Gadd didn't want to give up being a studio musician for touring, so Lenny came on board and did a great job with them. At least that is the way I heard it.

Steve Gadd had just come out of the army at this time and was looking for work, and conners was living in Hicksville,Long island.

The drummer is so off; like he's trying to play over everyone and upstage the music.

Connors goes into his solo and Gadd can't lay back ...trying to fill every space. Overplayed.

Gadd goes BOOM CHUNK where he should softly float and then many harsh beats where a simple part is best. Uuugh.

I rather think that at this time Lenny simply didn't have time so Corea found someone to replace him for a few shows.

( STEELAPLETON sent me this info) .After the first 2 RTF albums with airto, flora, and joe farrel, chick was looking to put together an electric version of return to forever. stanley introduced chick to lenny white in san francisco. lenny was definitely on board, but couldn't make the trip back east due to some commitments he needed to finish with. so chick toured with steve gadd as a temp drummer until lenny was free to join.
