ok, i've asked this on four diffrent videos, no answer....i've been a rock drummer for almost 20 years, and have my sound down pat....but recently i discovered a female lead singer that only plays quiet accoustic stuff, and she wants the start a group with her existing sets. the question is: is there a particular way i should tune my snare that works well with brushes and bundle sticks?
I play with my snare on but the advice you have received so far is great. If you want a jazz sounding tuning then tuning really tight will do that. I use regular tuning as I play a lot of country and country swing. I think choosing a good snare head is important, too. I use a single-ply coated head so the brushes have something to work with/against. Brush technique is difficult to master so keep playing and experimenting and it'll all come together.
whack it, dont brush it..

Hi ! Each drummer has an idea on how to tune his drums.. I tune the snare head
very tight and the batter head medium
this works the best for me as I like a crisp
snare sound. I play brushes with the snares off for a more mellow sound.
Hope that helps. Duncan

So typically you play jazz brushes with the snare off?

Yes..most of the time, the more mellow sound flows with the music. When a brighter sound is needed, I will use the snares. Good question!!
