is it better to use the silicon or epoxy. Can I use UHU glue to glue the aluminum to gether and will it withstand the heat from the candle. For birthday candle that you used can I use tea light candle .
@Raymond37733 If you have a very good engine and there is no wind, a tea candle can work, but it's slower. I used to use epoxy, then silicone for leaks, but now I just use epoxy.
I have written to you before on how to make put put boat.
I have tried making the motor/engine.I have followed what you have mentioned using the pattern and tape it on to the outer part of the aluminum and cut as shown .I also sand paper the inner side of the aluminum as per the instruction.
I always get a leak either at the end part or in the middle.
How long do you let the epoxy to set before going to to remove the straw.
I cannot have an arch like what in your illustration
@Raymond37733 It's difficult to tell without seeing. Different epoxies have different set times. 5 minute epoxy is very strong in 15 minutes. Other epoxy takes a day to set.
If you have leaks in the engine, you can fix them with epoxy as long as the candle flame does not touch that part.
I need more information about the arch to understand what is happening.
im going to use leak-fix made by plastic padding its for sealing cracks on car engines so its heat resident as well as waterproof and sticks well to metal. ill post back later if it works
@157ghsrty it works, i had a small leak between the straws but this was sealed with the glue gun when fixing the straws at the right angle. this leak-fix is more of a paste and go's hard very quickly so dont put to much hardener in the mix. its not runny like apoxy so its hard to get it in between the folds so i did'nt bother, i coated the hole side and it sealed first time.
@sciencetoymaker i tried jb weld but it didnt work the first time but i added more and waited over night and it worked that tiiime. thanks for the epic vids now i can show my cousins and show them how to make one. :)
@oldfacefull Super glue seems to work for gluing things together but not sealing, which is just as important. Super glue and silicone sealant might work.
@sciencetoymaker nah it didn't work. but i found an even better thing...I just cut two pieces of aluminum identical to each other and j-b welded them togather one flat and the other somewhat bowed. still setting up though, i'll tell you how it works.
@airliners321 Not on this part, it gets too hot. The hot glue would just melt. I urge people to follow directions the first time exactly. Try variations after.
@zdanz25 Solder is used on the Indian engines, but they are using brass and steel, not aluminum. You have to use a special kind of solder for aluminum. I don't see it sold at hardware stores. I've heard it contains cadmium, which is very toxic. Then you would still have to the coating on the aluminum cans.
@firedude201234 Well, if you were using it in a cardboard box it wouldn't be good. It smells bad--and I wouldn't use it on food-contact surfaces--but epoxy is less toxic than solvent glues, fingernail polish, paints, hair spray, etc.
@sciencetoymaker While not being an expert on epoxy, I have always been taught that skin contact is very unhealthy. I wish you would recommend the use of gloves, especially as the video is directed at young people.
@anorup Well, the package says it is a skin irritant. I have not read that any of it passes through the skin into the bloodstream the way some volatile solvents do. Thin gloves are disposable. That would be 3 pairs per student, times 200: 600 pairs of gloves. We do wash it off our hands. When I revise the instructions I can urge more caution when using epoxy.
@Libed24 At the beginning of the instructions I asked people to follow the directions exactly the first time. That means use epoxy the first time, then experiment. Write down the word "epoxy" and take it to the hardware store with you. You should be able to get it even in the Philippines.
My guess is that PVC cement is solvent with a bit of pvc dissolved in to thicken it. When dry you only have pvc, which melts. Not a good glue for a hot engine.
okay. so i've built the entire engine and boat, and i got it to go around and around my bath tub. but- the candle has to be super close to the aluminum engine, and it takes maybe three or four minutes to start up the engine after the candle is lit. any suggestions?
@peanutmaster1231 Oh, that! I forgot it was there. I was trying to get people to stop and complete the step before they forgot the details, in way that would make them laugh. I stopped doing it I think in all the videos after that. Now I use a page turn transition and sound, as in the recent origami hang glider project. I'll remove my other comment. I thought you were insulting my regular voice. Guess I'm a little oversensitive...and forgetful.
@peanutmaster1231 If you get super glue into the folds of metal, it holds the shape. The problem is that thin super glue leaks, and the engine won't work with even a pinhole leak. Somebody said they had a kind of gel super glue that did work.
I encourage people to follow instructions exactly for the first engine. I don't like epoxy glue either, but it's available in any hardware store, waterproof, fairly heatproof, and fills leaks.
@sciencetoymaker okay. thanks! i did find it at my local hardware store. i absolutely hate the stuff, but if it will make it work, then im happy. my friends bet me that i couldnt make a working self propelled boat out of trash. haha im gonna show them...
@peanutmaster1231 I know this is frustrating for people to hear, but virtually everybody has to make a second engine before they get it to work. And all I can say is, yes it's a lot of work but it's worth it. Like you said, how many of your friends have built their own engine? Keep plugging away. Let me know how it goes.
@sciencetoymaker i know, i already tried to build one. ^.^ i didnt pay enough attention to the video so i used super glue... it didnt work and i was wondering if that was the problem.

Dear Sir,
What brand do you recommend to use for the epoxy.I am using Araldite by Huntsman and it is made in Belgium.
Here in Malaysia our DIY shop does do have the wide variety of epoxy like in your country,by the way are you from USA.
Recently I was in Berlin germany I saw a put put boat and I bought it for my grandson to play.
How to avoid leaks as it takes me hours to make a motor and keep on trying to correct the leak..How to have an arch
Please advise.
Thanks & regards
