I'd hate to play the shirtless guy. Classic pusher. BUT the fact of the matter is that he still gets the ball over and he still wins points so it's still tennis, just really boring and frustrating tennis
Guy with shirt has good groundies, but does not seem 4.5 to me. He has no strategy (or sticks to a losing strategy) no variation of his shots. Bad net game, no placement of his overhead whatsoever. He needs to work hard on those, plus:
Try to hit the ball on the rise. If he cannot attack those moonballs on the rise he has no chance to consistenly win this matchup.
Try dropshot + pass/lob combination. Force shirtless guy to the net.
Be aggressive with the returns. He does nothing with them.
Playing guys like that makes one a better player because you have to be patient, pick your spots to be aggressive and attack. I've improved my net game, so now when we play I'm getting to the net and finishing the points.
Either I don't know the rankings or these guys aren't very good at any shots. Maybe I'm a 5.0 or 5.5...than these 2 should be 3.5? I could hit winners off every shot these 2 push over! I doubt they would get any points off me. These 2 definitely don't have any real match experience. Just look at their swings, footwork, body movements and you can tell they're 3.5 at best.
Well, 5.0 players make/stick those shots that 4.5 plyrs sometimes miss, though the shots are not difficult, both can make it, but 5.0 guy just does it consistently. As for 5.5 plyr, these guys have a huge game, played in the upper tier of a Div. 1 college and above. Thanks for the comment, what level are you?
I live in Stockholm, Sweden and watched an over 50's tournament final like this on the weekend. In the warm-up you would guess one guy was 4.0/4.5 and the other a 3.0 pusher. Looked like a blowout. But the "3.0" guy got to EVERYTHING and sliced everything back high and deep to the middle and was great at lobbing or getting the ball to "4.5s" feet when "4.5" came to the net. Ended up 6-3 6-2 for "3.0". "4.5" was astonished. I don't think "3.0" went for one winner the whole match. Tennis...
@hz2vqk Yes, we see this scenario in the States too. However, the "pusher" can win consistently at 4.0 and to an extent at the 4.5 level, but run into trouble at 5.0 level as those players have too much game.
In tennis, just hit one more ball over (the net) than your opponent and you'll most likely win the point !
just..for the sake of it..if i were you I would do a drop shot to the shirtless guy, and when he return the ball, hit the ball as hard as I can to his chest...or his face..at least make him wear a shirt damnit!!
@casinowiz007 Let me help you out, this may sound simple but its the most simple way to beat a pusher. If you watch they hit the ball short all the time. You need to hit the ball cross court every time until they hit a short ball and aproach down the line and look for a easy volly. If they change direction fine, just rally cross court till they hit the ball short and approach down the line and hit a drop volley. If you want proof to this stratigy.. Iv'e 3 players inside the top 1000
3:49 "MY GOD PUT THAT BALL AWAY!!" "sorry partner" lmfao
well that guy in the shirt is very good, consistent yet powerful. But the shirtless guy is naturally athletic, he has the coordination to just chop all your balls back in, and he's very fast. good touch and fitness. some will say "pusher". but the shirt one has to look for ways to come to net. the shirtless guy can't pass you with a chop. easy pickings.
@casinowiz007 i would hit cross court short in the service box then next shot go deep cross court so that the pusher has to run at an angle. Bad weather for play tennis right now so I am watching tennis on youtube lol...
The shirtless guy may not have the prettiest strokes, but he plays in a very smart way. I particularly like the point starting at 9:30. I also agree that the other guy should try coming to the net a bit more, since it's hard to outhit fit guys like the shirtless one here. Also, you wouldn't have to deal with very fast passing shots when coming to the net against the shirtless guy.
@casinowiz007 Well, I'm going to Alabama this coming July 4 for the sectional 3.5 men, Yes our team beat state... Hope to see you there.... There will be many players including your 4.5 and 5.0...
Colorado won our section and are going to Nationals. They were just solid up/down the line-up, unlike us which have some holes (partly because some college kids couldn't make it).
Lol yeah, idk he seems like maybe a 3.0-4.0 not 4.5 to me. He walks back to the center of the court, no footwork really. Counter punches, thats not always bad; but for a 4.5 player it is. His serve is decent. Idk possibly but I don't see it being 4.5. I just versed a girl that plays for Wayne State University (D2 college I think) and beat her 6-4 and she was killing the ball. She was around a 4.5 so idk...
The guy in the shirt needs more variation to his game, the way he is allowing the shirtless dude to just dink the ball back each time is criminal.
Use slices to move him round but, more importantly, hit hard to one side and sneak inside the baseline, ss he moves back to the middle having dinked the shot back, smack it hard behind him, close the net and swot away the weak, high ball.
Eventually, he wont guess you so well, will make errors and you can put him away easy.
What if you play pusher-style against a pusher?Would it work?Give him a taste of his own medicine..By the way I like your forehands, especially the ones with the faster, swifter follow-through.
I have the same problem against ball pushers. But, you've just go to find a way to force their speedy lil asses to have to run so that you can open up a opportunity for a crushing volley.
You need to add some slices and drop shots to your game to force him to move more out of position. Because he's in all the right spots and he looks very comfortable.
@casinowiz007 Yeah, a lot of times players can just win due to their incredible fitness and determination to get every ball back despite their poor technique. It's annoying sometimes, but it's a facet of the game that you have to take into account.
@mk73183 - Yes, my opponent certainly has incredible fitness and quickness. In addition, his technique is quite sound too. He trained his son, who is a national junior player.

Good to see you rate yourself accurately. I've seen so many 4.5's that say 5/5.5 and it just sickens me. Good play, you are a warrior.

Lol who doesn't enjoy a game against a pusher?
The guy in the blue shirt is such a poor sap, he doesn't have the right techniques to beat the pusher which is sad.

"right techniques," what do you mean? strategy? Btw, blue shirt won (pretty consistently) but has to work hard. I'd love to win w/ ease, but how?
