If the Saab driver hit the top speed of 240 km/h instead of less than 230 Km/h, the Saab will be less than 2 second behind BMW. I have hit close to 240 Km/h many times, it is always the running out of open safe road that stop the speed. I know it is the hand that is sweating. People who don't know Saab think that when its hit 220+ the car is tuned. By the way, my 96 Saab 9000 CSE (16 yrs old )is still with me today and still going strong tailgating rich folks cars.

@sweduden Yea that makes sense. I've never owned or ridden in an older M5, so I'm not sure how they would compare. From the little I know of the newer BMWs, I saw that they got a lot faster in 2004-2006 range and those cars will dust any of the older Saabs or BMWs and agreed, there isn't much of a point to comparing them. Apples and oranges.

I have choosen a Saab 9000 2.3 Turbo for the family - it is a safe, reliable and well-equipped car. Well-thought, lots of space for the kids (and theit toys), lots of space for the shopping (no need to explain, do I?)
Excellent car for winter (we currently live in Sweden).
Plus, I can have some fun (I usually get away with it, since we are both car lovers, my wife and me)
We both do not want to miss it anymore, it's even better than a van Allthough Saab is dutch these days - excellent car.
Funny how some people needs to trash Saab because this car can't keep ud with a car with 10 years newer technology and about 2.5 times the horsepower - what is so surprising about that?

Comparing to a 2006 M5 is indeed pointless. Compare the car within its year and realize the Saab 9000 was/is a phenomenal car. I love mine. 201,000 miles currently and still going strong, fit a washer and dryer in the back at the same time, and when opportunity presents itself - rarely do I lose a race on the highway..
Saab makes [made] good cars. BMW makes good cars. By nature, one will be faster than the other. Saab didn't make I4's to compete with BMW's V6's/ V8's...

@rkjer Nah, more and likely the hose feeding the gauge has fell, or popped off resulting in normal atmospheric pressure showing, it should be much further round to the right at this sort of rpm. Mine used to pop off often when I gave it some hard stick, hasn't done it since I actually glued it in place!!

Do that a few minutes longer and you see the tank gauge descending. I estimate the engine to consume around 80 litres per hour at full powerwhich results in 4 litres in just this three minutes. Probably the gauge is not working properly like in many SAABs...

It's true the Saab would not have a real chance of competing with the M5, but it still does an ok job keeping up for a while especially considering the age and price difference of the two cars. After all there not really even comparable, I say that even though I am a Saab owner and enthusiast :)

vmax was 160mph and acceleration was comparable to upper class of BMW or Mercedes. I often challenged those cars on german Autobahn, and I loved their humiliated expressions in their faces when I overtook them because their cars bolted at 155 ;)))
er m5 has topspeed over 320kmh.. saab will be lucky to go over 300kmh, but a properly tunned saab has greater accleration than bmw m5.. i know there is a saab that does 40-250 kmh in 14 sec .. which is pretty damn fast for a i4 engine

well, the M5 does have at least 2 liters on the 9000... as they say, there's no substitute for cubic inches.
for a 2.3 liter 4-banger to stay with a V-8 is pretty good, IMHO

@TheJonnyDude That SAAB tops out at 146mph - the BMW is limited to 155mph - without the limiter it will do 200mph+ - so there's no way in hell that SAAB could catch that BM - look at the vid - the BM brakes before the SAAB catches up...lol

Not bad considering all the mentioned differences between the two. The BMW has youth technology on its side..However the Saab didn't look foolish.
When one considers engine capabilities, equipment options, and price...Saab's are a excellent choice!...and James Bond 007 drove both;)

Chasing an M5??? Come on lets be honest, I have a 850 T5 so i'm not biased, but that M5 was just playing. Did you see how much he pulled on the Saab when he buried the throttle? Anyone else see that? This Sabb couldn't even pull past 220km/h, my T5 will pull all the way to 245km/h and would still get a total owning from an M5 anytime, anyday, end of. Sorry guys but it's true

It's true the Saab would not have a real chance of competing with the M5, but it still does an ok job keeping up for a while especially considering the age and price difference of the two cars. After all there not really even comparable, I say that even though I am a Saab owner and enthusiast :)

That's my point though, was he really keeping up? The M5 was just cruising along minding it's own buisness at about 120 mph and as soon as the Saab turned up the M5 disapeared off the radar! :) Nothing against Saab though, they are great cars and along with Volvo they are often underestimated

Notice that at the end of the video, the saab goes 200km/h in 4th gear, while the BMW probably goes in 5th gear and is still disappearing. :)

my dad used to own a sabb 9000 2.3 turbo sport i think it was a 1992 model and man was it fast i loved it but my dad sold it and got an evo instead.

I once owned a 9k 2,3turbo, slightly modified...
vmax was 160mph and acceleration was comparable to upper class of BMW or Mercedes. I often challenged those cars on german Autobahn, and I loved their humiliated expressions in their faces when I overtook them because their cars bolted at 155 ;)))

9000 aero's and 9-3 viggens are the nicest. 9-5 aero's are nice too. all you ave to do to increase the top speed is adjust the gearing.

er m5 has topspeed over 320kmh.. saab will be lucky to go over 300kmh, but a properly tunned saab has greater accleration than bmw m5.. i know there is a saab that does 40-250 kmh in 14 sec .. which is pretty damn fast for a i4 engine

the saab tops the speed of about 225 km/h but the BMW's speed LIMIT is at 250 km/h, the speed of the BMW would be approx. 300 km/h without the limitation put in the chip.

i agree with you. still saabs are good value for money. and you can power 'em up easily, for less money than it would take to do the same with a M5. but then again, if you have the dough to buy a new M5, u also have the money to prep it up some more. guess saabs will remain the poor mans race machines. althou the new 95 turbo X is a nice one!

Saab is great dude, it's obvious that you will not be able to race an M5 but come on your car reaches 200 Km/h+ stock and it's WAY WAY WAAAY cheaper, just a few mods and you could kick this guy's ass. Saab it's the best(and the only) that GM has nowadays

for sure that's great fun. i have now put some more power into my saab (it's gone 360.000km now, and still running strong). was racing a seat leon cupra in poland, and that guy couldn't catch up... he also had a surprised look on his face, 2nd, and 3d time i went past him :)

I used to own a bimmer and that rust bucket lemon turned to scrap after the first 10 years of its life. C'mon a $52,000 car should last about 20 years. My now 12 year old saab starts and runs like new, every day and yes its fuken faster than the bmw.

Even with 200 hp I prefer driving my Saab 9000 2.3 Turbo (similar as the one on the movie) with front trtansmission than a BMW 5-series with rear transmission ... Which doesn't mean I wouldn't like to try the BMW ! :)
