POV in space....is that the best they got? What about interesting angles? I mean, now space show ever addressess that there is no up or down in the universe; have ships interact at odd angles, have extreme lighting shots when going around planets, have space debri bounce off the force feilds, show more scale shots to see the massiveness of the ship (wait they already do that), have silent explosions, have lasers that can't be followed with the human eye...the list goes on
Yeah, the only sci-fi space movie or series that actually took account of silence in space was 2001 A Space Odessey and Firefly. Also, I've noticed something unusual which got me thinking when I saw a Star Trek ENT episode called Rogue Planet". The fact that the NX Enterprise was shrouded in darkness when it took orbit over the rogue planet, but for all the sci-fi ships that are traveling in space when they're not in any solar system, they're well lit up by a distant sun.
@Coraxuss Okay, I would not know about photography in space, but I believe people do get the idea of silence from the popular line "in space, no one can hear you scream". If only we had catchy tag lines for the rest of basic interstellar facts
Shot documentary style - like the new Galactica. I like the concept. Your point of reference was too far away and it did look a bit like a toy. I would suggest using a point of reference much closer to give you a better sense of scale.
now your talking...I love thoughs sudden camerea jerks they do in Battlestar Galactica(remake) mybe they'll put that in the new trek film has well....bye bye old trek fans and hello new who will watch it allll over again! :D
gotta say i agree - it's the battlestar galactica / firefly effect, and it does not work for star trek. it works for battlestar galactica beautifully, because the whole of that series is very...rough edged. the characters are often deeply flawed, the ethics are ambiguous, the fleet is in tatters, so shaky camera work compliments it. similar for firefly. but in the clean trek universe? no no no no no no no no NO.
in BG the zoom and shaky camera affect give kinda the affect of actually 'being there'...its a bit of an added realism. But it takes part of the majestic flair of a starhip anyway from it in the process...
I agree. I initially thought the BSG handheld camera effect was irritating, until I realized it's supposed to lend an "on location/live documentary" feel. This was apparent in one space explosion scene where shrapnel actually hit the "camera" resulting in loss of video. (!)
Very Battlestar Galactica-ish

have you thought of merging it with a viper after it in BSG?

love the BSG style of filming a Star Ship in flight

Nice, battlestar style. Just as the drums in and your set.

Not bad at all. I wanna see ships going to Warp. That effect in the 79 movie "The Motion Picture' just plain sucked.

Borrowed the shakycam idea from BSG?
racybr 3 years ago 2
technically Firefly did it first but it was the same FX house soooooooooooo my point is moot.
silentbob8201 2 years ago
no worries. it's a nice effect.

It looks like a model, but it is far superior to what they did in tos!

Right, so. someone was in a space suit with a vid recorder, filming a ship moving at 1/4 of light speed...
Well, i suppose it could be could be coasting on thrusters.
(I know, I know!) I'm trying not to be a nit picker.
interesting shot though...

Yeah, the shaking camera thing gives upped its realism factor, and I REALLY hope the 09 film uses at least SOME of it.

he's right... it isn't a real spaceship. Seriously, get a life, you looked for spaceships and got this and actually felt the need to cry fake? -.-

Great job!
Do you have a version without all of the artifacting? (distortion)

The FIRST damn thing I thought! Shaky-cam plus EXTREME ZOOM. People have learned the WRONG DAMN LESSON from the success of Battlestar Galactica.

yeah, in the mini series 2004 some debris took out the space camera. In one nuke detonation near new caprica some debris destroyed the camera aswell.
I think the effect is quite cool. It's nice when they zoom in on the interesting parts, like some random explosions here and there.
