  • Joss Stone is a kind, lovely, down to Earth British Woman. After 2 years of living in HGK with the Brit Expat community, I, a dreadlocked, black American acquired a bit of a Cockney accent. This talented young lady spent yrs working with Musos and of course she'd borrow Americanisms from some of the coolest people she'd ever met. I worked with people like Chaka Khan, Jeff Healy, Mr John Lee Hooker and Joss. Joss is a good person and a very talented British woman. Be happy for her success.

  • How embarrassing.

  • it's not so much the accent (whichever it's supposed to be) that's cringey so much as her attempt at doing her own little nonsensical stand up routine.

  • half British, half American, complete diva.

  • there's wannabees and true talent; Winehouse is the talent, period. Vocal gymnasts like stone are better of in the states, there are more 13 year old girls.........

  • Her "jokes" were pretty weak, but I don't see what the big deal is about her accent... Sounded British to me. It's not like she Changed her accent over night like that pretentious bitch madonna.

  • Wow that really ruined her career in Europe. Thats why she more or less lives in US now

  • cringe and cunt seem to be the two words flashing here.

  • dumbasses - have they never noticed she sings in an American accent? as do a lot of British singers - Elton John being one.

  • I am not trying to be ignorant but why do Brits obsess over accents so much. This woman was literally grilled by her country over something like this, she had not done anything wrong and she was treated as the worse Brit that year.

In America you would have to be a train wreck like Linsday Lohan in order for people to truly dislike you.

Joss comes across as a nice girl and she was treated like some trailer trash celeb.

  • @delirous8

Because in Britain our musical artists have this notion that they must "crack" the US. Obviously because the US has the largest single media industry, which = £££'s. So to crack the US media means they have pretty much cracked the world.

Now, the British public are sick of our Artists doing the bare minimum here, then fucking off to the US as though they've outgrown us or we're not good enough for them. Coming back with with a new accent was probably an additional kick in the teeth.

  • @levijonessheep she said she has lived in America since she was 16 and when you live somewhere for a period of time you are going to adapt their speech patterns and lose your accent somewhat.

  • @delirous8 Really well how come if you listen to her voice now she sounds very British. She was full of herself, walking up and down the stage. She was only there to read out the winner. She is a stupid bitch and nobody in the UK likes her

  • The only reason anyone ever gave a shit is that they wanted to imagine "the shires" as a mythical land in which the rules of modern capitalism - their *own* rules, of course - do not apply. Had Stone come from Essex, Kent or Hertfordshire, nobody would have thought anything of it. Those of us who actually live in the shires of course see "Portland Boiz - rep ya endz" graffiti every day, so we didn't think anything of it either.

  • @bubes00 you were doing well until you overlooked the fact there are various Scottish, Welsh and Irish accents. I'm Scottish but I don't have a "Groundskeeper Willie" accent.

  • Cringe!!!

  • Who the fuck gives a shit about Joss Stone?

  • AWFUL AWFUL AND VERY CRINGEWORTHY!

  • Talks like Jedward...

  • She doesn't sound British, but not fully American. British with an American twang

  • @35TCK - you? You're the one looking it up.

    ...

She sounds halfway between American and English. Americans won't hear it because all they will hear is the English. The English won't hear it because all that stands out is the American-ness. That's why American actresses think they can "do" English accents and wonder why they're slated.

BTW there is not such thing as a "British" accent. How can you lump N Irish, Scots, Welsh and the various English accents in together?

  • @bubes00 You're fucking right mate. Jocks have none to do with the accent of the Fog.

  • What a fucking moron she turned into. Shame.

  • i really dont hear an american accent....

  • She definitely sounds British.

  • She sounds like a Brit who's just arrived from America. Funnily enough, it seems like America love her so much more than what the Brits do now.

  • That sounded pretty British to me. That wasnt an American accent.

  • @MrLosknor Believe me , to us Brits that sounded very American

  • @MrLosknor She sort of drifted between the two.

  • Ok I'm brazilian and i don't see any problem with this!! What stupid and who cares about that? She isn't more talented or less talented if she talks in a american accent or whatever damn accent. This is called xenophobia and just brings more hate to the world... Joss talks about love and peace in her musics so if you really like her just listen to them and shut the fuck up!!

  • Umm, where is the American accent? I'm American and except for the tint twang she has when she says "Hey, how's it going" I don't really hear it. She sounds pretty British to me. Sorry Brits, but you have no idea what an American accent sounds like.

  • I'd give her one!

  • wow i cant believe she did that..... she's so horroble... Actually i am kidding she did nothing here...

  • Its not just the accent that makes me slit my wrists its the garbage that comes out of her mouth, I mean what the fuck is she talking about !!

  • haha - brilliant. even after all this time this still makes me cringe

  • what a total idiot she is.

