I'd like to know what ultimately happened to the house. I think more than just the roof was destroyed, I think the house was completely demolished... And the person who survived in the basement, boy was he lucky...
I lived right down the street. It was a house full of illegal Mexicans I think there was about 20 that lived in the house. Unfortunately they all perished in the tornado. If you look closely you can see a few of them flying out of the house.
Shame shame shame!!! Ohhh the horrible shame xD I didn't make fun of the bid but it's funny as hell when people proclaim shame upon eachother hahaha :)
To anyone who thinks this video is a fake, call the Weather Channel. Or go to their website. Because this video first appeared there. I'm sure it was very, VERY real. Especially for the people who own that house (and many others in the area around Parkersburg, IA). And to those who joke about it - even if it happened three years ago - shame on you! And let's put you all on a plane for Northeastern Japan for, oh, say a year or so... Right near Fukushima...
I always wondered about the people who lived in that house - if they got out or were in a storm shelter or basement. I've seen this video elsewhere (along with the bank that was badly damaged where the film was shot from). The tornado was officially declared an F5...
Change the method of construction and the house will survive, but if you keep building weak houses, then families will lose everything. When will humans get smart? Sure it will cost more to build a strong house, but you only need to build it once. Break away from conventional construction designs and survive.
Based on the description I've read of damage to the bank from which this was shot the house probably took EF2 damage, which typically is loss of the roof .
Along other parts of the damage path of this tornado, which was rated EF5, houses built to some of the best standards of construction were swept clean off their foundations.
Even if a house isn't completely destroyed by a strong tornado (EF2 or higher) it is often rendered uninhabitable regardless of construction quality.
@dragonridley, The failure of your argument is the assumption of the adequacy of building homes up to "some of the best standards of construction". Where is it written that standards of construction cannot be exceeded and homes could be built to survive previously witnessed destructive conditions? To paraphrase Albert Einstein, "If you keep building to code, you will keep seeing failure, but if you improve on the code, then you might see success."
@kulto1986 stop making crappy (maybe shitty) Chuck Norris jokes. These people's lives were effected forever. And all you say is a shitty (yes now it is shitty) Chuck Norris joke. You people pitty me. Tisk Tisk

@TheHadesShade I beg to differ. I live in Waterloo which was just a few miles east of there. I have friends that live there and know a lot of people that still haven't moved on from then. Of course they are rebuilding, but starting over is hard. I love Chuck Norris jokes but come on guys. Know when to draw the line.
my parents try to convince me i'm safe during a tornado if i'm in the basement. i say they're wrong. when a tornado this big even goes near the house, YOU ARE FUCKED. period.
All American houses in Tornado Alley are useally made of wood. Better use some enforced concrete next time, a solid concrete roof ankered to the walls. This building was very weak.
a decent british house made from bricks and solid roof tile wouldnt of suffered as much. that house was probably blown off its foundation and all the bits of wood it was made out of where blown to the other side of town leaving a rather expensive mess. then the stupid yanks rebuild them out of MDF and ply board again.
The house probably to EF2/EF3 damage as that is about what the bank across the street from it took, so it probably was left on its foundation with some collapsed walls.
Nearer the center of this tornado winds reached EF5 intensity. An EF4/ EF5 tornado will demolish a brick house just as well as any other.

@FASSY524 I don't want to argue, really - but Washington has more tornadoes than even I thought they did - google "Washington Tornadoes 1880-2000" and more severe storms than what I thought as well: "A severe tornado strikes Vancouver, Washington, killing six and injuring more than 300, on April 5, 1972" There are also YT videos of Washington tornadoes.
