  • Metronome ftw!

  • I saw an ad in the paper for this and really wanted to go but couldn't. still not managed to see them live yet and gonna miss the 2 uk dates this year too :(

  • what album is this on?

  • @D0RAtheDESTROYA It is on the Lincoln album - although the record version is quite different.

  • I had the Lincoln cassette for years before I really gave this song a serious listen- man was I missing out before that. One of my favorite TMBG songs.

  • I know the lyrics are terrifying, but Flansburgh's guitar is just so peppy!

  • Thank you so much for these videos, astralbee, these shows happened before I was born, so I never really got to experience the original TMBG setup. I've seen them twice already, and thought they were amazing with the full band, but nothing beats this. Thanks again.

  • One of my favourites. Thanks for posting, Astralbee!

  • I was at that Gig great to see again thank you for posting.

  • Pure amazing TMBG bliss. Favorited, and repeat watched. Thanks for putting this up on the internets.

  • as beautiful as the lincoln version is i love this more...

also holy crap flans looked great in '90, arguably better than before and after

  • do they have an album with the version of the song on it?

i've got the one that has the other version

but this is like more upbeat

    i like it

  • No, but one of the official TMBG podcasts does contain a studio recording of this arrangement.

  • terrible aqusticks but good song.

  • the begining guitar is like....classic tmbg

  • 1 word..."LINNYGASM"

  • FLANSGASM

  • heh. Reallylol!

  • Love this song. Love this version of it too.

Makes me miss dial a song even more.

  • This is the most lyrically disturbing song ever.

  • Explain.

  • Yes it is. Isn't it wonderful?

  • Honestly, I don't think people appreciate how incredibly disturbing this song's lyrics are. They're so disturbing, so good, that they make this my favorite TMBG's song - ever.

  • I think real TMBG fans completely appreciate the creepiness of this song. And it is definitely one of my favorites.

  • @Papposilenos Absoutely! The true essence of That Which Is Truly Giant is about cognitive dissonance. Observe "Hopeless Bleak Despair", which is a song of joy; and the manic delight of the doomed in "Turn Around". I could be more comprehensive in my list, but 240 characters remaining. :-)

  • @Papposilenos I love the term "real TMBG fans." For some reason that spoke to me.

  • @pianoman930 Yeah man, there are some people who like the music. There are some people who love the music. And then there are some people who just seem to "get it" at a core level.

  • Of course it's momento mori but a lot of TMBG's songs have that theme.

  • Have you heard "Stomp Box?"

  • Love that song.

  • @Born2bRedeemed That is one of my favs too =]

  • THIS IS AWESOME!!!!!:D

  • Wow. I didn't think much of this when i first heard it, but i really like it now, the chorus sounds so much better in this live version!

  • Is there an MP3 of this version?

  • Podcast 33A, you can get something similar. No metronome, Linnell's on a keyboard, and Flansburgh's on an acoustic. Free 192k Stereo MP3 on iTunes. Very first song on the podcast too.

  • Thanks =D My computer doesn't let me download Itunes or the like so I hope I can find it.

  • Look up Podcast 33A on TMBW(dot)net, you can get a direct download there.

  • Thankyou Mr. Jason ^_^

  • No problem!

  • Yes, thank you! It's very similar to this one, and I like it better than the "regular" version. :) :) :)

  • They are just amazing, these guys are genius!!

  • GUH. FLANSBURGH'S ARMS.

  • I'm in love.

  • These guys are just pure genius!! I love TMBG!!

  • the album version of this song might be my alltime favorite song by them.

  • I prefer this version to the one on Lincoln.

  • I like both, but the more I hear-- the better. I want an MP3 of this version! :)

  • Way better than the album version. So quirky and pretty. :)

  • In this performance they prove extremely resourceful and they also beautify the image of a band lacking conventional accompaniment. I'd like to see them release a studio version of this song with all its starkness left in, especially the metronome's introduction.

  • The most amazing performance of this song... EVER!

  • I LOVE that line. "Every jumbled pile of person has a thinking part that wonders what the part that isn't thinking isn't thinking of." genius.

  • Why didn't I go to this show? I'm still kicking myself, but it's cool to see a clip on here. One of my fav songs of theirs, but I prefer the album version with the acoustic chorus.I love that part.

  • I think i like this better than the album version, but that's probably because i've heard the album version so many times...

  • Love this song...

Someone's in the kitchen with Dinah! ;)

  • hm weird, Linnell is singing the harmony for the "...a part of you is hovering" part and Flans is singing the lead.

    -Jordan

  • No, Linnell is singing the lead here. That's how the song has always been...

  • Nooope....Linnell is singing the harmony for that part. Flans is quietly singing the lead.

    -Jordan

  • Oh, gotcha, I kinda misread the comment I guess. Flans generally always sings lead for that part when they play the song fast, though; he did it on the original Dial-A-Song demo and on 120 Minutes.
