im bi polar ,ex had borderline and her illness i would say more extreme with me where she only sees black or white good or bad and impulses in her brain would restrain, extreme emotional where i had to walk away and wonder why wtf?once a borderline gets it fixtated that either good or bad once they portray you as bad in my opinion in a relationship will more then likely not work, just wanted to share thanks,i love you dont leave me,better off without,it can be very scary god bless
It is so hard having borderline. U just want relationships but they seem to go wrong and all i want is one when i am not lied to or thinking they r cheating on me! I am like the women borderline!
I was diagnosed with Boderline Personailty disorder at the age of 19 then diagnosed with Bipolar type 2 at 21 . I can totally relate to the impulse control problems . I have done many things on a whim that I wouldn't normally do in a healthy state that will haunt me for a long time .My moods are very extreme and unpredictable . During the course of a few hours my mood can change from suicidal, lonely, giggly, hyper ,outgoing, but it always seems to go back to being depressed . : (
I have bipolar disorder and I definitely suffer from impulse control. My doctors think I could possibly suffer from BPD too. In my experience my moods can change pretty quickly. I can be depressed and barely get out of bed, then suddenly have all this energy and I can do anything. I have also suffered from psychosis which almost got me arrested. However, I am on meds and things have finally started to level out.
I just wanted to let you know that I was completely lost and mis understood my entire life until I stumbled on this video which gave me hope. Today I visited my psychologist who diagnosed me with Borderline Personality Disorder. Just wanted to say thank you :)
@RealityGrapple Oh, okay then it seemed familiar to me actually. I wasn't just spouting off BS, I read directly from those sites. What you said was rather harsh. All I'm trying to do is help people but I do advise them to everything you were concerned about & more, since this is JUST a v-log. I am paranoid too but I try, it's all I can do... And being criticized isn't very nice, no. But your opinions are valid & no one can take them from you. Take care.
@RealityGrapple I did the best I could with the info I have. My viewers requested it... I did all I needed to do as far as getting some information (though I couldn't go in depth) saying what experiences I have had or haven't had, that I am not a doctor, I advise they see a professional, gave resources. This is JUST a people/blogs channel and people should come here with that in mind instead of criticizing me like I am supposed to be a doctor. I will check out the link you gave.
@RealityGrapple Im sorry but as I said, I just read BRIEFLY word-for-word off a few websites, which are reliable websites, and I cited them (why don't you take a look at them?). This video isn't very in-depth obviously, and in 10 minutes I cannot go over all the types. I can only just briefly scratch the surface in 10 minutes. I am sorry if you think it's not informed well enough, but you seem to know a lot so why don't you make some videos on it and put them as a response? :)
@multiversedancer I am in recovery, I was giving this information to people who do not know much about it, talking about my experiences. @multiversedancer i found this VERY informative as I am living with someone whom I thought was bi polar but maybe it is borderline personality disorder and it is a HUGE help to hear the differences like this laid out by her for someone who doesn't know alot about it...
@RealityGrapple Look into the work of Stanislav Grof, Ken Wilbur, and Robert Whitaker. Also, I have spoken with many people who have found their "bipolar" is more of a spiritual imbalance. I have been labelled with the dis-ease and have been finding great healing in working with my shadow self and ego. Also, EFT (emotional freedom technique) is helping tremendously. As well as clean nutrition, yoga, exercise, meditation, nature, etc. This society loves to label everything.
Bpd is very scary when you don't know what's wrong with you. There should be more awareness of Bpd because noone has hardly heard of it, unless you suffer from it. I'd never heard of it until i got diagnosed with it.

I'm sorry but no one has any excuse for poor impulse control, going into a rage, getting pissed at others and not being able to control your emotions. This is criminal behavior and you belong in a mental institution locked up to protect those in general society.
@mickey0667 Did you even watch the video? I'm sorry you had a bad experience with someone with mental illness (this is always the case with comments like yours), but not everyone is like that. Yes, some people do go too far, and they do need help. But poor impulse control is treatable. No, personality disorders are not an EXCUSE for bad behaviors, but they do contribute to the behaviors in some people, it's an illness. You need to get educated before stereotyping everyone like that.
