I wish more bass teachers would emphasize this lesson. In fifteen years of playing drums in bands professionally, I had TWO bassists that would lock in with me, so I switched. This seems to be a lesson that a lot of bass teachers (or wannabe bass teachers) forget.
When I play bass, I hear the snare more than the kick beat. I was taught to accent the 1st beat, but that coincides with the first snare hit. So my quieter strum/pluck of my bass has to coincide with bass/kick drum. I'm trying to fix that, but it doesn't come natural. It takes pure mechanical/discipline force, which quickly bores me....stop playing for awhile. Any tips?
One of my favourite things about playing bass is when I get one of those "ah ha" moments. I just had one of those watching this video. Thanks a ton, man.
Very good! Being a bass player which also plays drums, you see the importance of your drum part. As a bass player you rely on the beat provided by the drummer, but when YOU play the drums, you see how difficult it is to have a steady rhythm and provide that certain "carelessness" about the beat bass players can enjoy.
Great advice, Joe, thank you. I'm originally a keyboard player but I recently started learning bass...my new favorite instrument. Something I've learned in the studio is this: No matter how good a keyboard player's left hand may be, s/he will NEVER be able to reproduce the sound or feel of a real bass. I love the bass and I'm learning a lot from your tutorials. Thank you. Keep 'em coming!
I won't argue with the Duke and you have expressed that concept very well man, So all I will say that people THINK themselves right out of the groove. They don't want to groove they have a narcissistic streak in them that makes them want to be the center of attention.
Duke Ellington said in his book Music Is My Mistress that rhythmic feel, not just counting time, is something that you can't learn, ya either got it or you don't. this is why you hear so many busy ass bassists that have great technique but can't lock a groove.
Excellent advice! As a bassist and a former drummer, I think this is the most important bass playing advice you will ever find. When working on a new tune, I stand next to the drummer and watch his foot on the kick drum. If you do this and also listen closely, everybody will greatly appreciate it!
Hahahahahaha think like a drummer...I get this lesson but it's the "think like a drummer" I couldn't get over..I don't even think my drummer can do that..it's the constant battle of the blood supply from his little head and big head..there ain't enough blood to supply both at the same time, hahahaha
As far as playing in a band, (I'm primarily a guitarist learning some bass) I really listen for that driving bass guitar when I'm playing rhythm. This really helps me find my down beat and keep in time while singing. Bassists! listen to this man's words of wisdom!
I disagree that a bass player should ALWAYS lock into the rhythm section. Thats what makes reggae great, the guitar usually locks in the rhythm and the bass is free to float around
I started off as a drummer,gigged a few years as one,got diagnosed with SLE lupus as a teen had to give drums a break,went back to singing....now I'm a singer,pt drummer,and I'm learning bass at 35!Just for myself really,but thanks,I enjoy your style of teaching!Maybe it's the drummer connection!lol Thanks man!Barbaranne
Can you learn to be a good bass player by just playing bass? This video confirms what I've always suspected. Can't just play bass. Gotta know regular guitar, drums or even piano to "understand" how the bass functions. Seems best bass players have always been ex-guitarists or drummers. I even stopped "memorizing" strict bass tabs, and prefer to just find guitar chords to tell me the root.
@trexinvert Well, you CAN be a good bass player by "just playing bass" but, You'll be even better the more you're aware of. I started playing guitar, but instead of playing chords, I played bass lines, so I got my self a bass, later on I started messing with guitar again, and then drums (since I was in a band as soon as I got my bass). I've been playing for about 3 years now and playing all 3 instruments HELPS you understand bass better. That's all I can say from personal experience.
BASSISTS! - ffs, STOP thinking like drummers and think like musicians... get as many strings as you feel like and do w/e you want. Stop listening to traditionalists, and experiment. Otherwise you'll always wind up staged behind the guys who do. The bass guitar is about 60 years old; it's too young to get stuck in tradition. Also, notice - the second word in "bass guitar" is...?
@m0moiro there's a difference between percussive and tonal instruments. percussive parts by definition cannot be as complex as tonal parts. so telling a bassist to think like a drummer is a deliberate attempt to "dumb down" the bass as an instrument. youtube "steve bailey bass" and see if you think he needs to think like a drummer.
@PRIMEx420 You misunderstood my comment. I was simply responding to the fact that you said stop thinking like drummers and think like musicians. Your wording implies that drummers are not musicians, which they are. I didn't say anything about bassists needing to think like drummers. I don't think they do. I think they should think like bassists.
@PRIMEx420 I might have expressed myself badly. It's not just about drums. I'm a drummer as well. I also play guitar and keys. I'd like for all musicians to be aware of their musical surroundings.