  • Not even American HAHA! People are complete and utter idiots if they think this is American...I'm not american...and I can bloody well tell. She has the SLIGHTEST twang in certain words..that is all. This is something that people still bring up...she DOESN'T CARE!! She's a fantastic soul singer, with an amazing voice...she's far too underrated.

  • seriously as an american...this does not sound like an american accent to me. at all. people are delusional. Plus sometimes when people live in a place with another accent for awhile sometimes they pick it up a little without realizing it. I really think people overreacted to this.

  • @josieme I remember after this event the British media showed their inferiority complexes on how they treated her. They framed her as this British girl who betrayed her country because she has a little American twang.

Chewed up and spit out and Joss has hard time redeeming her image since then in the UK.

  • She doesn't sound American at all. Whoever says that is deaf.

  • very cringeworthy

  • She has a wonderful voice, who cares about her accent??!!.The last one album LP1 is amazing. If you live in Australia or England, South Africa, Canada, New Zeland, USA, Jamaica, or SOLOMON ISLANDS!!!!, but if you have talent, the accent is irrelevant. Finger up if you agree!!

  • I was there and I wasn't paying attention but looked up from my conversation because I could feel my ears popping as the whole place lost cabin pressure, I think it was from 11,000 people all drawing in breath at the same time. WHAT. IS. WRONG. WITH. JOSS. STONE. You can even tell from this video that it went VERY BADLY.

Speaking of nobodies, who on earth is James Morrison?!

  • This stupid cow is sooo far up her own backside its untrue! Great voice though, ruined by such a boring personality!

  • There is no doubt her career in the Uk went downhill after this - for whatever reason .. Colour Me free UK #75 and LP1 UK# 36 .

  • i'm not affected at all by this and i'm lucky for feeling that because then i could enjoy her music without being affected by such small trivial things. SMH.

  • Actually, I think she's a seriously talented singer and will probably be around for years to come, unlike Shhhh you know who, but I'm not so sure why!

I also rated her role in The Tudors, which I thought was great, she can definitely "do," accents, though God knows why she felt she had to do "American," after spending a short while out there!

  • also, i don't see how her accent affects anyone. how is it even remotely important?

  • i don't understand what everyone's problem is with joss? can someone please explain?

  • dude....who gives a fuck? i looked this up cause i love hearing british people doing american accents cause i think its funny. by no means is this going to "ruin her career." and if it did, it just shows everyone's lack of intelligence. joss stone is famous for her musical talent, not how she speaks so if people seriously think this is gonna wreck her career, then you don't appreciate music. shes lived in the us for so long, she's probably just picking it up. get over it people.

  • Lol. Awful.

  • i wish the cops hadn't have found my plans. we'd be rid of this bitch by now.

  • So what's the big deal about this whole thing? She's been travelling to America since she was a little girl & she doesn't sound american at all... so please, stop makin' negative comments, if you don't like you don't watch...THAT SIMPLE!

  • The accent just highlighted the massive bellend she is

  • I hear a twang, but it isn't as bad as Nadine's 'accent' though!

Also, what happened to James Morrison, no one's read from/of him in years?!

  • That doesn't sound American to my ears, but then again it doesn't sound British either. I think she was hanging around her American boyfriend alot, that's all.

  • . . . Umm. . . who actually gives a fuck here?

  • This cunt is such an annoyance.

  • @OakPark11MileRd I never said she didnt have a good voice, I said she isnt mega famous. Joss Stone isnt bigger than england or a superstar

  • @OakPark11MileRd So just becasue you have grammys does not mean you are well known. Please ok, I like Joss Stone but she is not really known tha well at all. She is a C list celeb and many know of her, but would have trouble mentioning two of her songs. She is a good singer, but please, she isnt known that well at all.

  • @OakPark11MileRd Anastacia sold double that in 5 years, but you wouldnt say she is a superstar either

  • @OakPark11MileRd i like joss stone, but you are deluded in saying she is some kind of superstar because she is a c list celeb at most

  • Great legs... but one vacuous, inane tool.

  • And now that "shopping list" makes sense.

  • fail

  • hmm... i actually couldnt hear anything american about it. sounded brit to me.

  • is she on coke?

  • how can people hate her for this? she is amazing and a wonderfully nice person

  • @soccerstud32095 It appears some of the people in England are petty, foolish little people. This is the first time I've listened to her so-called American accent on this show... WHAT AMERICAN ACCENT? I'm American and she is clearly speaking a whole bunch of the King's English. Or is that the Queen's English these days? Petty little buggers those critics.

  • Annoying. I would though.

  • with joss stone being in the news lately i wondered back to why i hated her so much..THIS WAS IT..what a fucking silly cow..shes from fucking devon not the usa...very embarrassing and what a way to fuck your career over...

  • he's stroooong.

  • people are tripping. this is an english accent to me.