Spoken just like the psycho you are. Can't be civil to anyone. Must be hateful and vengeful and jealous especially of your intimate partner. Go to hell and don't come back.
Bipolar is not usually characterized by minute to minute mood swings. The mood swings are usually characterized by a depressive episode lasting at least two weeks and a manic episode about 5 days. They can last for a lot longer though.
@ajnachakraguy Sorry, but part of your remark is wrong. People with Bipolar Disorder suffer from mood swings throughout the DAY. It's not just every couple of weeks. They can suffer mood swings in just 20 minutes time, and even shift back and forth in just 1 hour. Trust me, I'm not making this stuff up.
@madeyes4u I have Bipolar Disorder and I've known tons of people with the disorder. Only two of them that I met had mood swings throughout the day. I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm saying that this form of the disorder is uncommon and is not the usual definition from a psychiatrist. Even the DSM makes it clear how long an episode usually has to last. Again, it can happen but it's not the most common. But if you have sources, I would like to see them. I learn something new every day.
@ajnachakraguy I really don't have time to look up sources, nor am I that interested in looking up sources because I know this for myself. I know a handful of people with the disorder also, and it IS common for mood swings to happen throughout the day. I'm really not asking you to believe me, though.
And no disrespect to you, but fuck the DSM. Those are the same people who are trying to erase Asperger's from the book.
@madeyes4u If you ever get a chance to, I would like to see it (no disrespect intended, either). I've googled this topic in the past and this is what I have learned since my diagnosis some time ago. I want to learn as much as I can about this disorder and if I am wrong, I want to learn why I am wrong.
The DSM isn't all bad. I've been diagnosed with Asperger's too and I wasn't all that offended by them attempting to do this but I can see problems with doing that. They can take the diagnosis
thank you for that video, I have leant a lot about the differences in the 2 disorder. before when I was self harting I was thinking that I was showing signs of bipolar, but after wathing you video I see now it was a few signs there for borderline personality disorder.so thank you
One of the biggest differences in Bpd and bi polar is alot of the borderlines behaviour is caused by their fear of abandonment, but defintaely agree about the environmental factors causing and mood and behaviour changes. Also after an argument , borderlines can feel suicidal, (fear of abandonment can cause psychotic episodes.) Good job explaining differences i have bpd.
btw anyone interested i started doing Daily Vlog i guess to keep a track on my moods, you can see the days where ive stopped vlogging for a few days is because of my moods but the days im vlogging usually are ok days or good days, also for memory sake with my husband, anyone interested go to my channel. much love xx
@natasjaJerjomina I will check out your vlog! Thanks so much for sharing your experiences :) I'm sure people can learn a lot from you and also relate! xo
i was told first i had BPD but it was being i didnt know that some of the symptoms i was having was anything to do with bipolar because i always had nervous break downs and tantrums at points and then get hyper at other stages in my life but it turns out it was Bipolar, so im officially told its Bipolar but its hard to tell if both are mixed cause the illneses share same symptoms accept bipolar has more.
There is a good brief article for the general public about this topic on psychology today.com but it will not let me post a link in your comments. You can google it, the article is under the title "Three Easy Ways to Differentiate Bipolar and Borderline Disorders".
@tumnjun I will google it, but the articles I used and the book I used are cited in my more information tab. If there are differing opinions in the medical community then people need to research it more in depth, I am just speaking from my personal experience and a BRIEF overview here. I don't have time for an in-depth discussion, it'd take me an hour or more, that's why I am doing a series.
