No, you sure don't. I used the 55 gallon container because it was available and inexpensive. The amount of diversion you need is dependent on the size and condition of your roof. The 55 gallon container allows for flexibility in that if you are not sure how much diversion you need you have the ability to just move the slow drain output faucet down on the barrel, thereby allowing more water to run off of the roof before it goes to storage.
Do you need a 55 gal. container for this? It seems like you could just use a 15 gal. container since that's all you're using of the larger container.
