Wow, the endless days & nights i spent in 1973 trying to copy this wonderful solo.
Amazing thought and imagination went into the solo..i loved the way he stated the melody and then broke away to add blues phrasing. Very Larry Carlton-ish. Tony seemed like a really good guy and life is is just so damn unfair.
i was surprised to just find out he died one year ago today why was it never mentioned well any way rip maybe it was his wish not to make a big deal about his death
@ThePearlofeire I still cannot understand why there was the delay in the original news even leaking out - ostensibly about a week after he actually died. But nobody seems to know for sure! Very strange for such an untimely death.Yet the greatest travesty on top of this tragedy, was the total omission of his name in that cacophonic In Memorium 'tribute' at the Grammys.
@ucfbtm I THINK have just found out that it was last year (2010) that he died(Am I right?)-so maybe because (1)he wasn,t that well known to a lot of people(2)it was probably mentioned only once on the news in 2010(3)the 70,s were before my time so his name wasn,t familiar to me which is a reason why I wouldn,t remember if his name was ever mentioned on the news and probably (4)I am not from the USA so maybe it wasn,t ever announced on my countrys news.
@ThePearlofeire Tony definitely died in 2010.If we beleive the concensus,it was on June 5th - but the news wasn't reported until a WEEK later.I've never heard of such a delay - and I can't believe he wasn't discovered for a week! An awful thought. Apparently Tony had become a significant producer,so he remained well known. But being the 'Third Voice" of the Carpenters is a massive legacy.Tony Peluso deserves a much better remembrance, but at least his music will live on,
Gosh, I'm really sad to learn (just now at that) of Tony's death a couple weeks ago :( While I can rejoice in his reuniting with Karen (as I firmly believe in that), it's just so sad to learn yet another great artist has left us.
Man oh man . . . I know we all die at some point but the older I get I just see so many of what I always considered the truly *great* musicians going before me, and it's really saddening to see these legacies die off like this. Hell, I'm tearing up as I type this :(
@thebakerman1 It was already a massive tragedy, that Tony went so young - at 61.But it somehow seemed much worse, that he wasn't even mentioned in the ever-worsening In Memoriam at The Grammys.(I was glued to the screen, trying to quickly pluck out the names from that dreadful cacophonic 3-way splt screen they did.But Tony wsn't there :(
@TheSami1973 Without question, there are barely a handful who qualify as the best female voice in creation - Billie,Ella,(I happen to think Doris Day,too). But Karen is not only in that ultra-rare group, but spans ALL genders with that voice.
@TheSami1973 I'm afraid so,yes :( Tony has gone far too soon,at only 60 - due to heart disease. Apparently,he actually passed on June 5th,but the news only seemed to get out on Sat 12th,and over Twitter on Sunday 12th.
The beauty of Tony's legacy is that he created it so young - so we got to enjoy it along with him for all those decades. And now he is making some great music again, reunited with Karen
Thank you soo much for this video. I was in another room at Track Record in 1996 when Tony gave this interview. I was assisting him on another project. He had so many stories you wouldn't believe. I just heard the news and I am deeply sadened. God bless you Tony.
@DJSmith575 My pleasure.I always feel it is vital to truly honour great musicians while they share the planet with us. Tony has gone?! What terribly sad news.I'm glad that you were there when Tony gave that interview. That will be a precious memory to cherish, along with the legacy of Tony's magical artistry. God Bless you Tony.
Doesn't matter about the quality of this piece. I'm just very glad to be able to see and hear it at all :)
Always great to see a piece of video about The Carpenters. To this day they're still my all-time favorite group (Bread too). It's always a treat to see something about them you've never seen before so this was really great. Very happy to see this :)
@thebakerman1 That's very kind of you.Thankyou very much.I agree with you, that any information is a gift - a bit of 'Floridian' wisdom there.(The music is obviously the key to this piece anyway).
Good call on David Gates, too - another very rare voice, used as a beautiful instrument
Her voice is sent from above. Unique and at 37 althought I don't remember her when she was alive I do miss her voice. Love it. Loved it in my teens discovering my parents lp collection and love it ever since. She's unique and so sad she isn't here to share more of that beautiful voice ofcourse accompanied by her very talented brother because their sound is because of him. RIP Karen and Richard you are very talented. xxx
If we believe the Olympics,we'd be thinking that Sarah Maclachlan wrote "Building a Mystery".But she is one of the rare female vocalists. But as far as legends go,we need to celebrate Doris Day still being alive.(Doris' singing career was totally overlooked)/
I was in high school when the Carpenters cut this song. I remember it making people stop and take notice. It seemed like a perfect blend of musicianship, i.e. Peluso's spell casting notes on that hollow body electric, Richard Carpenters arrangement, and of course, Karen Carpenters rare voice!
What a great memory! Thankyou for sharing - it's always lovely to know how the actual experience was at the time. Yes,this is also my Carpenters favourite - and indeed it's also a standalone classic.
I'll take it even further ucfbtm. This guitar solo alone had fans of Chicago, CCR, The Beatles, you name it going "Okay, we all know that's Karen Carpente's voice, but who in the world's doing that solo?"
Thanks for posting this interview with Mr. Peluso, he deserves the credit!
That's why it was a typically genius move by Richard to hire Tony - and let him have free rein. That's wonderful to know how highly regarded it was at the time. Many thanks for your input
Good point - well said, that man. They should play that record uninterrupted until the needle makes it all the way to the end of the groove and starts scratching the label! :) (I knew vinyl would come back into fashion :D )
Another unique solo is Jeff Becks on Hi Ho silver lining. The solo put the song into the shade. Although JB still plays it in concert he hated the song, even so it made him popular with the masses. It's my second favourite solo after goodbye to love.
CD was always over-hyped - just as any new thing is.I was never prepared to start knocking vinyl, which is why i never got rid of any,(and why I can still play it all today!) Hearing Tony play the DJ on the full-length album version of 'Calling Occupants" is part of another sensation.
It is the best guitair sole ever and Fantastic live, but it wasnt Tony's idea it was Richard Carpenter's - a true genius musically - right up there with Brian Wilson in my book.
Yes, a true genius right up there with Brian Wilson. And, grossly underated for his genius at the time. Goodbye to Love is the Carpenter's greatest performance for so many reasons. Could Tony Peluso be any cooler?
ucfbtm. The whole concept (for the time) was original and very brave considering the 'nicey' cabaret status of the Carps. It paid off in bucket loads and led the way for power ballads. I remember all the axe players I know saying. 'bloody hell have you heard this'? They won a lot of extra fans that week of release.
Oh,of course. There is no doubt about that! That studio version is precisely what makes it legendary. But I was so impressed by how tony managed to capture such a faithful live version, but also here we get that hint of Karen's scat singing along to it! PRICELESS
ucfbtm. Agree all the way. Can't knock it, I just meant more 'gutsy' sound on studio recording as I run one. Probably best spine tingling guitar sound I ever heard. That lovely clicky scratchy pic overtone is awesome. Still blows a lot of modern stuff out of the water. Respect !!
ucfbtm - thanks very very much for this. Great song, one of the very best guitar solos ever. If you have any more of this, we would love to see it. God bless, Jim.
What a great find! Tony Peluso's guitar solo in "Goodbye to Love" is a real eye-catcher & ear-catcher, and I wanted to find out more about it. This video is terrific. Thanks.
