain.

  • Sunderlanding is a fuckin retard.

  • There are actual lyrics for this tune somewhere.

  • great!

  • Be are the kill young pen think gun thank

  • Ermmmm what?! lol

  • Most random comment I've seen on Youtube.

  • KILLIN IT!

  • LONG LIVE COLTRANE!!

  • and SHAW LANE!!

  • check out MIKE Stern.. and pat metheny..seriously

  • Look at him at the end. He's so happy.

  • god damn this guy is fucking amazing.

    shit.
