CNN article 09/23/08:Although Democratic vp candidate Joe Biden routinely mocks his Republican counterpart, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, for her onetime support of the infamous "Bridge to Nowhere," Biden and his running mate voted to keep the project alive twice. Both Biden and Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama voted to kill a Senate amendment that would have diverted federal funding for the bridge to repair a Louisiana span badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina, Senate records show.
Actually, McCain voted AGAINST the original bloated transportation bill that included the earmark. Then there was a vote on an amendment to kill that one earmark and send the money to Louisiana for Katrina relief -- Obama and Biden voted AGAINST that amendment. McCain wasn't present for the vote.
this simply sucks. I think the cost analysis based off of loonie journalist with political agenda is the worst thing that can happen.
I think bridge linking an island with 7000 people with mainland and "brodge to nowhere" is a vast difference. Now, if for instance these 7000 people happen to own any significan land in the vicinity, that brings to our country coffers untold riches, denying them bridge is a national tragedy.
Well, not since the video was uploaded, but I bet comments and views will double since this past week, so... first comment since anyone has ever heard of the 'bridge to nowhere'?? maybe??
Ketchikan has more than eight thousand permanent residents, and upwards of 20,000 during the peak tourism and fishing seasons in the summer. Also, the ferry he's on comes once every thirty minutes. I guess he didn't have time to mention that. The bridge is excessive, as most people in Southeasat feel, but the nickname "Bridge to Nowhere" is silly and unfortunate.
If the argument is over the cost, then why does this video not compare the cost of building, maintaining and replacing the ferries over the life of the bridge? If it was cheaper to run the ferry this would be a key point in the argument not to build a bridge. However it seems this is not the case.
What about the cost of maintaining a bridge of that size? Beyond a shadow of a doubt it would cost more money per year to maintain the bridge then maintain the ferries. Hell you could buy a couple new ferries every year and it still would be cheaper then building and maintaining a bridge of this size. Think about it
Didn't the senate demand that Stevens give the money back or something? I heard he like flipped out about it, too, and it was recorded. Does anybody know where the link for that would be? I love watching Ted Stevens get all worked up over nothing to nowhere.
Ted Stevens was a NutCase when he was Governor of Alaska, he hasn't changed one bit since then. As a matter of fact the entire Alaska delegation on Capitol Hill are Pork Barrel PIGS and the rest of America is paying for it.
All politicians are in on the scam to grab taxpayers money. Voting doesn't make a difference, since there is only one party, traitors.

the bridge doesn't connect ketchikan with the mainland, but with another island that has the airport on it.

People who use the ferry pay to ride it.
Luckily they canceled the bridge.

You think it costs somewhere near 250 million to upkeep 2 ferries? For what, 1000 years?

Seen him rant on the floor of Congress, it was on a Bill Moyers PBS show.
They dropped the bridge idea but the earmarks still stand
Alaska gets $148 mil for highway projects, Louisiana $75 mil to repair a bridge ruined in Katrina.
My mom and dad live in New Orleans and I vist alot and it's it's bad.

Amazing. Most people I know are worrying about paying their gas bills this winter. How narrow minded of them.
It would be cheaper to buy each of the 50 people on the island a boat.
