Tough call. Milk farmers are subsidized by the government to keep milk at a low cost in the stores, and they provide a valueable, thankless service. However, the free market should dictate pricing instead of government regulation. The post office is heavily subsidized, and it is failing in many areas. I know of 12 post offices that have closed in the last two years.

The system is free at the point of entry and in most cases it is possible to see a doctor the same day. there is never any paperwork to be completed or authorizations before treatment can go ahead. Tough call. Milk farmers are subsidized by the government to keep milk at a low cost in the stores, and they provide a valueable, thankless service. However, the free market should dictate pricing instead of government regulation. The post office is heavily subsidized, and it is failing in many areas. I know of 12 post offices that have closed in the last two years.
I think if I had to choose between government control and free markets, I'd take the latter and let the cards fall.

No, but consumer spending drives market behavior. If a mom-and-pop grocery store jacks milk prices to $4 during a blizzard because people can't drive elsewhere, the people remember that and will not forget his behavior. He'll lose business and he'll eventually collapse from his horrible market practices.

Regulatory agencies in the US fail at exercising their full duties and are often, captured by the industries they regulate. SEC is a prime example with regard to Madoff. The SEC was intimately aware of his activities, as far back as the 90's, yet they remained silent.

Those who wish to can purchase a private insurance which is cheap (because it is competing against something everybody already has). The public system is paid for through taxes which are much less than the premiums paid in America for health insurance. The system provides complete liberty (which many Americans profess to be fond of) to change jobs etc without worry of loosing coverage. I urge any Americans reading this not to be taken in by the stupidity and greed of Republicans and lobbyists

I live in Spain. Here we have a universal healthcare system that is ranked 7th in the world. The system is free at the point of entry and in most cases it is possible to see a doctor the same day. there is never any paperwork to be completed or authorizations before treatment can go ahead. Prescription drugs are paid up to 90% of the cost and 100% for pensioners. I have never spoken to anyone who would want to change to an American style system. (continued above

The great thing about the NHS is that it is free at the point of need. With so many people out of work in our countries, a lot of whom have worked hard all of their lives, its comforting that if they get sick they can still get world class health care.The NHS saved my life and has been there for me since day 1. Doctors make good money in our country, and obviously there is considerable status that goes with being a doctor. Plus some of them go into it because they actually care about people

I believe there is a profound difference in Wall Street and a Roulette Wheel. While the outcome may be the same sometimes, it is the act of investing that sets itself apart from just taking a chance.
An investment in a stock or corporation puts people to work fuels innovation, and provides jobs in the free market. You reap rewards in the end.
The goal is to diversify your investment with stocks, IRAs and Mutual Funds as well as savings bonds.

Well, I can't afford private-health insurance because I am a student. If I get ill I can go and see my doctor and get whatever treatment I need without worrying about payment. If you actually knew what you were talking about you would realise that the NHS is run much like any capitalist enterprise, just that the bosses are the government.Thatcher introduced something called CCT. This means that the NHS is obliged to contract out it's cleaning, portering, and catering services to the most competitive offer. This means the NHS runs internally on free-market principles.

So now we've established that the NHS is actually a competitor in the free-market simply by the fact that you can choose whether or not to use it. Now we shall go on to how it actually works. You pay for prescriptions. You pay for dental care. You pay for a wheelchair. You pay for glasses. The NHS is NOT a handout centre....hardly Socialist and certainly not commie. It is free at the point of use for those who need it but most of us will have to pay something at some point.

Yes, it was a Socialist invention and yes it is run on social welfare principles but that does NOT mean that it is a Socialist institution. Yes, our taxes go towards funding it but that is simply because almost every single UK individual will use it.. Whether they then decide to use an NHS hospital for further treatment or go private is thier choice. The NHS is a government-funded competitor in the free market.

I am sorry, but I disagree with some of the things you have said in this video. I live in the UK, and its unfair to say that our doctors are not as good when life expectancy and the health care system is one of the highest/best in the world. We still have private health care for those who want it/ can afford it, and if the NHS is such a terrible thing, then please tell me how it has lasted since 1947? Its good disputing about health care in your country, but don't slag off ours!

Thanks, I have. I think the author of this column has cherry picked cases (broadcast by right wing papers). It would have been good if she had written of all the lives saved, and how many people can attain great health care. Yes, there can be cases of negligence but from experience its due to 1 or 2 staff rather than the system. I don't trust info from a bias article using bias sources, when the author has most likely had no experience on said topic. I respect your opinion, but I disaprove ...

Yes, they are right wing papers. Yes, there are cases of mistreatment on the NHS. However I am not demonising any facts, I am simply stating things from personal experience and questioning the sources from which that article was based upon. I am not sure how it would work in the US, but I have not given up my "liberty and freedom" because I am on the NHS. If I wanted to, I could easily go private. I still have a choice. Now I thought that choice is a part of having freedom is it not?

You still have to pay for your national insurance despite using Bupa. You have no choice at all. That is not freedom. We already give up freedom in America with Social Security (a boondoggle). NHS may have some successes, but even a broken clock is right twice a day.
