Do you have any tips for raising a wood duck? Yesterday I saved a wood duck hatchling from being run over on the road. I searched all over trying to find it's mother and was unable to do so. I even searched again today because I now know they don't nest on the ground, but still didnt find her. I bought some duck starter feed from the tractor supply, and a feed and water thing for the duck. Currently it is living in the spare bathroom bathtub, with towel, grass, a heat lamp.
@tabbikat86 (This is Whereducky under a different account)
Sounds like you have a great setup! I throw some mealworms and lettuce into their diet occasionally but the meal should be fine. Make sure it has a chance to swim now and then but doesn't stay wet until it has feathers. Luckily they grow quickly and are almost adult by 2 months. Hope your baby is doing ok!
Please let the ducklings first sight be their mother instead of human. Otherwise it will treat the human as their parents. You can test it. If you fly a light aircraft those ducks will fly with you.
what do you feed them? I have a wood duckling, but he wont eat the chick starter I have. I've kept him alive with crickets, but I cant afford to by 50 crickets a day. Please help!
I have raised mallard ducklings for 5 years now and have 4 juvies right now. But my neighboor kids found a wood duckling on the side of the road and brought it to me so now i have a wild wood duckling who doesnt like it when i pick him up till he is in my hand and sleeping lol. I got him a mallard duckling for a friend to keep him company today and they seem to really get along so far... lets hope for the best of Milo(wood duck) and Otis(mallard duck)
Wonderful video. Great job! A friend's parents found a baby Wood duck yesterday that's about a day old at the most. No sign of the 'family' so they brought it to us (we just raised some baby chickens). It is just toooooo cute and doing fine so far. Fingers crossed. :)
Wow! I love woodducks! I rescued a baby one about two days old from the highway, but it was so traumatized it died in my hands a few days later, I really miss her! I almost cried.
I had mallard ducks and they looked just like that when they are babies! So next year we are gonna get wood ducks!!! well not just because they look alike but we wanna try something new!
Breeders and hatcheries often sell them to be kept domestically, though sometimes they require a permit. Depending on where you live, you can order them from companies like Stromberg's chicks and gamebirds, or mcMurray's. I'd recommend looking for breeders in your area. (Feed stores are often a good place to start looking.)
good job! ims o happy that some people are successful. i found some ducks nesting and i didnt remove it, but i helped it hatch 8 ducklings out of 9 eggs, but they all disappeared after one day. they were at a playground, and im pretty sure someone took the ducklings. =( the ducks sibling is having another nest of eggs right now, and i really hope that this duck will be successful. but good job on raising those adorable ducklings, and helping them grow up well. =]
I love this video. You did a great job! I incubated and raised wood ducks last year and whenever I miss them, I watch your video! Once again, great job!
I don't bother to sex them until they're about a month and a half old, when their plumage starts coming in. Females have more speckles and less white. Males get raspy voices while females are loud. Later the males get bright red eyes and start to change plumage colors (at about 3 months). Before that, it's difficult to tell. (Sorry I missed this comment before!) And thank you.
@Whereducky: Plus after raising a few broods you can start to tell before their plumage changes. For instance, when they're around the phase in minute 2:45 or so of your clip, I can tell the males from the females. The males start getting the white "chin strap" and their bills start to change colors just a little bit at the base, whereas the females don't get the chin strap, but start getting the white spots near their eyes. I think it is like you said, around 4-6 weeks old...
Please help, I recently found a very young woodduck in our pond. In the woodduck box was 1 dead baby and 1 just hatched. we put them together and placed them under a light in a box. We could not get them to eat. the oldest died and the other one died 3 days later. I know there will be more situations in which we will find duck so could you let me in on your tricks. It broke my heart but I do feel if I had left them alone a predator would have taken their life. I love your video. Kackee
oh shut up who really cares what they did was perfectly fine... they did nothing wrong, they where trying to save some ducks.let me guess your a enviromentalist... people like you get on my nerves so much who cares what he did with the ducks.. so how do you like duck farms, they use those for eating!

Did the ducklings know how to dive instinctively or is that a learned behavior?
I can't imagine a wood duck that doesn't spend half it's time under water...just curius.

I agree, some people are just plain dumb, or in-sufficently odd. They have the nerve to comment or tell people the wrong facts, or the non-truth.

Not true. Many people raise animals and then help them sucessfully become non-domestic.
