i find pink floyd to be the most boring shit, even dave gilmour says he can't imagine himself listening to the long soloing! at 2:40!
if you are stoner then pink floyd is great, but to me it's plain boring, each song sounds the fuckin same. pink floyd aren't even in my top 100 bands of all time ffs.
If I had a week to live, I would rather listen to 10 seconds of David Gilmour than the entire catalog of every "shredder" on the planet. Somewhere along the way the guitar was turned into mathematics and gymnastics - with no musicality whatsoever...unless you count the quasi "neo-classical" scrum... 99% of those players have never been to a philharmonic orchestral performance and don't know anything musical prior to about 1980 - but they can 'shred' Bach and Mozart into utter monotony.
@GrenadeCatcher If you see David Gilmour and Marty Friedman alongside even if it was the same tune it wouldn't sound the same just because of how they strum, the approach each one has for the scales and the way they fret. What kind of musician are you? If you are one that is...
@thehornypuppy What kind of musician am i? Im the kind of musician that has played guitar longer than you've been alive junior. On top of that ive also played bass, sax, drums, piano and violin. My musical references are not what is in question here. Any person with half a brain can figure out what a bend is and to waste time asking a master like gilmour retarded questions shows how you conduct a bad interview.
@david8157 No it really wasnt. Any interviewer worth their salt does research on who/what they are interviewing to avoid such idiotic mistakes. This is a prime example of someone who just didnt put in the time to learn about guitar and in doing so asked probably the most inane question you could ask a guitarist short of "what is this thing you're holding here". Also resorting attacking me just proves that you yourself are incapable of using logic and instead are a reactionary child.
@david8157 Im not a know it all but i know how to bend. And if you want to learn guitar you watch and instructional video on it. You're the pompous ass defending an incompetent interviewer. I guess you act the same way in life going around asking people obvious questions looking like a moron.

