This song is not about "New Year's Day".. It's about martial law in Poland in 1981-1983..At first song had to be about Bono's wife but then during watching TV News at New Year's Day of 1982 about crappy situation in Poland he changed lyrics to tell the world about nation which fought for freedom and democracy.. But as we can see it haven't gone as well as we wanted.
