Im excited...ive booked the ferry to go over and see my BF this August, for 2 whole weeks. If I could, I would move there, with my daughter...but I have such a great job in Ontario. Ive heard nothing but terrific things about NFLD the people, the landscape (is like Ireland) the food, the culture. I cant wait..its a trip of a lifetime.
This video really grabs you. Check out a tune I worte for the province in my videos called "Breathe the Air" for a song describing NL and some great scenic shots!
drive a hour to feel like your in a totally different place. It's simply amazing. I know there are other amazing places in the world has well which I would dearly love to see someday. But seriously come to Newfoundland for the experience of a lifetime. It is simply amazing and beautiful and unique!!
I was born in Newfoundland. I have only left the province once when I was a infant, so that count. Even though I never left this island of beauty somehow I know im blessed to be born and raised here. Our magical culture, food and beautiful scenery. This is the place God first had planned to make the garden of Eden. lol But seriously if you wanted to visit a culurally rich place look no further. I live here and I myself think NL is amazing. You could go shopping in St. Johns and
@Speed6633 Im planning of traveling to NL in late July 2010. Any tips? What do i need o know that i wont find on the tourism sites. Ive been reading heavy for two weeks and im burnt out! Nobody knows the area bettter than a local. I know, cause i live in an area thats triples in population in the summer with tourists...Long island, NY near the hamptons...damn tourists! Now i am one...lol!
@pciochetto I'd avoid St. John's and try to stick to driving around the island and explore. You could always also try Cornerbrook... it's much less touristy, but is an amazing city with a lot to do.
I think it is one of the most beautiful and laid back places I have ever been. It is only about an hour away from Gros Morne National Park which is an amazing place. Trail systems run through town, a short drive out of town and you can be in the bush.
Please ignore atlanticeagle's comments. If you are going to Newfoundland, seeing St. John's is a must. St John's is a Celtic city with mutlinational tastes, many fine restaurants offering local and international cuisine. Corner Brook is beautiful but doesn't have the variety of scenery or the amenities of St John's. Actually, you should try to see as much of the island as possible. You won't regret it!
@spitfire9b funny you should respond now after 3 months. Cause we moved up the trip and will be in Port Aux Basques mon morning. We tried to avoid the black flies and we wanted to see icebergs although it looks like we will have to go to St Anthonys for that. We were hoping to avoid the Northern peninsula and save some travel time. Only a few bergs in Twillngate and the other town west of there the name escapes me. We"ll be kayaking with stan cook on tues or wed and gros morne by sat the12
Black flies in NFLD are nothing compared to those in Northern Ontario. The black flies there are so big that one landed on my window ledge one night & kicked in my window screen, lol.
Gros Morne is beautiful. The 10th century Viking settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows is fascinating (too bad Canada refused to issue any commemorative coins or stamps in 2000 for the 1000th anniversary of this world heritage site, but we did get one for Canadian Tire's 75th anniversary).
Sadly, this is the only province in Canada that I haven't seen...yet! Perhaps I've just saved the best for last :D. Having met many "Newfie's"...I must say that there are no better embassadors of sincere kindness/friendliness to be found....honestly!
Hi, for those of you who want to see more of Newfoundland, can check documentary film I made during my visit in summer of 2007. I didn't find any movie online for free so I made this one and posted it. just search for "Newfoundland through eyes of a foreigner" and you will get links to youtube trailer where you can find link to official website in the description on right side, too.
Newfoundland is a place that captures your heart and fills a part of your soul. I have been to many places in the world, but there's something so very special about it. Its not wide open spaces, serene views, clean air, or genuine people. Its something more that if you get, you love, but if you don't you, just never will.
I am a Newfoundlander, going to school in Quebec (not because of poor schools or anything, because I wanted to learn French) I love my home! It is beautiful, calm, relaxing, unquestionably one of the most beautiful and unique places on this earth!
If you haven't visited, you really should! I am not saying this as a plead nor am I preaching. I just want people to be able to wake up and see the true beauty that I am blessed to see everyday.
Clear one clip of caribou which could have been taken in Labrador (but not necessarily), I do not think the focus was on Labrador as much as it was on Newfoundland.
Alot at the start was geared towards the financially-backed Viking marketing angle, as St. Brendan and his crew visiting the Northern Penn. many many MANY moons before the Vikings just doesn't draw the tourists the way those Vikings do @ L'anse aux Meadows.
man, i'm an american. there, i said it. my wife is an islander from pei.
everywhere you go it
is different. i think canada is amazing. newfoundland, nova scotia, pei, new brunswick(never been to the priairies, or west coast) but seriously......every part of every country has it's differences. it's all different parts of the world, which is, if i do say so, simply amazing. embrace cultural differences. or at least, recognize....is it that hard...?
God willing I will make it home for good some day!! There is no place like Nfld ...as you can see I am old school newf...I HATE the new NL ...its Nfld!!! Now, stays where ye to, I'll come to where yer at my son!!
nfld income growth is becoming richer and richer like BRAVENEWFY said. and lizcan nfld isnt really like new zealand. in most ways. no doubut is has a rich history. the first ever transalantic cable was layed in hearts content, and it know for being the closest to ireland. blessed with rich fishing grounds. and when it doesnt rain, the sunny days are breath-taking. even living here all my life. i enjoy it! were the only piece of land that has out own time zone!