@GrenadeCatcher well is not really a bad question. Gilmour is known for adding vibrato to their bends, witch is a very difficult technique.. but obviously that's not the way to ask it
@GrenadeCatcher Steve Vai identifies at least 6 different bending and vibrato techniques. Not everyone is a guitar player, what if those people don't know what it means? He asked a question and it was answered. I've been playing guitar for 30+ years, this didn't strike me as a "stupid ass question" in the least
@terrormonkey1 after this post, I will no longer entertain your brainless rambling, after all, insults are the first and last arguments of fools. I did want to say 2 things though. First, you must lead quite a sad, pathetic, miserable existence. And second, maybe I will go listen to Tori, I actually like her as well as Gilmour, two artists that have more talent than you could ever even dream to have. You will never amount to anything more than the laughable Internet tough-guy that you are now.
@terrormonkey1 wow man, you are a complete fucking joke. You've really got nothing better to do than spout your closed-minded juvenile insults at people? Get a life, jackass.
That #00001 Strat he has is actually a FrankenStrat. The original #00001 Stratocaster had it's body and neck separated and was given to two different guitarists, both of whom completed their #00001's with other 1950's bodies and necks, respectively. So there's actually two #00001 Strats in the world. And I want one so bad haha.
@skywardism i know, and in the same room with mr gilmour its positively nauseating!!! david shitty gilmour even being considered a decent guitarist, let alone one of the greats is a testament to the volume of the upper middle classes in britain and their shit taste in music....
@terrormonkey1 what video are you watching?? I NEVER said the Black Strat was #00001, secondly, you've obviously never heard him play that thing properly, or you must be an idiot to be unable to hear that thing's amazing tone, and it's obviously you who are the ten thumbed ear rapist" as you so say, as Gilmour is a virtuoso, I'm guessing you're some guy who picked up the guitar to distract women from his incredibly small penis, but was shit at that too, just an all round fail heh?
@0Heavy0Metal0 He plays guitar, but he's a composer, producer and has a sh!tload of acclaimed songs with millions of fans and some of the most listened to albums on earth, ever... probably a whole universe cooler than a "guitarist" huh?
The "best" guitarist doesn't exist, and certainly, our ideas of who the best guitarists are are defined more by our ignorance than experience.
@Peteyuse uhh...I hate to tell you this, but I was being sarcastic. Pink Floyd and Gilmore are my two favorite musical entities on this planet. I just wrote that idiotic comment to see who would write a scathing, drama filled reply, and you won! It's called "trolling" and you need to learn to avoid being so serious. Just kiddin' around. And yes, I am an asshole, bastard, whatever you can come up with. I am so numb to it all, you could say I am comfortably numb. (like the little joke there?)
I notice how a lot of the players, especially from the last couple of generations, speak about guitars in basic physical terms. Players now have too much of a head full of technical terms from guitar magazine tabs. If anyone besides Gilmour called the strings "wires", they'd get laughed out of the building, but there is a paradox here.
solo on for hours... (pause) it's a lot of fun to do...(pause) I can't imagine it would be fun to be in the audience and listen to it.. END. hmmm lmfao
they both are very good...but david gilmore is more clean with his bends and notes..(slower) jimmy page is faster but slightly more sloppy...either way both r god
@MixxMasterKid Both are excellent guitarists, and have the respect of thousands if not millions of other guitar players. Just to say that Jimmy Page is better is not specific. In what ways is Page better? Gilmour is my favorite guitarist, and Page my second. But the two are so different that to compare them is purely apples and oranges. Whereas Page feels the blues like no other rock player, Gilmour is very much about the flow of the song as a whole, and where his guitar fits into that.
@trumpetguitarguy I more had Gilmour down as more bluesey personally and Page's strength being more folk orientated and rock and roll. But each of us has different ears I suppose...
@ibuprofen303 You're totally right that each of us have different ears. Allow me to explain what I meant. Page is more of the overall blues feel of a I7, IV7, V7, I7 feel, or the chords and structure behind the feeling of the blues. Gilmour, as I hear it, has more of the "stock" blues licks, and uses them a lot more than Page. So in soloing, I agree, Gilmour has more of a blues feel, but in overall sound, I think it's Page all the way.
It's a good question because you can't band how ever you want, you must stay in the key; if you bend to much for instance, you may sound 'out of scale'. You must target the note you want emphasize.. just my humble opinion :)
@woutertron This is a video about how to get that "Pink Floyd" sound. And he asks about bending, a basic guitar playing skill. Sorry, but in this respect it was an incredibly dumb question and a complete waste of an interview.
@Demoras "Getting that Pink Floyd sound" is an unbelievably broad topic. I'm sure the BBC is sorry that you, personally, were offended that they made David Gilmour waste his breath on something so pedestrian as explaining, in no less than two sentences, how to pull on a guitar string.
@woutertron Don't try to be a wiseguy, please. You're a bloody dramaqueen, you know that?
The topic is quite broad, yes, but the basics of it can be explained within 6 minutes. It has a lot to do with chord choices, voicings and changes. Talking about that would've actually answered the question. But the interviewer instead goes ahead and asks about something completely uninteresting and leaves the original question unanswered. You cannot get around this. It's a terrible interview!
@Demoras So it is objectively a terrible interview because you already knew the answer to the question the interviewer was asking. You don't seem to understand that this is a television programme for ordinary television viewers, not an in-depth compositional workshop for trained musicians.
@woutertron No, I never said that. Please don't twist my words to your liking.
I am saying that from a teaching perspective it does not answer the question that the interviewer and the viewers are asking. The interviewer asks a question for the viewers, but never answers it by diverting from the topic, leaving the viewers without a good answer. How to bend strings leaves the viewers with little to try at home. Teaching them basic chord choices would inspire them to experiment. Nothin in-depth.
@Demoras This interview was not meant to literally teach you how to get Pink Floyd's sound. I'm sure Gilmour was perplexed as to why the interviewer would decide to ask him such a basic, level-1-guitarist question, so he gave a simple and quick answer. It's not really meant for people to 'try at home.' I thought it was a stupid question deserving a simple, quick response, then move on.
Wow... I love how to interviewer obviously was prepared for the interview and asked awesome questions like how do you bend... Not like it's self explanatory or anything -__-"
@00sven00sven00 Ta.. Iv been waiting for some one to comment on my remarks on bending. There's lots of great guitarist out there. Gilmour has a very unique sound I like them all
He's so right, everyone's guitar is so personal with them once they have found what the sound stuck in their mind, you bond an unexplainable relationship with it <3
Sorry but how do you bend isn't a stupid question. Usually the objective is to bend a string, usually 1st, 2nd or 3rd strings, two steps up or, the equivalent of two fretts. Once you hit that note, try to put a small vibrato on it by moving your finger up and down on the frett board or neck. This will make the note sound wavy and according to what you're playing will add some feel to it. The harder you hit the note the heavier the sound, blues for instance. Watch my video, you'll hear it's role.
@davidnhc7 Everybody bends strings differently. Some use any one of the index, middle, or ring fingers independently. Some use any combination of 2 or 3 fingers as well. Some use mild vibrato when they bend. Some use heavy vibrato, others use none at all. Lots of different variables for the same technique..
@davidnhc7 Not so stupid really. It's very easy for begineers, and even some profesionals, not to take the aproppiate care for your bendings, making a good bend speaks a lot about how good you really are at guitar. If I find myself in front of someone who has played some of the best bendings in all history, I would definetly ask him how could I do it.
I remember seeing/hearing David Gilmour for the first time when he had his candy apple red strat on the Delicate Sound of Thunder video - that was when I was first introduced to Pink Floyd, and David's guitar playing has never ceased to amaze and inspire me. He's the reason I play the guitar today - the ENORMOUS amount of emotion he puts into his playing... all I can say is "WOW!" He's an absolutely outstanding, superb guitarist! Hats off to you, my idol, Mr. David Gilmour!
truly good music is beyond fads, appreciated by parent and child, it continues to resonate with all of us, whether you grew up with Floyd or not, they captured a quiet note in our souls, a place that feels the depth of joy/sorrow, the melancholy all without directing any one single emotion, when it is pliable and relevant to all moods, when we are feeling amazing, when we are down, when we reflect, that is beautiful.
They shouldn't allow noobs like this dude around Mr. Gilmour.. how do you bend??? really dude?

