Teochew language has “informal” and “literary” reading for some characters:
三 (three, 3)informally read as “sa1”, literary read as “sam1”;
When 三is part of a name (noun) or book title, e.g. the classical Chinese book “The Three Kingdom” 三国演义 or just三国, the literary reading “sam1” is used and we say “Sam Kok” we don’t say “Sa Kok”
The same applies here, 三山国王庙,here 三is part of a noun, the name of the temple, thus we use the literary reading “sam” not the informal “sa”, so we say/read “Sam Sua’n Kok Uang Bhiê”
Btw, 山 (mountain) we say “sua” with nasalize ending sound (sua’n), if you just say “sua” w/o nasalization, it means 沙 (sand), you just misspoke the teochew word for “sand” not “mountain”.
i am a teochew from singapore,there are about 500,000 teochews in spore,we got 'sa swa kok wan beo' at lowland road off upper serangoon road .ka kee nan la.
I am the 3rd Generation of Teochew in Thailand, but unfortunately can speak very little Teochew. After studying more about the root of Teachew, I am very proud of being Teochew son. Our culture is very strong and certainly it must be preserved. I am now starting to brush up and learn my dad's language when I am 46. I will teach my sons the same to keep our Teochew's culture - no matter where they are in the future.
Hao-Tong, leu hoh! Good for you, I'm so proud of you that you're making good effort to rediscover our Teochew cultures and language and setting a good example for your children. I'll definitely do my part, lets rebuild our cultures, and making Teochew cultures strong and vibrant again.
i would say 80% of Cambodian-Chinese , most of them are Teochew, including my family too...:D....also i still can speak alittle bit of Teochew from ah kong and ah ma ....:)
@tangbkee many teochew people in Cambodia still speak teochew and kept their culture strong! My aunt in North Carlina is half Khmer and Teochew and man of her family speak teochew at home! All of her family were born in Cambodia! Teochew population is the largest among other chinese ethnics in Cambodia and now the population may be more and in the future also!
in Tennessee, you're in no man's land as far Chinese people goes, j/k. I'm glad you want to learn Teochew. Visit channel more often, most of the videos speaks either just Teochew or TC mix with Mandarin.
If you can take some mandarin classes then you can easily learn TC by watch my channel. I'll try to place as many TC annotations (romanization) on my videos as possible. At minimum you can familiar your ears by listening/watching these videos...pick a word here there...
you had good foundation in Khmer language, and bcuz Thai and Laotian language (grammar and colloquial sentence structures) are similar to Khmer so you can learn them easily.
You got some exposure to TC during your childhood... so it is very important if/when you have children give them some exposure to TC language and cultures when they are young.
Teochew elders in Cambodia are trying hard to build these cultural foundations...This temple is in Spean Daagk ("Steel Bridge") district.

Jakey the only way to learn teochew is to listen more and to speak more you can try to talk to your aunt in teochew in everyday conversation.