I would LOVE to visit newfoundland.... I am researching about it.. IT looks GORGEOUS.. and I am very excited to go there and meet the people of newfoundland! I work with a lady from newfoundland and omg she is hillarious and SOO nice! the sayings that come out of her mouth are just so funny... I saw a commercial for NL on tv.. and i was like oh this has to be like New Zealand or something.. and at the end it said NL.. I was like WOW.. Thats where I am going next.. for sure.!!!!!!!!! I'm PUMPED!
im open minded person i lived in alot of different places in world (east and west) n now im doing my schools in Corner Brook I was just surprised how close minded ppl r here Newfoundland needs diversity in order to grow n to catch up to the rest of canada
umalin, I'm not sure if you know much about our history, but this province has been through a lot, financially. The ability to expand has been too hard, and with little help from our government, as a rule(it would seem), we've been literally on the side lines for a long time.
As it stands, I think this kept our culture strong. It's not close minded, it's unassuming and genuine. And as far as I can see, it's a rarity these days.
yeah i guess in financial terms mostly. norway and iceland seem a lot more prosperous and developed, tons less backwaterish looking even in the rural of areas, compared to nfld's fishy shacks and what not. and really? wtf that's sad and pretty immature. well what is your ethnicity? and why did you move there? wow what's winter like there?
Im doing fast track BN prog. which means the whole nursing degree in 2 years rather then 4 years (like in winterpeg), winter here is not that bad like Prairies but its wet , im not saying that Nfld ppl r racists but they were not exposed to other cultures my roommate was shocked when i would her i don't celebrate xmas (im an atheist)
yeah, it's not that they're bad hostile racist people, they're just a bit culturally sheltered, or in their case isolated. hey wow just becoz you're an atheist doesn't mean you have no right to celebrate christmas! i'm an atheist too, but i celebrate it with tons of pride. it's about the spirit of giving. it's not about jeeeesus anymore. you're taking part in being a jehovah's witness by not celebrating it haha. is it boring living there? what do you do for fun?
Hope you don't mind me butting in on the conversation, but i totally agree with you guys. I moved here a few years ago, and it's REALLY surprising at not just how socially backwards it is here, but how nearly nobody realizes it. Sure it's beautiful and a great place to visit, but day to day life is... not necessarily boring, but painful when you realize that we don't even have recycling pickup. Or sewage treatment for tha matter.
Perhaps before you call an entire population socially backwards & ignorant you should come to know the financial & socioeconomic situation NL has been in until recently.
Now that we are no longer in that situation both of the things you mentioned will be coming online in the next year or 1.
I would hope that you have the courage to stand by your comments and tell the friends you have here what you think of them and their neighbors, and ask them to give you a history lesson about this province.
blehh, i've been. physically it's like a bleak and watered down mix of ireland and norway... not quite as pretty as either one of the two. not exactly full of open minded and cultured people that you'd find in ireland or norway. sorry to be an ass, but maybe newfoundlanders need to see the world before they brag? and get over the little drug and drinking problems i've heard of... not much to do there but take in the scenery and enjoy lobster.
disappointed you should not be... This is Newfoundland, you are in a place where there is not many difrient cultural people are to. St. John's on the other hand has a lot of different cultures. Remember Newfoundland was not really exposed to many cultures its only the past few years a lot of people has been coming to Newfoundland and sure like any where there will be a moment for getting use to other cultures.
It was only a few years ago People started to come from around the world to Newfoundland. Before that you would never hardly see someone from another culture. Hope that clears up some for yeah :)
What shacks? Are you refering to the Stages and sheds(Fishing stores)? I think its a great video that shows old St John's and the NL coastline very well. Naturally a tourism video is not going to show a housing sub division out in Cowen highs somewhere.
One big thing I hate about these stupid tourism sites.. they show the worst part of the island, and then makes Newfoundlanders look really poor. I live in Newfoundland, in the captial city, and im not poor I live in a house not a shack like the one's in the videos.
You idiot, I mean that we dont live in shacks like they show in this god damn video. You dont have to be a dick about it. Do I live in a shack like in the video's? No of course not. Stfu
The last thing that came to my mind was 'poor'. It looks absolutely beautiful and mesmerizing and rich of culture. Definitely the next "must visit" place in my books.
but you see, the shacks are part of what make us unique, people like coming here because they feel a sense of ease , they feel that people here aren't as materialistic as the rest of north america..they see us as being laid back..who needs a hummer when they can fall asleep to the sound of the waves.
My pen pal from newfoundland once wrote this about newfoundland and canada... AND I'M NOT MAKING THIS UP!. "We Newfoundlanders are embarrassed to be lumped in with Canadians Often when you see a Newfoundlander with a Mainlander (typical Canadian), the Canadian will end up doing something that will embarrass the Newfoundlander for being seen in public with the nice but slow Canadian."
It's sad that some Canadians see Newfoundlanders like this...I am from New Brunswick(Canada)and would love to live there...They keep their old(mostly Irish)customs fresh an' alive...Just look at Kitchen party's!
wtf we dont hunt baby seals so get ur facts straight before u start making accusations abut us newfoundlanders and we wont give up the seal hunt its one of our oldest traditons
Well why does the guy below me say, "go worrie about the rest of canada polluting the enviorment and comeing into our waters and fishing it all out on us the only good fishery we got is seals"

It's sad that some Canadians see Newfoundlanders like this...I am from New Brunswick(Canada)and would love to live there...They keep their old(mostly Irish)customs fresh an' alive...Just look at Kitchen party's!
