David...while it is true that Cherkassky chose to make London his base, he left Odessa very early in life and was definitely an American pianist in that his years of study were spent in the US. He was a pupil of Hofmann at Curtis and also worked with the American pianist David Saperton, Godowsky's son-in-law...I have noticed an unhealthy snobbery on the part of some here on YT when it comes to 'American pianists', as if they were somehow inferior to their European counterparts. What utter bosh!
Very entertaining, with many of the saucy Cherkaracteristics in evidence. He could be a Provocatikofiev when he wanted; i heard, in concert, superb 7th sonata & 2nd concerto.
But: NOT "American", (only as naturalised).......born in Odessa, he was as "Russian",(Ukrainian!) a pianist as ever one could find!
Quite a find! Thanks for uploading, I didn't know this great version. YouTube gives me more "Suggestions" on the right - I'd say Prokofiev, Richter, Vedernikov, Moiseiwitsch and this one, they are my favourite renditions!
And yes, thanks for this amazing post, as always! (;-D)
