I love this piece. Its very beautiful and emotional. I played this with the Alaska all state band under the direction of a personal friend of the composer. I play oboe, and it gave me chills from beginning to end.
SJCMEA Honor Band :D We played this last night and it was beautiful... I had the great honor of playing the flute solo and I also thought the french horn soloist did a great job :) My best musical experience so far!
This is my favorite song in the entire world, I listened to it live and cried. It is so beautiful, and now I am even more excited because I get to play the flute solo:)
My band teacher is actually Lyndsay Boysen(: she's a wonderful lady and she plays the flute, which explains the flute solo he added! she's an excellent band teacher and definately deserved this! :D
@queenrandine83 No way! I had the privilege of working with Andrew on this piece for Iowa All-State band camp. Just a whole week of being conducted by him. He's a cool cat.
@isudude0913 I'm at Wartburg College, playing in the symphonic band, and we just got to work with him last night. He really bares his soul in his music. when he conducted us through it, I broke out in a sweat and chills when we hit the triple fff. Amazing man.
@reidcook59 I'm in a crappy high school band and that still happens xD. This song is beautiful. I have second alto part, which creates tension with a ninth (i believe) and then resolves. It's so beautiful.
Andrew Boysen Jr. may be one of the best modern composers we have. the amount of emotion put into the writing of this song is amazing. Getting to watch him direct this piece really make me connect to the piece
I also played this at the CCU honor band with Andrew Boysen Jr directing. It's an amazing piece and its probably my favorite piece to listen to that we played.
I just went and saw this in live concert. I don't say this lightly: This is truly the most beautiful peice of music I've ever heard. I've linstened to so many pieces of music over the years, but this one... I get goosebumps a lot when I listen to music, but it takes a lot of emotion to make me start crying. This piece did that to me... Truly amazing....
I'm at a CCU Honor Band clinic where Andrew Boysen Jr is directing. He's having us play this piece and it's absolutely gorgeous. It's written for his wife
I played this for a state honors program in brisbane, (as a percusionist)
it was absolutely beautiful and even now when i listen to the song i can feel the emotion that the french horn and flute players had then. ill never forget how great it was to have played with them
The man who composed this is simply amazing. You can tell he put great emotion into this piece, and wrote every single note with a purpose. It's soothing music like this that I love, music with meaning. <3
Gives me chills. Plain and simple. I played in my all-county band and we played this, and we did not give it enough justice... I actually felt like I was doing something wrong while playing it. I was ashamed of the performance. I wish I could play it again in band to recapture its beauty.
My high school Contest Band is playing this song, along with Call of the Mountain, Adelina de Maya, and Joy. Song for Lyndsay is my favorite that we are playing. It's a truly amazing piece.
A close family friend just passed away from a car accident. She was riding her bike and she got hit by a car. Our band played this in the past year and it didn't have much meaning to me until the death of my friend. Her name was Lyndsay. Now, whenever I hear this it brings so much more emotion to me. RIP Lyndsay, you will never be forgotten :(
i played this song on the marimba for my bands spring concert. Beforehand, one of our great directors gave a sad goodbye speech to everyone in the audience. Only seconds into the french horn solo, my eyes and cheeks were being flooded with tears bc of the way this magnificent song sounds and because of who we were all saying goodbye and good luck to. it was so hard not to choke up.. especially at 3:43. truely the best concert piece i have play yet. Thank you Boysen for creating this work of art.
One of our Bari Sax players passed away at the beginning of this year. I am the first chair horn player in my band and am honored tonplay this in his memory.
I love Andrew Boysen jr. Hes one of my favorite composers. Our school commissioned one of his new pieces titled Bells! Its great! Has a horn candenza in the middle of the piece that i played and we got the chance to meet him in person and conduct the piece.. Hes an amazing guy
this is such an amazing song..... Andrew is my all time favorite composer I love playing what he writes he knows how to capture a simple memory in time...
im in High school and the band that im in is playing this song...i honestly love this song, everytime it ends with the piano theres total silence in the band room...LOVE IT..thanks for posting
@JazzyPick I was 3rd Chair saxophone so you were probably sitting right in front of me! haha. Dr. Stamp was amazing. I love how he took money from the trumpets hahaha.
A dear friend of mine passed away last November and this was his favorite song. I could do nothing but cry as his high school band (which he was a member of) played it at his funeral. I'm still crying now. It feels like it was yesterday when I got the text that he passed. He was like a little brother to me. In his honor, my friends and I named our band "Song for Lyndsay" in honor of him. RIP Chris. I loved you so much... <3
The Hendrickson Hawk Band played this song just like how it sounds. This song is so beautiful. The had this song as second movement in our show ILLUMINATUS. Check out our performance>
I love this piece... A friend of mine and my older brother had passed away this passed November... He was in the band in my old high school and my brother along with the band played this song at his funeral in memory of him. It was his favorite piece. I fell in love with this. It's beautiful.
@theflamingmoon i played the contra bass for the gold band. i say your conductor picked better pieces. im not saying that i didnt like mine i just think you guys had better ones.
You know...I played this horn solo this past school year for the ccsd honor band(video on youtube), and I have to say....alot of my friends cried when they heard this song from the audience...I came to listen to this video from an audience standpoint, and I still don't feel any sort of emotions when I listen to it. I think one day in the future I need to hear a band play it live. Maybe I'll get it then. :) It is SUCH a beautiful piece.
I was in the first band ever to perform this piece live at it's debut during the 2007 Kansas Music Educators Association Performance. It was a privilege and I must say it is a beautiful song.
When my band played this at state qualifyer we made the judges cry. such a great moving piece! i love it! if you don't know the story behind the song look it up it will make the whole song come to life.
I got to play this last year in my wind ensemble as principal euphonium. To this day I cry whenever I hear it. The day before we performed the piece, a very dear friend of the band, and a fellow classmate, took his own life. The ensemble was barely able to finish the performance, and there wasn't a dry eye in the auditorium. I still consider that concert to be the single most moving experience in my life. Thank you for posting such a beautiful recording of this song.
i think the it shoutld slow down at the 5/4 it should be much slower then that and the winds like flutes need to come out a bit more i think its to bottem heavy needs more higher playing insterments
this is a really nice song. I am playing this in band at the moment. We are really close to getting it this good. :) I love Band! and I love this song!
great song, played it for state, did so well with this song that we made state in colorado!! great piano parts and great horn and flute solo, if you guys dont know the story behind this, the guy who wrote this actualy wrote it for his wife, and when you listen, he is the horn sounds, while Lynsday (his wife) is the flute sounds, and if you notice that the two sounds are seprate to start, the flirt together in the middle and in the end, finally come together for a wonderful duet, perfect song
@Nwilcox334 That's not what Dr. Boysen told us earlier today. he said it was originally a piano piece that was later expanded for, and I love this part, the Indiana University of Pennsylvania.....but the rest was true........
We are playing this piece for district festival... our band director is not the type to get emotional but he says he always wants to cry when he hears us playing our hearts out on this song... i love t!!!!!
Ahh! I remember playing this song last year for band. I couldn't remember what the title was, but I recognized it as soon as it started! It's my favourite piece we've played. <3
@Universlmusician I was at that honor band concert on the 23rd supporting my fellow pvhs band people(: your solo was amazing. You guys did a really great job playing this. It was beautiful(:
yeahh. i totally agree. i think the marimbas sound alright. i think the low keys on the piano should be replaced with a harp, but the higher keys sound alright...
but i know what you mean. it would be more peaceful --for lack of a better word-- at the beginning.
yeaa i was in that band too. they played it so beautifully the principal horn was from my school. never thought of putting a harp sound but it would sound cool. what'd you play?
heyy i was a trombone player too haha i was the last chair tho on the bass bone parts :\ haha and yea he shoulda just had the harp player actually play the harp instead of the piano..oh well
We're playing this piece for Senior districts. Andrew Boysen is our conductor and he's awesome. A great guy. I love this song. He told us the story and that he wrote it for his wife and not every time I listen to it moves me close to tears.
My high school band is playing this for an upcoming music festival. It is just tremendous. It gets you in just the right way every time. It is such a nostalgic sound... and I always think it is melancholy until the very end. Everything is so well written in this song, I could be happy to play any part...
But all I can really say is thank goodness I am a horn player! This song is just... horn heaven.
i wish we performed this for the tmea 5A symphonic band :( i love this piece!!! its beautiful, just like my girl friend :)