You should start your video off with a disclosure that you have no education or medical background in these topics and are merely a patient advocate. I have had both BPD+BPII. I've been dealing with this for dozens of years+studying both extensively. I enjoy your videos but I disagree with a lot of things you've said here. Some of what you've said is misinformation. It could be damaging. There're many disputable resources out there, so people should speak to a professional, not learn off youtube
@tumnjun I said the EXACT thing in the more info tab. I don't have time for disclaimers in every video, obviously people should know since I say I ONLY speak from personal experience, and ONLY have personal experience with BPD, not BP - that I am not a professional. I state it all the time. My sources are cited in the more info tab, I read it all verbatim, which is why I showed notes. If you want to make a more informative video on borderline and bipolar, be my guest :)
i just noticed that you have a very pretty handwriting =) and i like the video, very informative and i think you explained the differences very well <3
Very informative... I have been given a diagnosis of both BP and BPD, yet I know I have BP, however the BPD symptoms are there, but both the psychologist and I agree they aren't "extreme" enough for it to have been made a full diagnosis. I also seem to read conflicting material a lot about BPD symptoms. I'm guessing you've read as much as I have, and it's nice to know someone has made heads and tails of it. Thanks so much xx
Can you do a video about controling your emotions with BPD in a healthy way, instead of self harm ect. I think i have BPD amd the only way i knew how to control my emotions was through cutting but i'm in recovery. And i don't know how to control them.
Do you have a video about how to handle all this extreme emotions?
I'm in a point in my life when I just can't allow myself being controlled by that, I'm trying to find a solution by my self, but clearly that doesn't work so well thou to the scars on my arm.
So I would love to read or watch anything about copping and handling strong emotions.
Thanks again for those videos, always interesting and comforting.
@Lupussssssssssssssss All my links are on my channel page, you can click on the logos on the banner or you can look below at the links in my channel info :)
Oh and self injury is also part of bipolar a good 60% of bipolar people I know use self injury as a coping skill for the intense emotions so bipolar people do self injure without being bpd
@DeepWater92 Yes, people who are bipolar can SI, obviously. But its not seen as a symptom of bipolar when it is diagnosed. SI would generally be seen as a symptom of an underlying problem such as depression OR Borderline. You can have, and usually do have, multiple diagnoses when you've got a mood disorder. I'm sorry I couldn't go further into detail, its a lot of pressure getting all the info I can into 10 minutes.
Good vid... but your a bit off. There's a huge diffrence between bipolar 1 and bipolar 2, bipolar 1 people who get hyermanic can't think straight and usaully get very agressive because we have so many thoughts going through our head. Bipolar 2 people don't get hyermanic they get hypomanic and are full of energy and productive but still have racing thoughts. Accroding to the DSM(4?) BPD (borderline personailty disorder) is a personality disorder and is caused by learned behavor btw I have both.
@DeepWater92 I didn't have the time or resources in one 11 min. video to talk about the different types of bipolar, as well as BPD. I could only compare and contrast the basics. I don't have bipolar, so there are probably better videos online that go more in depth into Bipolar 1 & 2 if people want to look for those. I just talked about what I learned in my research as an overview.
@DeepWater92 There's also something called Cyclothymia which is an even more rapid version of Bipolar. It's usually the characteristics of BP2, but can cycle many times during the day, rather than the usual day/week type cycle. Sometimes however, it can have the symptoms of BP1. I have this version. I have episodes that can last from 10mins to 6 hours and are quite intense, ranging from believing I can fly (mania) to going practically unconscious and doing everything in my power to hurt myself.
Pretty interesting video. The only thing I would of added is anger. It's associated with both, but for different reasons. Also I disagree with the "if you cut you probably have both". Doctors look way too much into the "lol you cut you're borderline" thing and it's super irritating. I have few borderline symptoms (impulse control, self injury) and I self injure. Yes, it is rarer for bipolars to cut, but I think doctors need to quit with the "YOU CUT? YOU MUST BE BORDERLINE" shit. lol
@retroscenery I'm sorry, I dont have as much time needed to get to everything, though I did mean that if you are already pre-diagnosed with Bipolar, and you have symptoms of borderline, such as SI, then you can have both. its a possibility and in everything I read while doing research. But I also have tried to point out that if you SI and are bipolar, the SI could be directly linked to an underlying problem like depression. Its just not a "symptom" of Bipolar.
