I saw an ad in the paper for this and really wanted to go but couldn't. still not managed to see them live yet and gonna miss the 2 uk dates this year too :(
I had the Lincoln cassette for years before I really gave this song a serious listen- man was I missing out before that. One of my favorite TMBG songs.
Thank you so much for these videos, astralbee, these shows happened before I was born, so I never really got to experience the original TMBG setup. I've seen them twice already, and thought they were amazing with the full band, but nothing beats this. Thanks again.
Honestly, I don't think people appreciate how incredibly disturbing this song's lyrics are. They're so disturbing, so good, that they make this my favorite TMBG's song - ever.
@Papposilenos Absoutely! The true essence of That Which Is Truly Giant is about cognitive dissonance. Observe "Hopeless Bleak Despair", which is a song of joy; and the manic delight of the doomed in "Turn Around". I could be more comprehensive in my list, but 240 characters remaining. :-)
@pianoman930 Yeah man, there are some people who like the music. There are some people who love the music. And then there are some people who just seem to "get it" at a core level.
Podcast 33A, you can get something similar. No metronome, Linnell's on a keyboard, and Flansburgh's on an acoustic. Free 192k Stereo MP3 on iTunes. Very first song on the podcast too.
In this performance they prove extremely resourceful and they also beautify the image of a band lacking conventional accompaniment. I'd like to see them release a studio version of this song with all its starkness left in, especially the metronome's introduction.
Why didn't I go to this show? I'm still kicking myself, but it's cool to see a clip on here. One of my fav songs of theirs, but I prefer the album version with the acoustic chorus.I love that part.
Oh, gotcha, I kinda misread the comment I guess. Flans generally always sings lead for that part when they play the song fast, though; he did it on the original Dial-A-Song demo and on 120 Minutes.
Metronome ftw!

I know the lyrics are terrifying, but Flansburgh's guitar is just so peppy!

I think real TMBG fans completely appreciate the creepiness of this song. And it is definitely one of my favorites.

@Papposilenos I love the term "real TMBG fans." For some reason that spoke to me.

Of course it's momento mori but a lot of TMBG's songs have that theme.