Hello, I am new at playing bass, I have it for 2 weeks. And when I saw your title I was like, that's exactly my problem. The melodic parts are easier to memorize and play since they are played by the lead guitar and the bass (sometimes 2nd guitar too) often. I just find it SOO hard to catch the rhythm parts, I used to play like 1-2 hours of guitar for fun becos my brother has one, I like more bass becos of it's sound but stil I need to fix that rhythm part. Your video helped quite a bit. Thanks!
@CoolBear777 I think what they meant was that the video is titled "Bass in 60 Seconds" yet the lesson goes way beyond the 60 seconds. It should have been titled "Bass in 190 Seconds."
I've practiced conga and drum patters lifted right off videos here, or from the book "Afro-Cuban Grooves for Bass and Drums" by Robby Ameen and Lincoln Goines. I think it fosters a better understanding of rhythm. It can't hurt to know exactly what the drummer is doing and be able to kinda replicate it on the bass.
Think like a drummer? Well I am a drummer who wants to take up bass so works for me! Thanks for the videos, I've watched a few and hope to use them to aid me as I learn : )
@chrisbrien Thank you so much!! I think everyone should try to learn about as many instruments as you find interesting. I think we could gain some valuable insight into how things work and why. We may never be the most proficient at them but it sure makes music fun! Take care!!
@NathanMantle Right on! Be a bass player. More jobs to be had for a good one. I work quite a bit. I'm very thankful that people enjoy working with me. All the best!
If more people would watch this short simple video, there would be a lot more groove in modern music. Unfortunately we have a collection of bassists who play bass like a guitar, and forget the rhythmic aspect.
@dharmaseed There is that angle as well. Learn all you can with regard to as many styles, and instruments as you can. I love listening to pianists and horn players - not just bassists and guitarists. We are products of our influences. We all should keep our minds, ears, and hearts open to everything. You never know what great music will come of it! :)
bass is always said to be the most simple instrument to play: just play the same thing and you dont have to do solos. but i think its the hardest to play cuz its very important to stay stady and solid. buss is way underrated
Could the same type of thinking also be applied if you are a bass player who uses a pic? I dont play the bass myself, I play the guitar. I'm just curious how thinking like a drummer could apply to a bass player who might use a pic.
Very cool! That was really helpful way to think about things. I'm just doing the cover band thing right nand we now. We most of the time try to stay right with how the orginal was done, but when we start on the orginals, probaly about this time next year that mentality will help in a big way. My band is" Melting Myth", check us out on facebook and myspace.
Hey ,cool bear.I just would love to thank you for these videos. Its really awesome what your doing and giving your advice.all your techniques and tips have totally helped me understand the instrument more and become an overall better bassist.
Good advice. I think bands would be more coherent if they would think like one another when they write their partts. I'll start thinking like a bass player. We'll see how that works out.
i am learning American Pie. It is in G major. It has an Am in it. That would make it the second, also known as Dorian. I don't think there is an Am Dorian scale? In rock is it more likely to just focus on the chord itself as opposed to its place in the key?
@manderson1us Just A Dorian. It's related to the key of G. Melodic music like this song, relies heavily on key/chord structure. It does have an oddball chord. The A7. He was just being kooky! :)
i married into a family of musicians and u r right when you say to be a solid player. i get more invites now that i am more solid . its great to slap and stuff but being on point will always get u noticed> thanks for the tips also, they help alot
Bass is the other instrument in the rhythm section along with the drums. When I was a bassist I learned how to make a drummer improvise with assorted rolls or cymbal splashes with eye contact. You have to connect with the drummer in a manner the rest of the band can't.
I can still do the same as a guitarist but I leave it to the bassist.
crap, simple but helpful my kinda tut.

As a drummer who is trying to learn bass myself, this is very helpful. Thanks dude!

Could the same type of thinking also be applied if you are a bass player who uses a pic? I dont play the bass myself, I play the guitar. I'm just curious how thinking like a drummer could apply to a bass player who might use a pic.

@Raphael326 Same ideas apply.

Very cool! That was really helpful way to think about things. I'm just doing the cover band thing right nand we now. We most of the time try to stay right with how the orginal was done, but when we start on the orginals, probaly about this time next year that mentality will help in a big way. My band is" Melting Myth", check us out on facebook and myspace.

i've heard that bass can be used to glue the guitar track and the drum track together, so this vid made complete sense to me.

Thanks,
manderson1us 1 year ago
@manderson1us Just A Dorian. It's related to the key of G. Melodic music like this song, relies heavily on key/chord structure. It does have an oddball chord. The A7. He was just being kooky! :)

Joe,
Bass is the other instrument in the rhythm section along with the drums. When I was a bassist I learned how to make a drummer improvise with assorted rolls or cymbal splashes with eye contact. You have to connect with the drummer in a manner the rest of the band can't.
I can still do the same as a guitarist but I leave it to the bassist.
I still love to play my 57 P-bass.
