@Ineedthat06 Shawn wasn't underscored on bars and Nastia wasn't overscored. She just made tiny tiny tiny mistakes that added up through the competition like her vault, close catches on bars, and wobbles on beam.
I do think Nastia was wayyy overscored on her uneven bars, especially with that huge step. Nastia has done better bars routines and it still was never that high, even with a stuck dismount... and Shawn was underscored on bars, and thats how she lost the title
@Ineedthat06 nastia's bar routine wasn't over-scored. her start value was huge, and so regardless of how big of a step she took on the dismount (it was only .3 anyway) she was always going to get a huge bar score no matter what. shawn wasn't underscored on anything, she was extremely over-scored in EVERY competition in the U.S. and it made it seem like she was underscored during the olympics, when in fact the international judges were just better and more fair than U.S. ones.
i love nastia and shawn. i wish there was 2 gold medals <3 but theyre both having a comback this year!!! lets forget about the past and look forward to London 2012! <3GO SHAWN AND NASTIA!!! <3 ( and Alicia Sacromone and Chellsie Memmel..i like them to!) :)
Of course Shawn was disappointed and what sets her apart from most is that she has the grace to not feel 'entitled' to a gold medal. I've seen the Russian gymnasts (and others) and no matter if you think they were better or should have won or not you can probably agree that they don't have any sense of sportsmanship. Shawn looks at the metal, takes a deep breath and forces a smile not in anger or pettiness but resignation. Nastia was better that day. I believe Shawn knew that. Shawn=Pure Class
Shawn deserved that gold. She was overall the better gymnast. those scores dont always mean anything. if you look at Shawn's work and her track record, she IS the better gymnast. and little Nastia knew it. :)
@Huskyowner2007 yea, THAT DAY. thats why those scores are bullshit and dont mean anything. shawn's record is better, her scores over time were better. that's what makes her the better athlete. shawn knows and so does Nastia.
@ILoveFriedFetus The scores are bullshit? Nastia routine on uneven bars difficulty were 7.7 and did well of course she scored 16.650. But on Vault, and beam Shawn scored better. Shawn just lack the difficulties on uneven bars, and floor which cost her that gold medal. Besides, Nastia was close to flawless in all her routines. She stuck her dismounts on the balance beam, and vault. The Floor she did well too. There were a few hops here or there and she had artistry in her floor routine.
@Huskyowner2007 you are talking about ONE day. check out Shawn's record over time. better than Nastia's. Nastia got lucky on that particular day. bet if they repeated the entire thing over again like three days later, you'd have different results. you see it in a sport such as gymnastics all the time. I remember watching Nastia in other competitions (other than the Olympics) and she didnt do all that wonderfully. Nastia got lucky. Shawn is the better overall athlete.
@ILoveFriedFetus Well, athletes have their bad days too. Shawn can't win them all. It's better that another American( Nastia) beat her rather than (Chinese) Yang Yulin. It just showed that the Women USA gymnastics program is strong and better than most countries. It is still strong today with Jordyn Wieber who just won 2011 the All Around World Gymnastics Championship title and team title as well. Plus vault Gold with Macaronie, Aly Raisman floor Bronze, and Jordyn beam Bronze. Not bad at all.
@ILoveFriedFetus Nastia didn't get lucky! She performed like a PRO under pressure with difficulties in all her routines. She earned it and work hard for it! Don't say she got lucky that day. She beat Shawn fair and square!
@ILoveFriedFetus Since when was this about track record? Its all about who was better on the day and able to handle the pressure. Not their track records.
Okay honestly... I love Nastia, and I wanted her to win this medal in the AA. But I'm not going to be biased. I believe that the reason why Shawn stared at the medal is because she just wasn't sure if she should raise her medal up high for the picture or not, so she looked at what Nastia would do. And when Nastia did it, it was like an "Okay I'll do it too" moment for Shawn. LOL
@glenndelossantos15 Actually I agree with you. Maybe Shawn was disappointed or sad but in that video I don't see any tremendous jelousy or dissapointement on her face....
@free2write26 I completely agree! Besides Shawn did the best she could its not like she had a fall that cost her the gold. (Rebecca Bross for example. Now that shows good sportsmansip)
wow. the way shawn stares at nastia's medal, then settles for her silver and forces a smile, speaks volume. kudos to her for not being negative (at least in public) and pretending not to be too disappointed. that's sportsmanship for you.

@shrimp78910 Shawn's total difficulty was a 26.3, Nastia had a 26.1. Johnson didn't really do way harder skills. Liukin's bars made up for it.

Nastia is my favorite gymnast, but this WAS her time. It was her last chance, since she was too young to make the team in 2004.
Shawn's going to try for 2012, and who knows? Maybe she'll get finally get gold!
But this was Nastia's moment.
After 2007, and being overshadowed by Shawn for so long, she deserved this!
