I'm trying to look up the origins of swear words, their anthropology in the English language. Edmund Leach was working on this but then he didn't develop it. Why do we use animals for swear words for e.g.? 'Bitch', 'pig', 'swine', 'donkey' etc, whereas 'cat' or 'pet' have positive connotations. Apparently, these have something to do with the fact the non-domesticated animals were outside, used for food or were wild etc. Thus, referring negatively on human who ought to stay outside of society.
