That is a real Post horn with valves. The original post horns were without valves, much like the cor de chasse. Post horns were originally used for what the name refers to...the post. It announced the arrival or departure of the post rider or mail coach. Used for this purpose primarily in the 18th and 19th century.

@pastrychef1985 in modern performance they substitute it with a trumpet played offstage, but the horn is definitely sound nicer =)
