I think the largest ship in the world is the Ti Europe, a tanker with a length of 380m, but a tonnage much larger then the Emma Maersk.

It was converted into a FSO (Floating Storage and Offloading vessel). This means as a laid up ship. They converted the ship 'cause it wasn't very profitable for the owner, but they didn't wanted to get rid of it.

That's not the main reason though.. The main reason for it's retirement is the fact that it's a single-hull carrier, which means that it's getting harder and harder for ships like that to sail in certain waters. Mainly because of the Exxon Valdez incident. Since then, single hull carriers have been phased out gradually
