It's ironic that one of the very last songs he chose to perform before committing suicide is the one thought to be his most optimistic. Knowing what a self-aware artist Elliott Smith was, I don't think the irony would have been lost on him. Maybe singing so many sad and hurt-filled songs to exorcise his demons didn't work. Maybe he sang one last happy song in a final attempt to make the sadness go away. And maybe I am getting way ahead of myself in making all these conjectures.