@xsullengirlx Oh okay, thanks for clearing that up lol. I do know what you mean though, since it is very black and white. I think the problem with depression and borderline is both are very black and white, so they overlap a lot, probably the reason borderline is associated with depression. You did a very good job with this though. I hope I didn't sound too critical, I just take mental illness seriously but I think the video was very easy to understand and informative.
So if someone has all the symptoms of BD except that they react to their environment rather than their mood shifting without reason, that would mean they suffer from both right?
@liveeloveegagaa23 Nope. Basically to be bipolar you must have mania and depression. Well, bipolar people can have only mania, in bipolar one cases, but that's less common, and hypomania MUST have depression followed. The major differences between borderline and bipolar as far as moods? Borderlines change theirs much faster and they don't experience mania or hypomania. If you have BPD symptoms and mania? You're probably bipolar.
i had poor impulse control when it came 2 drugs and i think i always will, although i dont do them anymore. they were making me so much worse than i already was. when i hear all the criteria of bpd, its like describing me 2 a tee but i never received a diagnosis 4 anything, bpd or otherwise. my moods can swing big time but i get over them real quick. like the other day, my dad pissed me off and i was sooo angry, i felt on the verge of a nervous breakdown. 10 minutes later i was over it.
Tell me about it. I've been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder w/Depression, and my moods do swing big time. One minute I can be alright with my husband, and the next minute, I feel irritated with him, and am snappy toward him. It's tough having bipolar. I can't even hold a job because of my mood swings plus chronic anxiety.
I'm bipolar, but I had self harm episodes. People with bipolar can have episodes of self harm. Unless I'm both.. which I might be, I've never had any psychiatrist even mention it to me. When someone is in a depressive state like people get with bipolar they can have self harm episodes. Thanks for making this video. It's really helped me understand what BPD is, I might do some more research into it, because it kind of sounds like I might have both. Although I also have an anxiety disorder so that
@everythingamelia I'm sure the self-harm is a symptom of underlying depression. All I meant was that when diagnosing Bipolar, self-injury is not a "symptom" typical of it. But it doesn't mean people with Bipolar don't SI, many do... But it's not directly due to their Bipolar disorder, whereas with BPD it can lead to someone having self-harming urges. Hope that makes sense, it's just what I've read in my research. :)
@xsullengirlx No that totally makes sense. I really am glad my friend sent me the link to this video. I'm making a series on my experience with bipolar disorder, but I've never known what BPD really is, and I'm going to do some more research because I have all the symptoms you talked about. Sometimes my mood swings are caused by environmental factors, although mostly they are random. Do you know if the treatments for BPD and Bipolar are the same?
im diagnosed schizo affective, and bipolar. im also a cutter at my worst, can you tell me anything about the two combined to help my wife and i understand me better?
The hardest part for me is that I have Bipolar Disorder II so I've always been on the depressed side with little bits of anger. Which makes it harder to diagnose.
@CelebrianoLorien From what I have read, the mood swings with Bipolar can be quick OR they can last a week or more. I think it depends on the person and how severe it is. With BPD though, usually mood swings don't last as long.
I always wanted someone to highlight the differences between OCD and OCPD. People tend to get confused, even those are two completely different disorders.
@teaandrainydays Yes, I was diagnosed in my late teens. I think sometimes doctors hold off on diagnosing younger teens with mood disorders because of their hormonal changes that are taking place at that age. Its not impossible though, and the earlier diagnosed and the earlier treatment is gotten, the better off I think someone would be... As you get older, it tends to be harder.
@xsullengirlx My doctor blamed it on all hormones I tried to get help 5 times before I turned 18 and he gave me the same we don`t like to treat minors your just a teenager rant now I'm 20 and I still haven't gotten any help and it has only gotten worse
@xsullengirlx I was told when I was 17 that all they could say was that I had "borderline characteristics" because they couldn't diagnose me with it until I was turned 18.
@kmusard A lot of doctors won't diagnose someone before they are 18 with a mood disorder, but I think it depends on who you see. I think when I was younger they also said something about me having Borderline characteristics too.
Really interesting video. I'm begging to be tested to see if I have borderline, but the doctors and psychiatrists are so slow! It takes forever. It's frustrating and it makes me more angry than usual.
