I agree this is a bad version of Today but I think he may have been having an off day, or he was experimenting with the song. He can do Today the right way, or the original way. Here's a great example of that "The Smashing Pumpkins - Today (Live at Terminal 5 NYC ~ 07-26-2010)." I like the acoustic version of Today they did at The Secret Acoustic Show In Berlin the most.

@thermie he was like 20's when this song was on mtv and is probably almost 50 now. the guy is old now and his vocal chords are obviously are warn out by now from years and years of singing. also, this is a live performance whereas the mtv videos and such had sound equipment to make his voice all polished where it's all solid now. hearing anyone live is different than hearing after it's been recorded.

Depends was this song possibly played towards the end of the set. If so his vocals could be tired, and that's not his real voice, its a falsetto which, by the end of a concert, will completely destroy his voice. It's just hard to keep up a falsetto like that for any length of time.
