@UglySean Actually, the main songwriter for the Archies was Jeff Barry - Sugar Sugar and another hit Jingle Jangle were CO-written by Andy Kim and Jeff Barry
Why didn't they film this recording session back in 1969? Such a loss of history. The Beatles filming everything and this pop song which hangs with anything pop the Beatles put out is just lost to us as just "session singers". Both are and were super photogenic. Would have loved seeing a live video of this song from 1969.
I just love this type of historical stuff! Why oh why did they not film these recordings back in 1969? You have the Beatles filming everything back then giving us a massive historical record and yet, this moment in time of this beautiful pop tune with these two beautiful vocalists is lost forever. Toni Wine is just so special. Love her voice and her songwriting ability.
They weren't actually "the Archies" ,rather session musicians and singers hired by Don Kirshner (Monkees fame) to record songs for a TV cartoon show and release them without ackowledgement or roaylities. Don hated live musicians/ singers who would back chat and argue with him
The current Beatles song out at the time was "The Ballad of John & Yoko" but it only reached #8.That was the only Beatles single on Apple records that didn't go to #1
That was probably because many stations refused to play "Ballad of John and Yoko" because they thought the line "Christ, you know it ain't easy" was blasphemous.
Wow. Glad I stumbled on this! Ron Dante has always been one of my heroes. So many hits, yet so little recognition. And Toni Wine! Gene Pitney told me she sang on "It Hurts To Be In Love" with him after they borrowed the track from Neil Sedaka.
So much to comment.. Toni was introduced from audience at Riveria Hotel, Vegas, when Dante & Andy Kim put on great concert, approx 2004. He didn't even SAY she'd made this record with him! We sat spellbound as Ron played hit after hit he'd made.
Yeppers...and my 1969 lunchbox...my Archie albums are proudly framed...so many pimply faced memories...in your face Rolling Stones and Beatles...SUGAR SUGAR was a MONSTER HIT!!!
I couldn't get the cereal box records to play right even back then. I put a coin on them so they wouldn't slip. And, didn't they play at 16 rpm? How many of those turntables are still around?
i had "boys and girls" by the archies - back of post alpha-bets box! met ron dante, such a nice guy. my absolute favorite archies song is "jingle jangle". for me, nothing tops it.
The 2 emcees swaying together in the beginning is hilarious. Typical live TV mix has somebody too loud and/or too low; in this case, Ron is too low & Toni too loud.
Did Ron write it and Andy perform it or the other way around? Their voices are similar. The "Billboard Book of Number One Hits" credits this to Ron Dante.
"Sugar, Sugar" was written by Jeff Barry and Andy Kim, with Jeff producing the track. Ron Dante and Toni Wine provided the vocals. Andy actually did record the song a few years later, under the name Baron Longfellow. Yes - when you hear those early recordings by Andy Kim and compare them with Ron Dante and The Archies, they do sound quite similar. For the longest time, I thought Andy was the voice of The Archies.
I like the song, but I think they should have rehearsed more times, with someone directing them. They could bring more harmony if she sang less loud. I would like it more if the instruments made some sounds they are doing with their voices (as in the record)
I saw her in concert with Tony Orlando at Fallsview Casino, a few weeks ago. I loved the way each person in the band got a chance to shine, and she was great! But for me, the neatest thing was finding out that she sang the Meow Mix jingle...and hearing her give us a sample of it. I'm a voice artist (among other things) myself, so that was one of the highlights of my night! The other was getting a kiss from Tony during the show, when I gave him some "yellow ribbon" rhinestoned pasties I'd made!
Toni is substituting the keyboard part with that annoying "babababababa" and it doesn't sound right. The keyboard part is crucial to the song. She's good otherwise here. It's cool to see Dante still singing this.
Wow, that's cool! Yes, Toni has the best pipes in the business. I've heard several of her solo recordings from back in the day. Very soulful voice. She and Ron Dante have known each other for years, from before The Archies. I have a scan of a photo taken of them with Don Kirshner in 1963.
I've always enjoyed this song, including the Wilson Pickett version, but the Archies hit single was, for me, the definitive cut. It was really cool seeing the people who performed, behind the cartoon voices, the songs made popular by this studio group.
It's a shame that artist don't get the recognition they deserved, this song was very popular in Chile-South America, because the cartoons. I remember everybody liked this song, back then I was a child and I never knew it was a real person who sung this song I thought was Archies the cartoons that sung the song, because I didn't have any information concern the real singer, I new about The Beattles, The Monkees, Elvies Presley and many others artist, but not about Ron Dante.
Seriously, lots of people seems to forget that Don Kirshner was instrumental in the creation of the Monkees (1966) and the Archies (1969), both highly manufactured, but hugely successful groups, both on record and on TV. It was the success of the Archies that gave Kirshner enough capital to launch Kirshner Entertainment Corporation. After the Archies ran their course, Kirshner formed Don Kirshner Productions in 1972 to produce "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert".
No, Ron Dante was lead vocalist and did many of the backgrounds as well. Andy MAY have sung some backgrounds, and he co-wrote many of the group's songs with Jeff Barry, including "Sugar, Sugar."
According to a Ron Dante interview, Andy Kim had written about a half a dozen of The Archies songs, but he never actually sang on any of the records, although he was still a big influence on them(The Archies).
Love it! Ron Dante & Toni Wine - very nice to see the real Archies actually performing onstage. This is great! Thanks so much for uploading this video!!!