  • that is most def not an american accent

  • Lol, that's bad, aha :P

  • this is what Cheryl Cole should of done haha

  • Ugh, she is annoying.

  • They'd have shown this in court and the judge would've let the two guys off and said 'fair play'. I sentence her death.

  • She has tried to adopt a fowl American accent but it sounds plain shit

  • shes hot. whatever.

  • I think this is the start of her american accent as you can her a hint of american in it, and now she has a full on american accent x

  • I'm sick of hearing "American Accent" every time somebody talks like an uneducated California teenager.

  • @RCTPatriot75 oh yea, california isn't in america...silly us.... besides the "hey, hows it goin?" sounds much more southern, right?

  • terrible

  • what a stupid cow

  • @Pmonty3 I think of her more as a stupid, boring, White Stripes classic ruining cunt.

  • james morrison is a giant douche.

  • LOL if she came to any state or city in america people would pick up she's british. Her r's and t's give it away.

  • haha im English and the only part of that which sounds American is the the first sentence she says, after that just sounds like an English person who has been living in the states - which she has. who cares what she talks like. crap joke though!

  • @MattG3128 She was living in the states for a very small amount of time, much too soon to have noticiable phonation change

  • I hated when she dyed her hair purple, ruined it. And as for the american accent...i don't really hear it...but she shouldn't do stand up...ever.

  • I can completely see the awkwardness in this and yes, I did cringe. But I've also watched a lot of interviews with Joss and she's always been a very genuine, insightful, lovely girl, up until the most recent footage I can find. I think she was just nervous and wasn't used to presenting. Not everyone can try to entertain in that way by making a joke and not come off out of place and ridiculous. Leave the girl alone and find something better to do with your time.

  • It sounds like some forced southern/soul kind of accent. I don't know how to describe it. I'm half American half British and have kind of a mixed accent.... damn I hope I don't sound like that.

  • I swear she looks (from what i've seen of others) like she is on cocaine...People on cocaine always do stupid stuff like that that isn't funny but they think it is hilarious....That was Brit Awards 2007 and she hadnt released a good song for 2 years before that so she needs to go away, y'knaw what i'm saying sista?!

  • Not an American Accent. And damn, she has long legs.

  • She walks like a New Orleans prostitute

  • That is NOT an American Accent

that sounds like some funky British Accent to me

  • It ain't American just pissin annoyin

  • James Morrison is yet another who puts on an American accent when he sings. Yawn.

  • Who the hell does she think she is? I think she spent too long in America with fake people telling her how great she is.

Repulsive, England disowned her for being a fake. fucking stupid cunt.

  • Comment removed

  • There's a plus side to everything - it destroyed her career.

  • She's just fucking annoying. No matter what accent she's doing.

She should just not speak all together.

  • even years down the line this is so embarrassing.

  • Stupid Cunt she is.

  • Yes, I 'm sure she's now as embarrassed as we are - but isn't it nice to be gifted with Hindsight - a quality that's isn't exactly rare with most of us.

But give the girl a break, she a living dichotomy: - she's young, white , middle class unmarried and still a ting bit wet-behind the ears -------- whilst on stage she sound like / makes her music from -----people who sound like they are --- Fully-Formed Black , poor , married with a drunk hubbie who gave her 3 kids & knows shes in-a-hole.

  • @noelpne Sorry she dose not sound black!!!

drunk hubbie, 3 kids, in a hole.

Wow all that from this video!!!!

Any problem at home? I wonder! LOL

  • second hand embarassment

  • That's not an American accent...

  • Big love

  • The biggest crime in this video is James Morrison being given an award for his music.

  • Comment removed

  • Shes trying to put on an American accent but failing, she actually sounds a bit Australian

  • i think it was all an act.

if you put together what she is talking about and how she moves around the stage and all that cockyness it just sounds better with an american accent.

  • She's talking a load of crap anyway - in any accent!

  • How funny that people are busy arguing in this virtual world about a girl's "accent" who is probably right now making a new record, living her real life out there making money or even preparing speech for Grammy award?? well at the end of the day, I don't think she even cares.

  • Pretty embarrassing! It's so obvious that isn't how she usually sounds, and is using an American accent - she's English and everyone knows she is English, so what you playing at dear?

  • She sounds english

  • First time I saw this I wasn't even aware she was attempting an American accent. I just thought she was a bit tipsy, though looking back I realize that the accent theory is more plausible XD

  • who gives a fuck the girl can sing!!!!!

  • it's not even the accent that's the worst thing, its the whole fake swagger

  • how one moment can wreck a career...

  • @oxygenineed & she ain't destroyed... she's great, & she doesn't sound american to me...& if she sounded like that, what's the problem?

