you don't even need to spin it to make it uh... spin (=p)
if you tap it on one end lightly - enough to make it rattle - it spins on it's own.
(meaning I agree with Kkinsane, it's the oscillations that causes it. that, and an off-centre pivot)

It's due to the instability on the axis, that's why it vibrates when spinning the wrong direction and that's why it turns and start spinning the other way.
