@Get0utOfTheMatrix This bug had spent the night out in the garage where it was pretty cold. Like most insects, they don't move very well until they warm up a bit, so it was the perfect time to get some great shots of him before he got too active -)
@sanjurodog We've got those around here too - I had a zillion of them come to feast in my decomposing banana timelapse vid XD I guess there are a lot of close contenders for the ugliest bug title! :-)
I see that you say it's about 3 inches long, but it would help to have a form of reference beside him - perhaps a dollar bill! I'd also like to know where this bug is found since potatoes are grown almost all over the world. He's beautiful - thank you!
@onekinkstar This one is between 2 and 3 inches long... there are some other vids where I show it near my hand for scale (v=kyDMkjB4PF0)... Apparently there are lots of species and they are known by many different names. Not why they're called "Potato Bugs" since I don't think they have much (if anything) to do with potatoes! XD
The Potato Bug or Jerusalem Cricket (Stenopelmatus fuscus) is an insect of a masterful design. It is a specialized creation to feed primarily on dead organic matter but can also eat other insects. Their ingenious foot design is used for burrowing beneath moist soil to feed on decaying plant roots and tubers. We can learn a lot from these designs by our loving Creator
I do not think that a "Child of the Earh" is the ugliest insect, I mean what about a fat slimey grubb worm thats much worse to me. I live were the "Child of the Earth" is common and when mature actually have always thought them kinda cute. Oh well we each have our opinion. Love your work thanks for sharing :)
All God's creatures got a place in the choir - er, on the planet. Wish you had some shots of chiggers as I have a poem I want to do with a videoetry! Bet you could provide some catchy music, too!
Very interesting close ups. I am impressed. As I said, I used to see them as a child.. they're less scary now. Wish I had been nicer to them early on..
We used to dig in the dirt all the time, building roads and forts sometimes all day.. so naturally we would run into these guys.. but my male friends would immediately kill them.. saying that they bite. I think it was because they were scared and these guys weren't butterflies. ;)
I don't see anything close to ugli,, I see a baby queen ant or bee just out of the transformation stage, just like a baby to a man,, Ithink is peaceful and beautiful young life, ready to change de world,,like mostly insects do
I have to say that is the ugliest bug I've ever seen in person! LOL When I was a kid, we used to have to get these things out of the pool from time to time. I was so afraid of them! My sisters and I were convinced these things were from outer space and just might send us to the Twilight Zone or to the Outer Limits one day...hahahaha! Now I just see him for what he is, a bug that probably thinks we are from outer space...:-) AMAZING shots as always!
@2darbit He's pretty heavy and a bit clumsy too. He can crawl pretty fast, but is clearly designed for digging rather than climbing or jumping. It does look like he's been eating well though! XD
@TheAelfymade Actually, he's "growling" (didn't make any sound though) at me as a sort of threat, and sometimes just making random tappings with his legs... I tried to time his movements with the music in editing so I'm glad you noticed =) Cheers!
I found one crawling in my bedroom about three days ago. Without doubt, they are UGLY! Actually disgusting. I had to coax him/her into a plastic pitcher.
It is an ugly lil critter. But, the roach is one heck of a nasty thing. Especially the Palmetto in Florida. Omg! They are huge and disgusting. They love to fly in your face. Even had it happen to me, when I was driving to work. lol Oh! But, please, do not make a video on them. Yuck!
@jcmegabyte I did the same thing with a beautiful dragonfly last yr. On a cold morning, it was trying to warm up on my fence so I just walked up to it, gently picked it off the fence, placed it in a sandwich bag and took it into my bio class to share it under a stereoscope. I then put it in a petri dish to keep it from flying away. The students got to see it move it's wonderous huge-eyed head and mouth parts real up close. I kept it in the fridge until stage time.
Yuuck quite revolting. Gives one the heebie jeebies watching it. Wouldn't like to have one of these landing on me!
