From what I understand, the official explanation is that priests and nuns are "married to the church" so they can't have a spouse to distract them from their sacred duty.

In reality, it's something the church enacted in the Middle Ages to prevent the priests' property from being inhereited by their children, instead going to the church, which apparently didn't have enough stuff yet.
