Carl Sagan - "Our collective free time needs to shift as much as possible to education. Whether you're a young student or finished school long ago, get out to the library whenever you can and work hard to learn everything you can about this world. Each individual and society will benefit from being able to solve more problems and make better decisions. Education is an amazing discovery process that repays you endlessly."
I can only scarcely imagine the clarity of thought that Carl Sagan might have possessed to say these words I just heard. A genuine champion! Thank you Dr. Sagan!
As much as I like Neil deGrasse Tyson, this is what he lacks. Tyson loves to be descriptive about the grandness of the universe, and is inspiring in his own way. Sagan is poetic and introspective, makes you understand the frailty and flawed existence of humanity. If we don't venture to the stars then we are lying in our graves.
Tears, this speech still brings tears to mine eyes. After hearing it dozens of times over, it still has yet to lose it's great significance and meaning. Words to live by, and words to remember for all.
Pale Blue Dot is one of the most poignant 3 minutes ever written and recorded.
I've known many people who changed their lives during these 3 minutes. Some became instant agnostics and humanists, some went back to school or simply found personal peace. A feeling that humbles any theology, nationalism or sport.
"There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this image of our tiny world."
No matter how many times I hear this it still inspires. Carl gave science poetry, making you feel insignificant and supreme at the same time.
A future generation of our decendants will take the first flights beyond our Solar System to worlds beyond; looking back home Sagan's words will still speak.
What a man...we are not worthy...yet again we refuse to listen...this man was a sage.....a truh prophet and visionary may God rest his soul and may they be having an interesting chat as we speak...
Don't belittle his accomplishments by suggesting he is now enjoying the afterlife - he did not believe in such a thing. As he said on a number of occasions: "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence."
I said an innocent comment and get crap like that from smaakjeks and arthenor007. You are the sort of people that think you know the truth. But if you have read any sort of philosophy you would know that there is no capital T truth out there, sorry guys.
The fact remains that it is strange the earth came out in that way.
well, I just politely suggested that other stuff on pale blue dot (and all of sagan's work, for that matter) are far more wonderful and interesting than that. Just my opinion...
but when you try to combine science and faith the wrong way, you get scientology, which is a highly successful corporation whose product is insane bullshit.

He says it's a fluke that Earth is suspended in a beam of light, but who says it's fluke. It took tens of thousands of years for man to take a picture of Earth from a distance and when we did we are settled in a beam of light. It might be the Sun, the optics used, exposure time, but that fact remains that we are the only planet suspended in that light, you can't say it doesn't make ya think! I'm not too religious, but it's either funny or telling that the Earth came out looking that way.
Of all the notions to take from this video, that was what you noticed? It was a coincidence. There are far more amazing things in our universe than accidental lense flares from space probes.
It doesn't make me think. Not at all. We know that no such band of light is present anywhere near earth. Therefore we can assume it has something to do with the lense of the camera. Possibly divine intervention? Why not a triangle, or a bottle? Because it doesn't apply to the laws of optics. The phenomenon can be explained by 'geometry and optics' or by divine intervention. Occam's Razor urges us to take the simpler explanation. I'll let you decide which one that is.
"think of the rivers of blood spilled to become momentary masters of a fraction of dot."....makes you wonder sometimes..how trivial most things that we fight for are in the grand scheme of things
Superb use of pictures, music, and footage, to complement Sagan's words. All three parts have been well put together and add to the power of Sagan's elegant, wise words.
Sort of. I think he was a great man, but it was his singular gift for popularizing science and inspiring people to study the world that made him so great. As a scientist he was decent, but not outstanding, but as a writer and promoter of science - a truly magnificent human being.
I...wow....i...wow.

It is ironic that you talk about Sagan, and God rest his soul. And a interesting chat with God. For Carl Sagan was an atheist.

This book does "make me think", A LOT, but not about that oO.
That's just a coincidence. And the "suspended in a beam of light" thing was more poetry than science.

the way with words is so dreamy.. ' a mode of dust suspended on a sunbeam.'. its like it should be set to music so songful

So poetic these words. Yet, powerful in Sagan's opinion that everyone should agree to them.
