a subway system would alleviate much of the traffic. my cousins are taxi drivers in hanoi, and i have been to saigon and hanoi, this is saigon, hanoi is worst
I am going to Vietnam next year for the first time. With traffic like that I really don't know what to do. It is suicide trying to cross the road or riding the bike. Maybe I just go to the country side where there no traffic. Good food is all I am going after and sight seeing. Wish me luck and hope I don't get ran over by a bike.
Timotortrends, definitely don't be concerned about the traffic. It is amazing how well the system works if you simply walk into the traffic and move steadily and predictably. It is a highlight of the vietnam experience. I think the food in the south is much better than in the north, but the north, Hanoi has more charm. You will have a great time! Enjoy!
Yes, it is crazy and actually quite dangerous. In the countryside, they are able to enforce the helmet law, but once they get into the city, all helmets are removed and apparently the police are too overwhelmed to enforce the law.
It is a surprisingly efficient system for handling so much traffic, especially with such a variety of vehicles. Always amazing to me. To get off the island, you just step into the traffic and they will go around you with no problem if you walk slowly and steadily. Quite fun!
Vietnamese population are 87 millions and they have 34 million motobikes + 1.8 million car only. That is why it looks like this. Imagine, If they can change 34 million motobike to 6-7 million car, the city would be ok.... spend 3 thousand for bike is better 25 thousand for car...Infrastructure and economic make people use it.
It is my understanding the the whole city is called Ho Chi Minh City. There are many districts within the city and district 1 is known as Saigon. This roundabout is at the edge of district 1.
locals still call it saigon, overseas vietnamese will always call it saigon, around the world in airports and airlines it is referred to as SGN, plus it sounds catchier than ho chi minh city, eventually its original name, saigon, will return.
Excellent. I hear that the 6 million bike owners of Saigon are hoping to get cars. What will that mean? A destruction derby? Great fun and it seems to work too though crossing the road takes a little courage!

You've probably already been, but just walk slowly across and don't stop - you'll be fine. :)

I was in Ho Chi Minh in May 2009 and if you walk slowly and don't freak out, then you won't get hit.
The food we tried was crap, tough beef and bony chicken. There is a Pizza Hut in Ho Chi Minh and we ate there a few times.

Starting early this year 2008, wearing metal helmet is a law enforced by the police for riding the motorbike.

Looks like the French system, where you yield (if that's what you can call it) after entering the turning circle.
So how did you get off of the island?