My ex had bi polar everyone but him believes it. He thought marijuana helped him cure that IT was his medication, however that wasn't the case it actually made them more negative and extreme to an abusive nature. This of course was the biggest reason we divorced. Bipolar can be scary at times...or least in my ex's case.
@AngelBug109 Oh lord, I can relate. My sister has undiagnosed Bipolar (I am not an expert, but I do think it's true), and she "treats" it with marijuana too. It actually intensifies her mood swings, and recently became very violent with me after smoking weed and having a mood swing. In my opinion undiagnosed Bipolar can be dangerous especially mixed with substances. It can be scary, of course it depends on the person but I completely relate to you.
@xsullengirlx if my girl (whos 5) didnt have grandma (his mom) and his gf with her baby half sis living with him (babysitting) well I would get full custody of mariel. And despite all the abuse I got (mostly mental/emotional) he treats her well never any harm. But I am not dumb I still observe things. But hope your sis seeks help
Thank you for making this video. I'm going into working as a mental health nurse and I was still confused as the difference between the two of them. I have a question though, you said SI is typically a BPD symptom but what about alcohol and drug addictions, are they more often BPD or can they be either??
@3eternity3 From what I have read, BPD usually has characteristics of poor impulse control - this can include everything from SI, to drug addiction, alcoholism and sex addiction... I think they are more OFTEN associated with BPD but unfortunately impulse control is a huge feature of both, so I'd say it could go either way.
@3eternity3 Well I'm sure that BPD has a high rate of substance abuse, and I know that they tend to be promiscious, it's pretty common for bipolars to engage in drugs and sex while manic. Many get hyper sexual and have urges to try drugs out of no where, and many are more likely to attend parties and things like that while manic. I'm not sure if one does it more than the other as both do them, but bipolar mania is pretty notorious for drugs and sex.
Note that many people with bipolar disorder don't have the typical highs and lows. For some of us, the highs are not positive. Mania can manifest as anger, panic, extreme irritability and an inability to get anything done because the manic energy is trapped within, and does not translate into being productive.
I might have both, but I really am not sure. I'm diagnosed bipolar type II and have a feeling you didn't really say how different bipolar disorder can manifest in different people. E.g., several of my friends have type I and completely different symptoms.
As for personality disorders, I would love to know more about avoidant personality disorder. my mom was diagnosed with it last year and I can't really wrap my head about what it means. except for extreme anxiety.
I think I have both, but because my psychologist hasnt seen me manic, he refuses to listen to me. I'm already diagnosed with BPD, social anxiety disorder and possible PTSD...
My sister had Borderline Personality Disorder. It's been quite hard to cope with when I was younger; it caused a lot of trouble in how our family functioned in the past. Even now, years later (I'm 16 now) it can be hard to cope with. She constantly pushes me away after we get some form of a sister-sister bonding; and to put it in perhaps a bit of a rude way: it sucks. I really feel like I'm so done with her, but for a big part it's probably her disorder's fault :/ Your video was very helpful!
@hietsefriets I was wondering in what way you found this video helpful to you. What was it about the video that drew your attention in particular? In the way that you found it helpful, what as a result, can you envisage to do differently that perhaps you wouldn't have done if you hadn't viewed it? I am a therapist by the way, so I am curious to understand your 'helpful' experience.
@hietsefriets I know what you mean. It is hard to cope in a living situation when someone close to you suffers from BPD, it tends to mean that people around them suffer too, if it goes untreated. From experience, I spent most my life pushing people away, though now that I am more aware of it I can control it better, for the most part. Don't give up on your Sis, but you need to be healthy & happy, so if you have to step back don't feel guilty. Glad I could help.
I think I'm one with both. Diagnosed with Bipolar but think I'm Borderline. Bipolar triggers when I'm stressed or sleeping off. Borderline because of crazy things I do at the spur of the moment when something happens (took a box of sleeping pills once because I was pissed at my husband.) I use to self injure and would do so more if I didn't have all my favorite 'toys' around the house to do so. Thanks for this video, it was very educational. {Hugs} cause you are my favorite YT'er!
