Byron Janis is great. And he's given great accompaniment by conductor Paul Paray. We don't have nearly enough documentation of these two wonderful artists on video. Thanks to French Television for digging into their vaults and releasing this super performance.
To think, we have this piece of history. Imagine if we had this technology of getting these famouse composers 500 years ago? Imagine, finding out what Back, Mozart, Beethoven, Listz really intended on what their music wanted to sound like.
I was fortunately enough to see Janis play the Rach. 3rd in person back in the early 80's when he was just starting to regain his ability to play. He looked somewhat stiff in the shoulders(probably from the arthritis)but sounded like he never heard of arthritis!
I do have the Paganini Rhaps...it is on the same EMI DVD as this Prok.3rd. There is a fabulous Janis version (Prok.#3,3rd mvt only) on VAI (in color)..One of the best pianistic performances ever, IMO! I was able to see Janis play "live" years ago. Sublime/ultimate artist. Psoriatic arth. shortened his immortal career.
Hi. Can you please tell me what is VAI? I'd like to get this but don't know where to look for it. Thanks - Perhaps you can leave me a message here. Thanks.
I have Janis's LP and CD with Kondrashin too, but the differences are more interesting: with Kondrashin, tempos were much faster. Here, with Paray, things are a bit less harried. In the end I think this may be the preferred performance.

The best performance there is:
Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Daniele Gatti
Yuja Wang, piano
Sergei Prokofjev: Pianoconcert nr.3 op.26
Concertgebouw Amsterdam

Does anyone have a video of Janis playing the Rachmaninoff Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini video?

It's good to have this Janis video. It's a fine performance, as was his LP (later released on CD). Janis was one of the greats from his generation.

I have Byron's LP with Kondrashin--and the similar hallmarks are apparent here as well.
