@adamant9502 How did this comment get so many thumb-ups? You're misinterpreting the lyric if you think that statement is "sad." This song is about gender roles, and how they're socially constructed in essentialist terms.
@adamant9502 I think you are interpreting the lyrics wrong, by this he means he is a father, but he does not have to take on the gender role as 'dad', either male or female, female or female, male or male, can do this.
@MagneticMagnetic I think you are the one misinterpreting the lyrics. Listen to the words before and after that line. Paul obviously means that this father is trying to set his daughter straight, and not dress like a boy or whatever. It is the boy and the girl who are androgynous not the father. :P
@Apanzon First verse: Paul introduces and describes the two main characters, Dick and Jane. Second verse: Paul tells us not get "him" wrong. Who is "him," if not Dick? Paul then says that "she" doesn't need advice. You assumed "she" refers to Jane, and that's because it obviously does. Who would "she" be, if not Jane? Then there's the fact that the "he" and the "she" Paul is referring to "loved each other so," despite both rejecting gender norms. If it was Jane's dad, he'd be enforcing them, no?
@skinnymolink Maybe you are right, but yes the father could be enforcing the "gender norms" therefore it is followed by the line; "she don't need advice that'll center her"
@MrAsdfghjkl967, I've never seen printed music for it-- but I picked it out on the keyboard & wrote it up by myself when I was 17, so it must be Cavegirl Easy to figure out. ^^ If you have half a decent ear. I think it was played mostly entirely on the black keys & there isn't a helluva lot of variation on either hand.

I played & sang this on piano at my 11th-grade Spring Arts Expo in 1987, and I felt all sorts of sneaky that none of the passing parents knew what a totally subversive song they were hearing. :D
Such a great song! And still relevant today, too... life is STILL hard for people who like to dress & look outside the mold... and you'd think people would've learned at least SOMEthing from the grunge years (i.e. that girls in combat-boots are hot ^^).

Paul really is a great artist. I was into this band way back but only a few songs. I am going back and rediscovering them for myself.
