I think that Paul kid might be a pretty darn good songwriter one day if He don't go back to workin at the lumber mill. and His Doo Wop guys could probab;ly do alright by they own selves. Awesome,Combination Who Would Have Thunked It? Thanks For The Enjoyable Moments
How hmble the Oakridge boys are backing up Paul Simon. What a great song, and what humbilness, I guess that they don't tend to overpower Paul on the lead vocals. I wouldn't mind haveing them to back me up, I'll guarantee you. Marc Trainor.
what's amazing to me is that they were able to make it through the song with an audience that was respectful and silent. you'd never get that today. each beautiful harmony would be ruined by 'yeaaah's! and 'woo hoo's' and screams and hollers. it's sad that moments like this can't be had anymore without idiots screaming
@GrissomLovesSara couldn' agree more. Saw Dylan last summer and he (BOB DYLAN FOR GODS SAKE) was drowned out by inane chatter and drunk idiocy. My dad told me when he went to see dylan in the early 70's you could hear a pin drop in the quiet parts. I mean if you don't want to hear someone sing and play don't come to a gig!
don't ruin this beautiful simon tune with needless political pandering, let me give you some advise , their all full of it, and the whole things rigged, but atleast we have beautiful musicians like paul simon to listen to
Let' see, he turned a Republican -6% GDP to positive 5% in 3 quarters, Turned a Republican 900,000 job losses to 0 in 3 quarters, and is having to deal with the $1.4 trillion budget deficit left by GWB and the Republicans. Something to think about when paying your taxes. Republicans are lousy at running government and Democrats have to be the adults and clean up the mess. He'll balance the budget before he leaves office and then Repubicans will quickly screw it up again. Interesting thought.
@soulkiss1001 I have no idea what god or abortion have to do with economic growth. I can only assume that you are an absolutist who cares about only one or two things that sadly have no impact on your life.
I like to say, "If you don't like guns don't own one, if you don't like abortion don't have one, and if you don't like men don't date one."
But leave me and my freedoms alone and stop ramming your religion down my throat. If you want to live where religion controls you, go to Afghanistan.
@jasonkirkpat -stop ramming your socialist religion down my throat.god blesses economically those who live by his king james anointed christian gospel.....paul simon sings...god only knows man cant fully comprehend his plan his plan jesus loves you more than you will know
Don't get me wrong folks cuz I absolutely LOVE Wm Lee Golden, but I have to admit I find the comments by some of the youner posters pretty darn funny!! Examples: "Is that Gandalf?" "I didn't know Wookies could sing" Those comments are funny in that they refer to sci fi pop culture and if I did not know who Golden was I might have come up with the same type of little joke! Anyway great vid! I never knew ORB was the original backup for this song. Wow, learn something new every day!
Regarding the transferability of this song: I think that this song is as good as it gets--it reminds me of my upbringing in Minnesota. My wife says it reminds her of her upbringing in England. That just about says it all....
IMMORTAL SONG !! ... Paul Simon is as much a musical and lyrical genius as anyone ever in the music industry.
Paul Simon is definately one of my idols. many years of great songs always for the good of mankind and not the detriment of society. A music Legend !!
"a good day aint got no rain, a bad day is when i lie in bed and think of things that might've been." great lyrics from a gr8 songrighter. live without regret, life is too short. at least thats what i take from it.
I love Pauls voice. Its not chessy and tipical like most singers. I f his songs were song were sng by somone else they wouldent be close to as successful.
I don´t think he´s underrated - one would have to be deaf not to appreciate him, poet, writer, singer, musician. Briliant and loved all over the world, for decades.
His voice is another matter. Not everyone´s cuppa tea, not mine either.
what an amazing song and what an amazing man and songwriter. i will se him live in july for the first time... can't wait for it. paul simon is so vastly underrated, it's a shame.
I am answering to you from France. You are very lucky because you will see and hear him in July. Enjoy for me, please. I don't think Paul Simon is underrated, as you wrote, but yes, we would love to hear him more. I am pleased that he continues to play. Very good new ! Thanks. Cheers !
That's okay--my favorite musical artist, Paul Simon, is from my home country (USA); the other great artist already mentioned, Bob Dylan, is from my home state (Minnesota). I think that means I should sign off and smile. I'm signing off now, and smiling.
Funny you should say that. Bob opened for Paul at Jones Beach Long Island a few years ago. Dylan was terrible! I had to ask my husband what songs he was singing. He changed everything to the point that no one knew what song he was singing! Paul was amazing live and amazing with Art at the Garden a few years after that. Though I think he still hates Art, the concert was a once in a life time event!
why does everybody feel the need to comment on the way William Lee Golden looks? It is part of who he is, and having met him several times, I can tell you that he is one of the sweetest, earthiest, kindest country gentlemen on the planet. (How many stars do you know would have a PUBLIC open house to celebrate the rebuilding of his home after a tornado?) I have been a fan of Golden's for 25 years. He is and will continue to be an intregral part of the Oak Ridge Boys' magic.
Saw your comment about William Lee Golden and couldn't agree with you more! When I found out that he is a watercolor artist I sent him some top quality brushes that my father in law used to import from England for sale in the U.S., and Golden actually phoned me and left a message on my machine thanking me and expressing tremendous gratitude! A real class act....
@nanstef You make a very good point. For many years I found myself "hung up" on his looks, until I realized that they really mattered very little to his fans and the people who love him, and why should they matter to me?
@DUNKONE4ME -- If you've ever gotten close to him, I can tell you that his hair and beard are like silk. He is one of the kindest, sweetest men on the planet, and he has handed down that attitude to his sons. (Son Chris plays drums for the Oaks.) The Goldens treat their fans with respect and love. I was at an ORB show in NY State a few years ago. Golden signed autographs for almost 2 hours. The other three couldn't be bothered. (Didn't have a pen, etc....)
The Oaks sang backup for Paul Simon when he originally recorded this song in 1978, so when they shared the stage with him on this occasion, it was something of a homecoming. William Lee Golden didn't cultivate the "mountain-man" look until sometime in the 1980s.
Wonderful video! the funny thing is that I still have the original VHS when it was called "All-Star Gospel Session" 20 years later. Right now, I gotta get the DVD from FYE and fast!!!!!!!!!!!

Amen, jasonkirkpat. All ya gotta do is look for who was guarding the missing money.
Age old story; white man makes big mess, hires a black man to clean it up, then beats him while he's trying to work.
It's easy for Republicans to pass the buck; they stole all the bucks.

Who except Paul Simon writes this sort of universal but simultaneously specific material on a consistent basis, for over fifty years running?
If our great republic gave out knighthoods (which, of course, we don't), we'd have our own Sir Paul, and his last name would be Simon.