Thanks for sharing again. I am still not feeling well and am in the hospital with severe anxiety attacks, but will get the info copied that I told you about when I am out of hospital and feeling better. Lord, I went in their with extreme anxiety and then they reduced my anti depressant and removed my morning dose of anxiety medication. Not only that, I haven't been getting my thyroid medication. So the behaviour they've been monitoring is not accurate. Yeah me, another two weeks there at le
I don't know if I'm bipolar II or bpd. I think i have bpd but my therapist doesn't like that DX. I feel like bipolar is so over diagnosed and BPD is very misunderstood. I think also a huge difference with bpd and bipolar is that a lot of times bpd is rooted in the fear of abandonment, low self esteem and fear of rejection. Almost everyone I know with bpd had bad childhoods or went through something traumatic in their adolescence.
Uprated. I recommend the riseingstardust channel. I've learned to work with doctors and the health ministries here in France to provide them with information in French. It turns out I am "normal" but abused by undiagnosed people around me over the years, so this affects all of us. It all has basically destroyed me, and I don't expect to live much longer.
Do they use their temper & anger as a weapon to hurt others on purpose ?

I tend to simplify it down to bpd being a less severe form of bipolar mixed with severe depression

I happen to suffer from both and its been said that I have more mood swings then a woman with p.m.s
kansasjamiemcmurray 2 months ago
Bipolar is not usually characterized by minute to minute mood swings. The mood swings are usually characterized by a depressive episode lasting at least two weeks and a manic episode about 5 days. They can last for a lot longer though.
ajnachakraguy 2 months ago in playlist Uploaded videos
@ajnachakraguy Sorry, but part of your remark is wrong. People with Bipolar Disorder suffer from mood swings throughout the DAY. It's not just every couple of weeks. They can suffer mood swings in just 20 minutes time, and even shift back and forth in just 1 hour. Trust me, I'm not making this stuff up.
madeyes4u 1 month ago in playlist More videos from xsullengirlx
@madeyes4u I have Bipolar Disorder and I've known tons of people with the disorder. Only two of them that I met had mood swings throughout the day. I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm saying that this form of the disorder is uncommon and is not the usual definition from a psychiatrist. Even the DSM makes it clear how long an episode usually has to last. Again, it can happen but it's not the most common. But if you have sources, I would like to see them. I learn something new every day.
ajnachakraguy 1 month ago
@ajnachakraguy I really don't have time to look up sources, nor am I that interested in looking up sources because I know this for myself. I know a handful of people with the disorder also, and it IS common for mood swings to happen throughout the day. I'm really not asking you to believe me, though.
And no disrespect to you, but fuck the DSM. Those are the same people who are trying to erase Asperger's from the book.
madeyes4u 1 month ago
@madeyes4u If you ever get a chance to, I would like to see it (no disrespect intended, either). I've googled this topic in the past and this is what I have learned since my diagnosis some time ago. I want to learn as much as I can about this disorder and if I am wrong, I want to learn why I am wrong.
The DSM isn't all bad. I've been diagnosed with Asperger's too and I wasn't all that offended by them attempting to do this but I can see problems with doing that. They can take the diagnosis
ajnachakraguy 1 month ago
@madeyes4u ...out of the book but they can't stop the symptoms people are having. They will have that identity for the rest of their lives.

There is a good brief article for the general public about this topic on psychology today.com but it will not let me post a link in your comments. You can google it, the article is under the title "Three Easy Ways to Differentiate Bipolar and Borderline Disorders".
tumnjun 2 months ago
@tumnjun I will google it, but the articles I used and the book I used are cited in my more information tab. If there are differing opinions in the medical community then people need to research it more in depth, I am just speaking from my personal experience and a BRIEF overview here. I don't have time for an in-depth discussion, it'd take me an hour or more, that's why I am doing a series.
