Just saw Mike in Omaha last Week. Has a new album comming out in a week or two (magnatude Records) I heard clips, Sounds great! He even sings black betty! Lots more slide guitar! Peace!
This was one more great tape I lost years ago. He did an appearance at the National Guitar Summer Workshop in New Milford, CT back in like 90(?) my friend got to go up an jam with him onstage, trading licks back and forth. Very nice guy. Afterwards he hung out just talking etc - no attitude whatsoever.

Such a great player. Really had his own voice and separated himself from the pack back in the day.

dannyhood66 1 year ago
Most people in that audience are so dumb..You are supposed to clap when your marveled...
dannyhood66 1 year ago
@dannyhood66 They were all too busy standing around with their arms crossed saying they could do it better. (old guitarist joke)

i agree with the first song, but i think the studio version of rain in the tunnel was better then the live version.

Firkins is one of those players who is instantly recognizable!! As soon as he starts playing, you know it's him!
sixtring73 2 years ago 4
I love when instrumental guitarists play with discernable melodic lines! Melody with technical skill; Firkins is a great guitarist.

this guy is awesome, imo his talent is good enought to be cosidered in the same level of quality of Vai, Satch, Morse and all those heavy weight guys

Good enough? I think hes better. No one else play even similar to him. He took guitar to another level.

I thought he was using a slide too!
Soulmaster420 3 years ago
No, he doesn't play slide, he has this unique sliding-fluid style, very personal and speciall, great player, verry underrated
jprarch 2 years ago 2
@Soulmaster420
He slides a lot while using his whammy bar,. Although he's playin' lots of thirds/sixths. They are a lil' bit trademarked to his sound.

Can't understand why this guy never got more recognition... A total guitar player, not just one style.

Michael Lee Firkens and Greg Howe really stood out among the Shrapnel Records crew...Michael's country licks are so fresh fused with fusion metal.
naturaltoby 3 years ago 2
you gotta love those whammy tricks. At first, I thought he was using a slide when i was listening to this.

That's "Space Crickets" (until 3:45), followed by "Rain in the Tunnel". Both off of M.L.F.'s first solo album.
