  • You're struggling with first passage from the Sickness. Might I suggest reading Hegel's Phenomenology of the Spirit for a few months and then coming back to it. I read that first paragraph from chapter 1 as a joke poking fun of Hegel. You're supposed to struggle with it, as many readers do through Hegel - and as much as it "might make sense" it also makes no sense. It's a critique of Hegel and his system, the self makes no sense. He's blowing the System up with parody.

  • You seem to be having some trouble, which is expected with Kierkegaard, esp. with the S.U.D. This might help:

You have to keep in mind that while the self is a relation that relates itself to itself, the self is NOT the relation, but the relatING of the self to itself. That is, it is the ACT of relating, for example, the dialectical poles in your self (e.g. finite, infinite). Also, the self does not create itself, it's created by God, and ignoring this is an instance of despair.

  • @Amadmansladder this is helpful. the reason I do these videos is to make sure I am understanding as much as possible. I am going to make a video about SUD soon, and will discuss your input there.

    your help is much appreciated.

  • Now I get it! Being envious means that you want to throw your real self (sort of self hatred) and get into the other self thus a person becomes desperate in order to achieve his/her goal to be someone he/she wants to be. I really like this type of philosophy because this touches my own life views. Thanks! ^_^

My ugliest trait would be envy. I never find myself that cool or unique enough. The more I strive to become someone else and fail, the more I became unhappy.

  • @VlogOfTheDayWithGelE I also thought this was very interesting. the being of the self being questioned and being messed up is something cool to think about. I was reading this and thinking about human emotions and how they relate to how this happens. I will keep making videos on existentialism like this. thanks.