@michael1234144 no... jimmy page pisses on shitty gilmour, from heights un-obtainable on this planet...
terrormonkey1 2 weeks ago
@MixxMasterKid Both are excellent guitarists, and have the respect of thousands if not millions of other guitar players. Just to say that Jimmy Page is better is not specific. In what ways is Page better? Gilmour is my favorite guitarist, and Page my second. But the two are so different that to compare them is purely apples and oranges. Whereas Page feels the blues like no other rock player, Gilmour is very much about the flow of the song as a whole, and where his guitar fits into that.
trumpetguitarguy 2 weeks ago
@trumpetguitarguy I more had Gilmour down as more bluesey personally and Page's strength being more folk orientated and rock and roll. But each of us has different ears I suppose...
ibuprofen303 2 weeks ago
@ibuprofen303 You're totally right that each of us have different ears. Allow me to explain what I meant. Page is more of the overall blues feel of a I7, IV7, V7, I7 feel, or the chords and structure behind the feeling of the blues. Gilmour, as I hear it, has more of the "stock" blues licks, and uses them a lot more than Page. So in soloing, I agree, Gilmour has more of a blues feel, but in overall sound, I think it's Page all the way.

How do you bend ? "you just push..." hahaha
VercettiVice 2 weeks ago
It's a good question because you can't band how ever you want, you must stay in the key; if you bend to much for instance, you may sound 'out of scale'. You must target the note you want emphasize.. just my humble opinion :)

@woutertron But then that poses the question, Why they fuck is someone who knows nothing about guitar interviewing David Gilmour about guitar?
tart9 2 weeks ago
@tart9 Because he has many fans and admirers who cannot play an instrument and are interested in knowing how he does things?

@woutertron But it is interesting to watch such an amazing player showing the basics.

B4MyVALLENTINE 2 weeks ago
@woutertron This is a video about how to get that "Pink Floyd" sound. And he asks about bending, a basic guitar playing skill. Sorry, but in this respect it was an incredibly dumb question and a complete waste of an interview.
Demoras 2 weeks ago
@Demoras "Getting that Pink Floyd sound" is an unbelievably broad topic. I'm sure the BBC is sorry that you, personally, were offended that they made David Gilmour waste his breath on something so pedestrian as explaining, in no less than two sentences, how to pull on a guitar string.
woutertron 2 weeks ago
@woutertron Don't try to be a wiseguy, please. You're a bloody dramaqueen, you know that?
The topic is quite broad, yes, but the basics of it can be explained within 6 minutes. It has a lot to do with chord choices, voicings and changes. Talking about that would've actually answered the question. But the interviewer instead goes ahead and asks about something completely uninteresting and leaves the original question unanswered. You cannot get around this. It's a terrible interview!

@Demoras So it is objectively a terrible interview because you already knew the answer to the question the interviewer was asking. You don't seem to understand that this is a television programme for ordinary television viewers, not an in-depth compositional workshop for trained musicians.
woutertron 2 weeks ago
@woutertron No, I never said that. Please don't twist my words to your liking.
I am saying that from a teaching perspective it does not answer the question that the interviewer and the viewers are asking. The interviewer asks a question for the viewers, but never answers it by diverting from the topic, leaving the viewers without a good answer. How to bend strings leaves the viewers with little to try at home. Teaching them basic chord choices would inspire them to experiment. Nothin in-depth.
Demoras 2 weeks ago
@Demoras This interview was not meant to literally teach you how to get Pink Floyd's sound. I'm sure Gilmour was perplexed as to why the interviewer would decide to ask him such a basic, level-1-guitarist question, so he gave a simple and quick answer. It's not really meant for people to 'try at home.' I thought it was a stupid question deserving a simple, quick response, then move on.

He's so right, everyone's guitar is so personal with them once they have found what the sound stuck in their mind, you bond an unexplainable relationship with it <3
davidwantsahug 3 weeks ago
Sorry but how do you bend isn't a stupid question. Usually the objective is to bend a string, usually 1st, 2nd or 3rd strings, two steps up or, the equivalent of two fretts. Once you hit that note, try to put a small vibrato on it by moving your finger up and down on the frett board or neck. This will make the note sound wavy and according to what you're playing will add some feel to it. The harder you hit the note the heavier the sound, blues for instance. Watch my video, you'll hear it's role.

How do you bend? What a stupid ass question.
davidnhc7 3 weeks ago 64
@davidnhc7 Everybody bends strings differently. Some use any one of the index, middle, or ring fingers independently. Some use any combination of 2 or 3 fingers as well. Some use mild vibrato when they bend. Some use heavy vibrato, others use none at all. Lots of different variables for the same technique..
hepatitis123 3 weeks ago
@davidnhc7 no it's not, this is not a show for guitarists, it's for the general public, there different ways to bend

@davidnhc7
how is that stupid..there are so many nuances in just bending. he might have meant what is your technique to bending..you probably do not play guitar
ambush77 2 weeks ago
