It looks fluidic, I wonder if you could design a variable tension system and use compressed air or trapped fluid. Obviously, the system I'm thinking of would be the inverse of your robot - very cool bot nonetheless.
pretty cool for an undergrad project but i doubt it was for that and it just plain doesnt work and the initial animation is not really anything worth showing because what happens once it gets to the other side???? it doesnt do anything except fit through a stupid hole which may or may not fit the shrunken width of the robot. I can appreciate the programming involved in this though and i think this might suit better for underwater applications with a redesign but yeah a lot of redesign i guess
@craigberry007, I admire your skepticism about robot videos. It's usually what they don't show that is telling. But in this case, we weren't trying to demonstrate power autonomy - we were demonstrating the method of locomotion, and the development of smooth waves. The device has the potential to be very efficient, so I am pretty confident power will not be a problem.
@Speedcrusher, this robot is more like a worm, which uses a kind of motion called peristalsis. Maggots have a very similar wavelike motion, but they use sticky feet.
I actually had a vision or epiphany on robotic locomotion and evolution. our advancement are great today with bipedal, aqautic, and erial robotics but I envisoned the simplest form of robot similar to a nematode or fluke worm which is actually how I came across this video. I see great things coming from this very possible and achievable design with limitless applications ranging from exploration to rescues. i could see the jammable maluble "muscle" recently designed would be a great addition
@steffankaizer Yes, let them please turn this into some sort of anal spectoscope bot. Given how much people already enjoy having things shoved up their ass, I'm sure they're just gonna loooooove the sensation of something CRAWLING up it now too!
dat full speed

That just shows that it can't propel itself and the battery pack needed to power it. Fail.

@craigberry007 Peristaltic locomotion, not perpetual motion. Learn to read.

@craigberry007 It's obviously a prototype.

@craigberry007 This has nothing to do with perpetual motion...smh.

And with this technology, surely soon we will have a Dr. Robotnik theme park.

If they'd had this for that first Tremors movie. Wow. Loving the animatronics.

put some padding on there and make it tight and it could be a great full body sex toy.

Dude this is awesome. I particularly like that it's driven by only one motor.

this is amazing, but how could we use this practicly ?

@paradoXeI with a camera atached it could be used for anal spectoscopy. as a smaller version of course ^^