  • @KareemAT89 I know she's not destroyed...she is talented to death! It's just public perception...(I didn't say she sounded american)

  • this is not an american accent by any means

  • @Juberoos no american accent i've ever heard, i've heard stronger accents in Boston, New York, the South and in Minnesota. She could pass for a Californian girl if it weren't for the Fact she still sounds British lol.

  • ummm im American and i dont hear no damn american accent..she still sounds british...wtf yall talking about?

  • @JL0vely im american and she sounds like an english attemptin an american accent and its not working quite well haha u can tell shes trying to sound american but to us she sounds english but to english people she sounds american lol

  • @mongrelmob100 She isn't putting on this accent, she lived in brittain until she was 15 then she moved to america and she has been there for 7+ years now, ofcourse she is going to pick up an accent lol.

And you hate joss stone? lol that's a strong word "hate" you don't like her but i doubt you hate her, don't know how you can hate someone you never met moron.

  • lol this is great

  • I'm so glad this is on here, I thought I'd dreamt it.

  • Listen guys. Yes she's originally from england, but she moved to america and some people are more septable to getting an accent. There is no limit to how far someone can be effected by their surroundings and just because she has a slight accent doesnt mean that she's putting it on, or fake. It might of just happened. I have a friend who lived in england for 15 years and in america for 1 and she already has quiet a strong american accent because she is surrounded by it day to day.

  • Oh god. How bad.

  • In Russel Brands Comedy Standup He Spoke About This And He Was Like "Joss Stone Came Out With 50 Different Accents, None Ov Them Hers" Haha!

  • This is a person coked up, for sure - no doubt whatsoever!

  • She hasn't murdered anyone.

  • Is she on coke?

  • if you say "through"... "froo" its not an American accent

  • What the fuck lmao

  • :P she sounds like a black girl from the south, ahaha. So bizarre.

  • Oh my god. This makes me physically recoil in horror. Lol at the lack of reaction from the audience when she attempts to make a funny about Russell Brand!

  • she didn't sound american

    im 12 wtf is this?

  • Controversy? Wtf? Do people have any idea how easy it is to lose accents? I went to Manchester for two weeks and when I came back to London I had people telling me I was saying "car" really weird, so living in the States would probably have an even bigger impact on me... something like this. ^

  • There's been so much cross cultural referencing in music over the last 5 decades, the idea that white people, or black people can re-produce sounds/vocal styles that were possibly limited to each group at one time, is nothing new, the Stones were doing it way back in the 60s..hurrah to that, I say.

But I don't recall Jagger ever affecting an American accent..

I believe she's moved on from this now?

  • "hey" "howz it goiiiing" "big love to hiym" "inspiiiiiriiing" "ah ah" silly witch check your birth certificate and passport. you only went to america for a few weeks.... good job it wasent Korea!

  • I was in the audience, and it was the weirdest thing, I was talking to someone, not paying attention to the weak bullshit on stage, but there was this ear-popping, we-just-lost-cabin-pressure feeling in the arena, I stopped in mid-sentence and looked up, like, what just happened? It was cos everyone (who was paying attention) all sucked in their breath at once. Oh my god Joss Stone (a horrible nightmarish creature at the very best of times) is talking Mercan! Aaargh fuck.

  • Still makes me Cringe.

  • Why does everyone always give fucking "love" to Robbie Williams. He's just the fat dancer from take that, a fucking idiot.

  • This ended Joss Stone's career.

  • Ohh... what an awful dress :S

  • talentless hack, she sings with an american accent, might as well start talking with one, too.

  • @patchworkfuckface People don't seem to sing with an accent...or it's pretty uncommon when you notice it in a song.

  • @femmefatale1990 ...... what?

  • @patchworkfuckface lol what isn't there to understand about that? you can't hear an accent when people sing. I had no idea that the singer from "Florence and the Machine" was English when I, first, heard her.

  • @femmefatale1990 lol. i understood. it was just a bit of a stupid thing to say. tim burton's sweeney todd is a good example. johnny depp sings with a fake londoner's accent, like joss stone singing with a midwest wank accent. country music is absolutely dominated by southern american accents. daniel johns sounds unmistakably australian. the guy from arctic monkeys sounds english, as does the guy from blur / the gorillas. you can always hear an accent.

  • @femmefatale1990 You can actually hear an accent. Not with a lot of words that you sing, but stuff like 'love' are pronounced differently, or words with 'r's in them, you curl them (if you know what I mean) if you're American or trying to be American. There's no such thing as no accent.

  • watched to whole vid waiting for the supposed american accent. never happened.

  • woooo james:D

  • seriously embarressing!

  • She sounds like an Englishwoman doing an Alicia Keys impersonation.

(I'm from Pennsylvania, and speak the most regionally-accentless American English, for background into my perspective.)

  • what a dick

  • think she's been around too many american soul singers in recent years

anyway i can't complain as long as she continues to make great musci

  • just her attitude on the stage and her voice............. eurgh haha