great song, played it for state, did so well with this song that we made state in colorado!! great piano parts and great horn and flute solo, if you guys dont know the story behind this, the guy who wrote this actualy wrote it for his wife, and when you listen, he is the horn sounds, while Lynsday (his wife) is the flute sounds, and if you notice that the two sounds are seprate to start, the flirt together in the middle and in the end, finally come together for a wonderful duet, perfect song

@Nwilcox334 That's not what Dr. Boysen told us earlier today. he said it was originally a piano piece that was later expanded for, and I love this part, the Indiana University of Pennsylvania.....but the rest was true........

As much as I like to raz my flute-playing roommate (I'm a sax/piano player), the brief flute solo in this song is gorgeous.

We just performed this with the MA southeast district band...Boyson conducted it...I got chills EVERY time we played it
Does anyone else agree a harp would sound better than the piano though?? Or replace the marimbas with a harp
nrwriter 2 years ago
yeahh. i totally agree. i think the marimbas sound alright. i think the low keys on the piano should be replaced with a harp, but the higher keys sound alright...
but i know what you mean. it would be more peaceful --for lack of a better word-- at the beginning.
xLilPceOfHeavenx 2 years ago
yeaa i was in that band too. they played it so beautifully the principal horn was from my school. never thought of putting a harp sound but it would sound cool. what'd you play?
babbs302 2 years ago
trombone :)
yea she was really good
and i cant tell you how strongly i feel about the harp...it would sound so much better lol
nrwriter 2 years ago
heyy i was a trombone player too haha i was the last chair tho on the bass bone parts :\ haha and yea he shoulda just had the harp player actually play the harp instead of the piano..oh well

Such a great piece... it has great parts to it. I love when the flute has a solo and they do that one note trill.
