The element is named for Strontian, a village in Scotland. The village itself takes its name from “Sròn an t-Sìthein”, which is Scots-Gaelic for “nose (or point) of the faerie hill”. Strontium was first isolated from mineral specimens taken from a mine in the area. Given the date of the element’s discovery, those specimens were doubtless collected using hand tools, like picks and chisels. So it can be said that Strontium is probably the only element discovered through nose-picking...
On 10 October 1957, the graphite core of a British nuclear reactor at Windscale, Cumberland (now Sellafield, Cumbria) caught fire, releasing substantial amounts of radioactive contamination into the surrounding area. The event, known as the Windscale fire, was the worst nuclear accident in Great Britain. Strontium 90 was everywhere

I heard about a power plant in the south of England being used to breed plutonium in the 70's. I cant remember what the cause was but some radioactive isotopes of Strontium and Caesium were released, landing on farm land in the surrounding area and being eaten by dairy cattle. A cation exchange resin was used to reduce strontium levels, but this also removed all the calcium. The treated milk was then dilluted and sold with milk from around the UK so everyone had a small dose of Strontium 90.
@dharmafreak He doesn't seem to be developing atomic weapons, cheaper dirtier nuclear intercontinenal ballistic missiles seem to be his weapon of choice.
great video.

Well.. To be more accurate we use Strontium Nitrate in pyrotechnics. Same as Barium Nitrate (green).

I'm pretty sure that, if he wanted to, the Professor could use his vast knowledge of chemistry to single-handedly destroy the entire universe.

Don't worry, with the nutjob North Koream leader there'll be plenty of new Strontium-90 realeased all over the world soon!
