Yes everyone makes mistakes, what he did was a mistake, he might never do it again. But if beating your partner was "just a mistake" like "I forgot to take the garbage out" or "I left someone I should not have", it wouldn't be a crime unlike the other things. The "crime" part indicates that it takes a certain kind of person to do it, a certain level of cruelty and a lack of judgement. I would find it a lot easier to not see him as a woman beater if he stopped feeling so damn sorry for himself.
