guys to make a compass you rub the needle in your hair or on your jacket, float the needle on a leaf in some calm water or stick it through a small piece of cork so the cork is in the center of the pin and it should swing around showing you a north south line.

i dont know where he learned it and i must admit that idea has been publicized by "the Edge" but its been in survival manuals for a while.