xsullengirlx 2 months ago
You should start your video off with a disclosure that you have no education or medical background in these topics and are merely a patient advocate. I have had both BPD+BPII. I've been dealing with this for dozens of years+studying both extensively. I enjoy your videos but I disagree with a lot of things you've said here. Some of what you've said is misinformation. It could be damaging. There're many disputable resources out there, so people should speak to a professional, not learn off youtube
tumnjun 2 months ago
@tumnjun I said the EXACT thing in the more info tab. I don't have time for disclaimers in every video, obviously people should know since I say I ONLY speak from personal experience, and ONLY have personal experience with BPD, not BP - that I am not a professional. I state it all the time. My sources are cited in the more info tab, I read it all verbatim, which is why I showed notes. If you want to make a more informative video on borderline and bipolar, be my guest :)

And i don't know how to control them.
paperwhiterose 2 months ago
Thanks for another interesting video :]

DeepWater92 2 months ago
@DeepWater92 Yes, people who are bipolar can SI, obviously. But its not seen as a symptom of bipolar when it is diagnosed. SI would generally be seen as a symptom of an underlying problem such as depression OR Borderline. You can have, and usually do have, multiple diagnoses when you've got a mood disorder. I'm sorry I couldn't go further into detail, its a lot of pressure getting all the info I can into 10 minutes.
xsullengirlx 2 months ago 3
Good vid... but your a bit off.
DeepWater92 2 months ago 2
@DeepWater92 I didn't have the time or resources in one 11 min. video to talk about the different types of bipolar, as well as BPD. I could only compare and contrast the basics. I don't have bipolar, so there are probably better videos online that go more in depth into Bipolar 1 & 2 if people want to look for those. I just talked about what I learned in my research as an overview.
xsullengirlx 2 months ago
@DeepWater92 There's also something called Cyclothymia which is an even more rapid version of Bipolar. It's usually the characteristics of BP2, but can cycle many times during the day, rather than the usual day/week type cycle. Sometimes however, it can have the symptoms of BP1. I have this version. I have episodes that can last from 10mins to 6 hours and are quite intense, ranging from believing I can fly (mania) to going practically unconscious and doing everything in my power to hurt myself.
xXxTheHappyEmoxXx 2 months ago
Pretty interesting video. The only thing I would of added is anger. It's associated with both, but for different reasons. Also I disagree with the "if you cut you probably have both". Doctors look way too much into the "lol you cut you're borderline" thing and it's super irritating. I have few borderline symptoms (impulse control, self injury) and I self injure. Yes, it is rarer for bipolars to cut, but I think doctors need to quit with the "YOU CUT? YOU MUST BE BORDERLINE" shit. lol
retroscenery 2 months ago
@retroscenery I'm sorry, I dont have as much time needed to get to everything, though I did mean that if you are already pre-diagnosed with Bipolar, and you have symptoms of borderline, such as SI, then you can have both. its a possibility and in everything I read while doing research. But I also have tried to point out that if you SI and are bipolar, the SI could be directly linked to an underlying problem like depression. Its just not a "symptom" of Bipolar.
xsullengirlx 2 months ago
@xsullengirlx Oh okay, thanks for clearing that up lol. I do know what you mean though, since it is very black and white. I think the problem with depression and borderline is both are very black and white, so they overlap a lot, probably the reason borderline is associated with depression. You did a very good job with this though. I hope I didn't sound too critical, I just take mental illness seriously but I think the video was very easy to understand and informative.
retroscenery 2 months ago
So if someone has all the symptoms of BD except that they react to their environment rather than their mood shifting without reason, that would mean they suffer from both right?
liveeloveegagaa23 2 months ago
@liveeloveegagaa23 Nope. Basically to be bipolar you must have mania and depression. Well, bipolar people can have only mania, in bipolar one cases, but that's less common, and hypomania MUST have depression followed. The major differences between borderline and bipolar as far as moods? Borderlines change theirs much faster and they don't experience mania or hypomania. If you have BPD symptoms and mania? You're probably bipolar.
retroscenery 2 months ago
i had poor impulse control when it came 2 drugs and i think i always will, although i dont do them anymore. they were making me so much worse than i already was. when i hear all the criteria of bpd, its like describing me 2 a tee but i never received a diagnosis 4 anything, bpd or otherwise. my moods can swing big time but i get over them real quick. like the other day, my dad pissed me off and i was sooo angry, i felt on the verge of a nervous breakdown. 10 minutes later i was over it.

