I think almost every guy's been in a similar situation to William Miller. There's been a girl who's got similar charms to Penny and they've had to see that girl come and go.
I reckon that's what makes this scene so brilliant and absorbing. I love this film.
Lucky Trumble is actually the music playing during the 'deflowering' scene. The track here (and I am one who does want this track for my music library) has not yet been released by Nancy Wilson and Cameron Crowe. I wish they would release it, as it seems to be the track that most people remember out of all Wilson's music for the film. I mean, if Nancy can release an album of her tracks from 'Elizabethtown,' why not 'Almost Famous?'
Love this scene! Makes me tear up every time! I work for an airline and the reality that's put into this scene just blows me away! Eastern Airlines did have hubs in both JFK and SAN (San Diego) so they must've had a non-stop flight. Also no one is seated near Penny, and there's no people in any of the airplanes windows but her. Back in the 70's before deregulation, airline travel was outrageously expensive, so there were very few people on planes, not like now.
I have seen this movie ten times...and even now, years after I saw the movie for the first time, I started to cry. Cameron Crowe has a way with movies that I can't even begin to describe.
songs called tiny trumble by nancy wilson the song is on the soundtrack ...theres no tabs for it anywhere =(....this seen reminds me of me n my gf ='(
that look on her face like she is regretting leaving already and getting panicked is beautiful, it makes me cry everytime, like she cant live without him, but she does have to go. great scene and great actress and actor:)
I always took that look of regret as a realization that William is in love with her, and then stopping to mourn the fact that she didn't return the love, at least not in a romantic way. And then of course, the plane takes off, as I suppose it must.
I remember being upset when they didn't start seeing each other or go to Morocco or something, but this ending probably makes more sense...we don't even know how old her character is, and he's only 15. But still, it would have been nice to see them together in the end.
At the same time, I think she finally "gets it," in that she understands William loves her. That alone is really satisfying to me...she'll carry that with her the rest of her life.
oh i LOVE this scene! One of my favourite movies...

Been searching for it myself, without success though.
It's by Cameron Crowe's wife Nancy Wilson (from Heart). Don't know what it's called.

It's some score by Nancy Wilson. Unfortunately, it's difficult to find (my best wishes) and it's not on the soundtrack.

I have the whole score (it was leaked on the internet a while back) - you can usually find it with a search on BitTorrent.
