You can trace back the origin of TKD to karate, Choi Hong Hi founder of TKD was Dan II Shotokan Karate. And you can trace back Karate to Okinawa Te then to CMA, But If you learn MP you’ll know MP training methods - especially MP breathing Techniques - are very different to TKD, Karate or CMA techniques and training methods. MP Breathing Techniques are more comparable to Yoga than CMA / Qigong

You could say TKD or Karate is copycat of CMA but MP not copycats any of them

  • for exemple, karate. the modern name is karate do, mean, the way of the open hand, at the beginning was okinawa te, the hand of okinawa. Some of the ancester of the okinawa te come from china...like sensei Morihei ueshiba said, the great goal in martial is to be one with the univers, whoever wanna fight me, he have already loose, because he fight the univers itself...u can find this kind of philosophi in many martial art. peace

  • centurys are paste and mandchu come and burn the shaolin temple 5 monk escape and hide around the china, teach in secret theyr art...from here many martial art comes out....

  • dear skilling22, im sure u already know the legend about propagation of martial art in the world. the main line is a monk from india goes by foot to china, meet some other monk, in the shaolin temple, he find them weak and not really able to focus when they meditating, so he teach them some physical practice to make them in a good shape, and so so.....

  • Looks just like a copycat of Kung Fu, Karate or Taekwondo, as with any Silat styles.

Indian Culture had influenced Indonesian Culture since 4th Century. Then in 7th–12th century Srivijaya Empire had become a Vajrayana Budhism Center of Excellent. Many Pilgrims and scholars would visit Srivijaya to learn Buddhism. Even Athisa - Buddhist Monk who played major role in the development of Buddhism in Tibet - was once lived in Srivijaya

If Bodhidharma (founder of Shaolin Kung Fu) came to China by the sea, he had to visit Srivijaya first - then who copycats who

  • @originalnature

Many fighting arts have already been existing in China way even before Boddhidharma's times in China. The Shaolin temple doesn't invent Shaolin Kung Fu, rather, it was the first to institutionalize them, giving them a proper syllabus, training methods and stuff like that. Many Silat styles clearly draw movements directly from oriental martial arts as with the stances, linear punches, etc due to abundance of settlers from China, Japan, etc. Now who copycats who.

  • @Skillking22

Indian settler came to Indonesia long before chinese settler. They also brought their martial arts such as kalaripayat, silambam etc and also their breathing techniques ( Yoga ). So you have to look a little bit deep further to know the origin of Silat. Silat exist b4 Chinese came to Indonesia

AFAIK Indonesian MA influenced Japanese MA not vice versa. For example Sai ( Okinawan Weapon ) in Indonesia known as trisula. Trisula originated from India.and then adopted by Silat

  • its true martial art like anything else. yes, indeed it is focused in your inner power. like qi gong in some of the term of Chinese MA. but more like emphasize to combine your true sixth sense to work together.

  • I'm interested in practicing Merpati Putih, but I still don't get its focus. Is it about hand-to-hand combat, or is it about breaking things?

I have 10+ years of experience in East Asian martial arts, Taekwon-do and Karate, so to me, Merpati Putih looks more like a fake art than anything else. Excuse my ignorance, though, but I simply need a clear-cut explanation.

  • MP is an empty handed martial art, focusing its training on breathing techniques

Back in 1960s karate was introduced in Indonesia and demonstrated its breaking things ability. MP then demonstrated the same thing as karate did to demonstrate silat can do the same thing too. MP demo had attracted military to make MP train their army. Since 1960s MPs been training more then 23 army battalion regularly

In 1978 Kopassus (Special Forces) demonstrated MP techniques on national TV for the first time

  • In 1988 Bola (Weekly Sport Newspaper) made special edition articles on MP. People became more aware that silat can do what karate can do. For Indonesian people who mostly have small figure, even if youre a black belt karate practitioner, its not guarantee that you can break 4 ice blocks. But MP practitioner can do that with ease

After 1980s MP became more popular for civilian, before that MP practitioners were mostly military personnel. Hope this can make you understand a little bit about MP

  • Okay, thanks for your explanation. Kinda enlightens me quite a bit.

  • dude, this martial art has inner power, so if it hit your body, ur deep organ will have great impact., just watch they break the stone n iron, the truly about this martial art is for war, it is about dead n live, not for the sport..the truly silat u can learn form village in indonesia, but it;sonly for specific person, but if u interest in silat., type 'presentation saudara kaum' , it 's style in silat