Tell me about it. I've been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder w/Depression, and my moods do swing big time. I can't even hold a job because of my mood swings plus chronic anxiety.

everythingamelia 2 months ago
I'm bipolar, but I had self harm episodes. People with bipolar can have episodes of self harm. Unless I'm both.. which I might be, I've never had any psychiatrist even mention it to me. When someone is in a depressive state like people get with bipolar they can have self harm episodes. Thanks for making this video. It's really helped me understand what BPD is, I might do some more research into it, because it kind of sounds like I might have both. Although I also have an anxiety disorder so that
everythingamelia 2 months ago
@everythingamelia I'm sure the self-harm is a symptom of underlying depression. All I meant was that when diagnosing Bipolar, self-injury is not a "symptom" typical of it. But it doesn't mean people with Bipolar don't SI, many do... But it's not directly due to their Bipolar disorder, whereas with BPD it can lead to someone having self-harming urges. Hope that makes sense, it's just what I've read in my research. :)
xsullengirlx 2 months ago
@xsullengirlx No that totally makes sense. I really am glad my friend sent me the link to this video. I'm making a series on my experience with bipolar disorder, but I've never known what BPD really is, and I'm going to do some more research because I have all the symptoms you talked about. Sometimes my mood swings are caused by environmental factors, although mostly they are random. Do you know if the treatments for BPD and Bipolar are the same?

CelebrianoLorien 2 months ago
@CelebrianoLorien From what I have read, the mood swings with Bipolar can be quick OR they can last a week or more. I think it depends on the person and how severe it is. With BPD though, usually mood swings don't last as long.

Can teenagers be diagnosed with borderline personality disorder?
teaandrainydays 2 months ago
@teaandrainydays Yes, I was diagnosed in my late teens. I think sometimes doctors hold off on diagnosing younger teens with mood disorders because of their hormonal changes that are taking place at that age. Its not impossible though, and the earlier diagnosed and the earlier treatment is gotten, the better off I think someone would be... As you get older, it tends to be harder.
xsullengirlx 2 months ago
@xsullengirlx My doctor blamed it on all hormones I tried to get help 5 times before I turned 18 and he gave me the same we don`t like to treat minors your just a teenager rant now I'm 20 and I still haven't gotten any help and it has only gotten worse
anonyuser459 2 months ago
@xsullengirlx I was told when I was 17 that all they could say was that I had "borderline characteristics" because they couldn't diagnose me with it until I was turned 18.
kmusard 2 months ago

AngelBug109 2 months ago
@AngelBug109 Oh lord, I can relate. My sister has undiagnosed Bipolar (I am not an expert, but I do think it's true), and she "treats" it with marijuana too. It actually intensifies her mood swings, and recently became very violent with me after smoking weed and having a mood swing. In my opinion undiagnosed Bipolar can be dangerous especially mixed with substances. It can be scary, of course it depends on the person but I completely relate to you.

AngelBug109 2 months ago
Thank you for making this video. I'm going into working as a mental health nurse and I was still confused as the difference between the two of them. I have a question though, you said SI is typically a BPD symptom but what about alcohol and drug addictions, are they more often BPD or can they be either??
3eternity3 2 months ago
@3eternity3 From what I have read, BPD usually has characteristics of poor impulse control - this can include everything from SI, to drug addiction, alcoholism and sex addiction... I think they are more OFTEN associated with BPD but unfortunately impulse control is a huge feature of both, so I'd say it could go either way.
xsullengirlx 2 months ago

I am a therapist by the way, so I am curious to understand your 'helpful' experience.
malcol97 2 months ago

Borderline because of crazy things I do at the spur of the moment when something happens (took a box of sleeping pills once because I was pissed at my husband.) I don't know if I'm bipolar II or bpd.
